Budget supporting Middle England

On what planet is is right that a couple earning £100k plus are over £1,000 better off when a couple earning £25k between them are £150 better off after the budget.

And the latter probably voted Leave in order to shake up the establishment.

Welcome to 'Toryland'!

Bearbehind · 30/10/2018 19:41

But why the feck are people supporting it?

OP posts:
Peregrina · 30/10/2018 19:47

Who exactly is supporting it? Just the right wing Press?

Bearbehind · 30/10/2018 20:41

Supporting is probably the wrong word.

Why isn't there outrage from those who have been duped into supporting the Tories because of Brexit.

The same planet where a couple who earn £49k each can continue to claim child benefit but another couple with one income at £51k can’t.

Bearbehind · 30/10/2018 21:28

So why do people support the Tories over Brexit?

Its literally shooting yourself in the foot then blasting your knee for a laugh.

So why do people support the Tories over Brexit?

Maybe because there is no credible/effective opposition? Or a case of better the devil you know?

Bearbehind · 30/10/2018 21:49

That's true time but I still don't understand why there isn't an uproar about this.

OP posts:

Because so few have really considered ALL the bad things that Brexit will bring, or more accurately, take away.
Travel. Meds, big international companies closing down, widespread unemployment, big hikes in food cost, and a whole raft of other bits and pieces all kicking off at the same time.
A budget 'boost' of a hundred quid or so is not helping the 400-900 quid a year loss that Brexit is bringing.

Peregrina · 30/10/2018 22:02

Having read a summary of the budget in the paper, I don't even think it's supporting Middle England, whoever that might be. Once more, it's supporting the already wealthy. Why does anyone expect anything else from the Tories?

Bearbehind · 30/10/2018 22:03

That's my point though. Those more able to ride the storm have been given a bigger cushion to do it yet still no one is up in arms about it.

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 30/10/2018 22:04

True, it's upper middle England.

Too many are happy to look at kittens on social media rather than putting 1 and 1 together and work out that the government is in the process of trashing the UK.

time4chocolate · 30/10/2018 22:31

I do wonder if a lot of people generally have reached saturation point with politics (and Brexit).

bellinisurge · 31/10/2018 06:04

There is no credible opposition. The budget is pretty meaningless because we are going to need an emergency budget soon after Brexit. It was just an exercise in pretending everything is fine in Tory land and lobbying some cash at the DUP.

bellinisurge · 31/10/2018 06:13

"Lobbing" even.

BeardedMum · 31/10/2018 06:20

Its mostly the low earners voting for them and Brexit too. We are high earners and will ride the storm. To be honest I just think suit yourselves guys.....

ShackUp · 31/10/2018 06:44

Is it an 'election' budget? Are they trying to appeal to their core vote before calling a general election?

bellinisurge · 31/10/2018 06:49

They are trying to lull people into a "nothing to see here/all lovely and Tory" before the shit hits the fan.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 31/10/2018 07:03

The same planet where a couple who earn £49k each can continue to claim child benefit but another couple with one income at £51k can’t.

Then both members of the 51K couple should work if they are able to, I dont even get 9K a year on benefits and cant seem to find a shit to give for someone on 51K not getting their £20 a week, diddums Hmm

Peregrina · 31/10/2018 07:26

It's nice to blame low income voters for the Brexit vote, and there were certainly plenty, but there were an awful lot of comfortable south east England Tories too, who were quite happy with it. Who will have made some money from this budget. Still the Chancellor has to try to keep them sweet - the proposed dementia tax of the last election didn't win them any votes.

How good it would be if some politicians tried to think of the good of the whole country. Particularly those who make a show of their Christianity, but seem to espouse some very unchristian values.

I don't think we've had any votes on it yet, so give it time. I think the DUP probably got another bung to keep them quiet.

Well there is no alternative - despite everything the Conservatives are still ahead in the polls - it’s called the Corbyn/Abbot/ McDonald deterrent.
