Westministenders: Talks Walk Out?

We are now on the countdown to whether we get a backstop Withdrawal Deal. May is hoping to get the EU to backdown on this saying that we will stay in the customs union until a deal is agreed on NI. That would mean come 29th March, we'd have no transistion period, but we'd still have a hard border in NI because we were out of the single market. And if the EU don't agree to it we are into the chances of accidental Brexit being sky high. The only way out would be revoking a50. May has hinted that if Tory MPs don't give her support we could end up with no brexit at all - whether she means revoking a50 or Beano isn't clear.

So onward to 18th October...

I lost my right to NHS on the date I purchased a house in the EU and somehow declared I would be a resident in the EU. Seems a bit shit as nobody bothered to tell me this fact.

mathanxiety · 04/10/2018 22:52

Red Flowers about the house and Brew for the cold.

If I were you I would up sticks, rent out your house to keep a base in the UK, and leave for Europe while you still can.

You are bound to find a good school for DS elsewhere. There have to be people looking for a foothold in the catchment who would rent your house.

mathanxiety · 04/10/2018 23:07

Wrt NI and the New Lodge area (a RC/nationalist area) unrest and hooliganism, and Arlene Foster's red lines/blood comment - none of this is coincidental, just as none of the Eleventh Night (in July) mockery of the PSNI and emergency services by Loyalist paramilitaries was coincidental. Foster is trying to incite sectarian hatred, and thumb her nose at the institutions of civil society. I get a sense that the DUP relishes the prospect of a return of violence to NI.

The DUP are basically fascists. They have no commitment whatsoever to the rule of law or to the democratic process despite the po-faced bowler hat look of their followers in the Orange Order.

Isabel Oakeshott is on Question Time again. FFS why?

Some days you just see a news story that sets off your imagination.

This is one:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-45753455?ocid=socialflow_twitter&ns_mchannel=social&ns_campaign=bbcnews&ns_source=twitter
Girl, 8, pulls a 1,500-year-old sword from a lake in Sweden

Why is it sending me off into the land of la la?

Excalibur, or Caliburn, is the legendary sword of King Arthur, sometimes also attributed with magical powers or associated with the rightful sovereignty of Britain.

In Arthurian romance, a number of explanations are given for Arthur's possession of Excalibur. In Robert de Boron's Merlin, the first tale to mention the "sword in the stone" motif, Arthur obtained the British throne by pulling a sword from an anvil sitting atop a stone that appeared in a churchyard on Christmas Eve. In this account, the act could not be performed except by "the true king," meaning the divinely appointed king or true heir of Uther Pendragon.

and

Arthur is at the brink of death and so orders Griflet to throw the sword into the enchanted lake; after two failed attempts (as he felt such a great sword should not be thrown away), Griflet finally complies with the wounded king's request and a hand emerges from the lake to catch it.

I blame the flu.

Leclerc one loses the right to NHS treatment after either 3 or 6 months away - I'm not sure which.

afaik, the NHS is aware of this absence only after one registers as a resident in an EU country, because this data is swapped.
So, nothing to do with buying or renting, just official country of residence

I also gather that expats in receipt of UK state pension can still receive treatment on visits to the UK, but noone else.
That would fit with the automatic refunding of healthcare for these pensioners to their country of residence, which is an EU regulation

  • all of which the UK govt may decide not to continue after Brexit.

Math When I posted about the New Lodge riots, following Foster's reckless "blood-red" remark and the DUP wanting to abolish the 50:50 PSNI recruitment,
I hoped that you and other Irish origin posters would comment.

I wasn't sure if I was becoming paranoid, but the DUP seem to be reverting openly to the old Unionist triumphalism and keeping down the Catholics

One of the few good things about a Corbyn govt is that I don't think he would send in troops to back her in reimposing Unionist dominance and flying the Union flag etc
whereas May is quite likely to.

Mistigri · 05/10/2018 01:00

The NHS is just for residents (and emergencies) so I'm surprised your kids can use the NHS now

They have EHIC cards which cover emergency NHS treatment.

They won't lose rights in the EU - unless their parents lose the right to live/work there (in which case they stand to lose quite a lot).

Bigchoc

Yes you are correct I think - corbyn would do plenty of hand wringing but little else to stop violence in Northern Ireland

You talk like that is a good thing

woman11017 · 05/10/2018 07:11

Beautiful lookin country MrsR. Have you been to the Giants Causeway? I've always wanted to go.

Peregrina · 05/10/2018 07:28

10degrees - your last post and comment about Corbyn implies that you think sending in the troops would stop violence in N Ireland. Have I misinterpreted you?

I am not alone in believing that this would immediately inflame the situation.

Peregrina · 05/10/2018 07:33

And I should add, I am very very angry about the situation. Major, Blair and a good few others worked hard for the Good Friday Agreement. Now if Blair hadn't been such an enthusiastic chump as to follow the Americans into war in Iraq, I think his reputation for securing peace in NI would have ensured his place in history. Instead it's the opposite, as a war-monger.

Unilever scraps plan to relocate to Rotterdam after coming under ‘considerable pressure’

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 05/10/2018 07:44

Re the Unilever news, Twitter is alive with ‘Project Fear debunked’ gloating. 🙄

woman11017 · 05/10/2018 07:45

Stunning Mrs8 hope I can go soon too!
Just need to keep that beautiful Good Friday Agreement, and our membership of CU and SM going, I have a feeling we will. Smile
All women know the value of peace.

1tisILeClerc · 05/10/2018 07:47

Thanks BCF, it is the fact they knew my new address and couldn't be bothered to tell me.
Any 'new' military appearing on NI soil will cause a massive problem.
I commented a while ago that if /when there is an electricity shortage in NI due to Brexit, having military generators off shore will necessarily require at least security for the connections even if the generators themselves are entirely serviced by ship. Of course the military are entitles to be on land for days off etc but would become targets.

Peregrina · 05/10/2018 07:53

I have a feeling we will.

I sincerely hope so. I don't trust May not to blunder into crashing out.
