Budget supporting Middle England

On what planet is is right that a couple earning £100k plus are over £1,000 better off when a couple earning £25k between them are £150 better off after the budget.

And the latter probably voted Leave in order to shake up the establishment.

I agree Labour is not electable. Corbyn should resign and take the dreadful abbot with him.

Peregrina · 31/10/2018 08:31

The were comfortably ahead in the polls before the last election - otherwise May wouldn't have called it.

jasjas1973 · 01/11/2018 09:51

Well there is no alternative - despite everything the Conservatives are still ahead in the polls - it’s called the Corbyn/Abbot/ McDonald deterrent

That's because people believe the MSM, Labour are no-more communist/Marxist than my cat!
Anyone who took some time out to read their manifesto would soon realise Labours policies are centre left in a European context... the Conservatives have far more in common with AFD, FN, Freedom Party.

Just as Remainers denigrate Leavers for not looking at the facts, this is exactly what people are doing when they say Labour are not electable based on some headline in the 'Express or that the BBC don't report their policies correctly or the many successes JC and others have at QT.

The tories are taking the economy off a cliff, with contingency planning on par with war preparation... continuing with austerity and redistributing wealth from the poor to the richest! yet Labour are "apparently" un-electable... wake up! you are being had!

Bearbehind · 01/11/2018 11:28

jas I disagree - there is a very strong Corbyn / Abbott deterent.

People just don’t want to be represented by them. I know because I am one of them.

Make Starmer leader and I’d vote Labour but I won’t support Corbyn.

OP posts:
Peregrina · 01/11/2018 12:05

The tories are taking the economy off a cliff, with contingency planning on par with war preparation...

The Tories aren't even doing that. By 1938 it was realised that War was likely, so the Government started to plan for food rationing, working out what would be a nutritious diet, and realised that the state of hospitals was by no means up to scratch if there were going to be major casualties. This crowd have come out with sniping and slogans - haven't planned for the basics of food and medications which are the absolute vital things they need to plan for.

jasjas1973 · 01/11/2018 13:53

@Bear Yes i fully appreciate the anti Corbyn feeling amongst many would be Labour supporters.
BUT Corbyn is not the heart of Labour, he can't dictate policy, he wont be there forever and as its highly unlikely the LibDems or the Greens will get in at the next GE, Labour are the only alternative.

Vote Labour or you WILL get a far right Tory administration in 2022, if not before, so 17 years of these charlatans!
In the meantime, If the polls swing behind Lab, we'll get changes in Tory policy.

Remember, had people supported Labour in 2015, they'd be no Brexit.

Gaspodethetalkingdog · 01/11/2018 14:00

No Brexit under a Labour government - the cause of Brexit was immigration, which the labour regime under Blair/Brown was actively encouraged.!!

Tahani · 01/11/2018 14:08

The same planet where a couple who earn £49k each can continue to claim child benefit but another couple with one income at £51k can’t.

this - in spades, i'm close to the amount, my DP stays home to look after our DC (1 disabled) and we scrape by, with mortgage, 4 people who might not be adults, but are teens so eat loads, wear loads, we're not on the breadline, and i'm grateful for what i can earn and dont think i am hard done by, HOWEVER! child benefit should be based on family income, not an individuals

Bearbehind · 01/11/2018 14:24

jas Corbyns response to anything Brexit related has been pitiful.

It is his job to put up some kind of opposition yet, particularly in PMQ’s, he barely mentions it, preferring to stick with his agenda from 1975.

It’s Corbyns ultimate decision which way his party goes and right now he is doing them no favours.

I literally cannot see why anyone supports the man.

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 01/11/2018 14:28

Labour should be miles ahead in the polls given the disaster TM is making of Brexit.

It’s a mark of just how badly Corbyn is perceived that Labour have not been able to capitalise on that and are still lagging behind.

They should have got rid of him and, with the right leader, they would be miles ahead.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 01/11/2018 14:40

I agree that a decent Labour leader , or even an average one, would rip this shower to pieces.
Corbyn is probably hoping to rise victorious from the chaos. He doesn't give a shit about avoiding chaos. Their "six tests" bollocks are a joke. Of course they won't be met.
If only they would dump him and put Yvette Cooper in charge. I may disagree with her here and there but she'd hold the Tories to account.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 01/11/2018 19:36

Jas - I’ve been a Labour voter all my life and cannot support this leadership. If there is a snap GE I’m torn about voting for my labour MP who is actually representing my interests and beliefs, and voting for the LDs which would be insane as this is a Lab/Con marginal, but avoids endorsing Corbyn. He’s been utterly shit on Brexit.

I have just seen that Labour voted in favour of the tax cuts for the well off. WTAF. At least my MP didn’t. DH and I are both higher rate tax payers btw, but we have consciences.

woman11017 · 01/11/2018 19:58

Brexit is for men.

63% of gains from the income tax giveaway in budget will go to men

Women’s Budget Group says Treasury failed to produce a full gender equality analysis

I am a man and will be losing possibly several thousand pounds AND half of my customer base and making my work harder so it is not 'just for men'.

woman11017 · 01/11/2018 20:57

Brexit is for men.

jasjas1973 · 01/11/2018 20:58

If you don't vote Labour at the next election, then we will get a Tory Government and few more libdem MPs. wow!
Corbyn is almost 70, its inconceivable he'll be their leader for much longer.
As i said, look at the Labour manifesto, not labours figure head and yes i agree, JC/Labours opposition to brexit is pitiful because both parties are married to this "Respect the vote" crap, where as it should always be what is best for the UK.
but at least Labour have always said SM and CU.

Bearbehind · 01/11/2018 21:04

but at least Labour have always said SM and CU

But Corbyn doesn’t.

Manifestos aren’t worth the paper they are written on anymore.

Politics is about emotions and actions and Corbyn has made his true stance clear.

I genuinely dont understand why Labour supporters aren’t up in arms about this missed opportunity.

What is your defence of Corbyns actions?

OP posts:
jasjas1973 · 01/11/2018 21:20

@Bear i don't have any, i'm ashamed of Labour and their Brexit policy BUT fail to support Labour and we'll have another 5 years of the Tories, perhaps even another 10, as lose the next GE and Labour will implode.... is that what you really want?
Brexit appears to be happening and if so, i'd rather have Labour in power than the Tories.

Bearbehind · 01/11/2018 21:24

I actually think it would be better to make the Tories ride this out and be answerable for their actions.

It’s the ultimate poison chalice now - it is going to destroy whichever party has to preside over the first years of Brexit.

OP posts:
54321go · 01/11/2018 21:27

Over the age of 25, more women voted to Brexit than men.

Bearbehind · 01/11/2018 21:29

Over the age of 25, more women voted to Brexit than men.

That cannot be proven.

I got this from a statistics website.
{https://www.statista.com/statistics/567922/distribution-of-eu-referendum-votes-by-age-and-gender-uk/}

jasjas1973 · 01/11/2018 21:54

@Bear the Tories will change (even further) the face of Britain, they'll introduce stuff that will be irreversible, just like MT did.

IMHO i think a Labour Government will seek a much closer co-op with the EU post Brexit (where as the Tories will look to the USA) whatever May negotiates, it wont be forever and being more centralist, Labour will have a co-operative partner in the EU.

But yes, there is mileage in letting the Tories deal with this mess but at what cost?

Figmentofmyimagination · 02/11/2018 08:22

David Runciman in his latest Talking Politics podcast suggests that a bad brexit presents an ‘existential threat’ to the tories, ‘the most successful election winning machine in 200 years’.

We need a brand new party to emerge from somewhere.
