Westministenders: Deadline Day #1

We have hit another Deadline Day.

As it stands, the EU are looking for more progress. May is digging in her heels by suggesting there is new a requirement for backstop to a backstop. The backstop to all intents and purposes is the GFA. So May is saying in effect, that the EU are forcing her to put in provisions to protect an international agreement we are signed up to, and if we breech it we risk peace in NI.

After lots of noise it seems that the Cabinet have decided to stick by May. For now.

The EU look like they are talking as if their meeting next month will exclude the UK and just go straight to No Deal planning.

There is also other talk of alternatives to allow the UK to stay in the customs union. But theres not much to that and it still doesn't solve the ERG and the DUP problem.

May is vastly unestimating how much the ERG and the DUP want to break the GFA. Which is a huge misjudgment.

There is also talk of the final final Deadline Day actually being Dec 13. For various reasons its not. Thats 29th March.

So Wednesday is Deadline Day #1. Expect more.

Me too, Hasenstein and Hazardswan silence from David Gauke my local tory MP, (do me a favour and complete the description Mrs8) despite asking specifically about meds.

I am in touch with another local anti brexit lady. She has a nasty cancer.
She will be killed by exit from Euratom and the NHS on 29.3.19. She jokes about it, and I am in awe of her courage, but it is not funny.

Banamara · 18/10/2018 21:53

Seems to me that the ROI understands the shitstorm this is. They are dead right to stick to their guns. They are showing up the UK Government for the shambles it is.

Quite embarrassing really for the UK. I doubt many across the EU (most don't care to be fair), have much time for them. The ineptitude shines brightly.

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 21:55

GD12. That doesn't surprise me. 'May's Choice' has been the writing on the wall for some time.

@RedToothBrush

Yep. I know it's a no deal just terrifying to see it put like that.

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 22:00

Get used to it.

Alex Wickham @ alexwickham
Extended transition, EUCO cluster, Mercer truth bullets and now suggestion of a permanent customs union... get the feeling Tory MPs are close to a big moment

Split? Or just May's head?

Talking to someone at work today. Known her for decades. It seemed suddenly natural to check if each other had access to a passport to get out of this island.
Fuckety fuck.

In response to Peston comments above, heres the ERG response

Steve Baker Mp @stevebakerhw
I’m sure a few of us predicted Chequers would be pushed to the Customs Union plus some kind of single market membership, effectively reversing the result

Look on the bright side.

This is starting to look like the moment of revelation.

Overheard on the school run. Bear in mind I live in brexitopia. A conversation on house prices and the fact they're predicted to drop massively. About time one pipes up they bloody need to. Yeah great if you're buying, but what if you're selling? asks the other. Shrugs from the first. People aint gonna sell unless they have to coz everything's gone to shit, and if everything's gone to shit what's the likelihood of being able to buy a house?. The look as the penny dropped on the first was amazing to watch.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 18/10/2018 22:28

Not that house prices round this way haven't risen pretty ridiculously btw. More of a commentary on how people were thinking of something that benefitted them without thinking of the wider issues.

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 22:33

Jess Phillips @jessphillips
I think that Theresa May has finally realised that they all want rid of her and she might as well go shit or bust.

Yep, thats about the sum total of it.

Thomasinaa · 18/10/2018 22:35

But Labour wouldn't vote for a CU. Have said they will only vote for the same benefits.

Buteo · 18/10/2018 22:38

A bit off topic, I went on a farm tour today. Farmer was moaning about an EU directive about when he can spread slurry on his land - “it’s the wrong times for the UK, can’t be varied, must be because it suits countries in the EU. It will be better after Brexit.”

Guess what. The EU directive requires member states to set their own dates. Fuck all to do with Europe. It’s the UK government that had decided on dates that don’t suit UK farming conditions Hmm

Talkstotrees · 18/10/2018 22:59

I hope you’ve contacted the farmer and explained where the fault really lies.

GD12 · 18/10/2018 23:00

@Thomasinaa
Its a no deal if they don't then. That's what Mays probably trying to do, run the clock down and scare MPs into voting for a shit deal.

HesterThrale · 18/10/2018 23:01

Final Say petition is gaining impetus again. Must be because of all the publicity around the march.
Nearly 910,000 names.

GD12 · 18/10/2018 23:02

I really, really, really, really, really hate the ERG. Almost as much as I despise and hate Brexit.

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 23:05

Talk tonight that Mueller is winding down before Christmas.

New to this thread, all so informative thanks to everyone!! No word from Arlene yet on the temporary until something better backstop announcement ?

Hazardswan · 18/10/2018 23:39

I'm considering taking a photo of DPs meds and emailing them to local MP and all the parties to ask if he will get all these meds (2+ shopping bags full) post March. See if visual evidence helps.

Hasenstein thank you for keeping me updated. Did you see the letter that was posted (i think by DG ) a few threads back? Labour MP response was she had serious concerns and i think she said she wrote to the health sec. Nothing reassuring.

Not that anything to do with brexit is reassuring!
