Westministenders: Talks Walk Out?

We are now on the countdown to whether we get a backstop Withdrawal Deal. May is hoping to get the EU to backdown on this saying that we will stay in the customs union until a deal is agreed on NI. That would mean come 29th March, we'd have no transistion period, but we'd still have a hard border in NI because we were out of the single market. And if the EU don't agree to it we are into the chances of accidental Brexit being sky high. The only way out would be revoking a50. May has hinted that if Tory MPs don't give her support we could end up with no brexit at all - whether she means revoking a50 or Beano isn't clear.

So onward to 18th October...

Apparently the evidence that "they need us more than we need them" is that there are many lorries in Kent bringing goods to sell Hmm - possibly this poster needs help with arithmetic if they think that 27 =1 Grin

Falcon Thanks Well done for changing your opinion when the facts changed, or when you realised you'd been given fake facts.

Most people - once they've decided on any important issue - are too inflexible, too proud, to change,
so they just double down and ignore any evidence to the contrary.

Yay for falcon!

As for that sign at Gatwick - it doesn't surprise me.

What does constantly amaze me is how shit Heathrow and Gatwick are, every time I land there.

I've travelled quite widely and they are disgraceful in comparison to other countries; frequently having broken escalators, being filthy and disorganised.

The toilets when you land at at Gatwick are usually disgusting.

1tisILeClerc · 05/10/2018 22:11

Truly disgraceful

Lonelycrab · 05/10/2018 22:15

That sign😞

woman11017 · 05/10/2018 22:20

Which countries, though have you landed in with signs like that bearbehind ? In the EU? To be expected in China and the US, but this is straight of the authoritarian handbook.

I still don't understand the english obsession with toilets, I'm sure Freud or Marx could explain it.

Bearbehind · 05/10/2018 22:25

woman I’m not defending that sign at all- it’s disgraceful.

I’m just pointing out our arrogance is entirely misplaced because landing at LGW or LHR is like landing in a 3rd world country in many respects.

UnnecessaryFennel · 05/10/2018 22:30

That sign.

What have we become?

woman11017 · 05/10/2018 22:30

No, I get that bearbehind . All english infrastructure is shite absolutely everywhere, but that sign is gruesome, I agree.

Bearbehind · 05/10/2018 22:37

In lieu of any actual benefits - It does amuse me that things as simple as being able to join the ‘EU citizens’ queue in European airports will be a thing of the past.

Many Leavers will be apoplectic at having to queue with the non-white people.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 05/10/2018 22:40

That sign though tells you a lot. Carry out checks one who's entering. Checks. No recording. Nothing to prevent anyone overstaying. Nothing to prevent you deporting (probably wrong term) people who have exercised FOM rights but haven't met the found a job/self sustaining with health insurance/etc. requirements.

woman11017 · 05/10/2018 22:46

Good point OhLookHeKickedtheBall cheap bullying.

At Luton last week there was no passport control as we came in. Just one man checking our passport pictures casually as we actually got off the plane.

No staff I bet.

1tisILeClerc · 05/10/2018 22:56

woman
I am not sure but in some ways passport control may be unnecessary in some circumstances as all passengers can be cross checked by the passenger lists.

Peregrina · 05/10/2018 23:02

I’m not defending that sign at all- it’s disgraceful.

But Theresa said the country was open for business!

woman11017 · 05/10/2018 23:13

It certainly speeding things up Leclerc Smile

To be expected in China and the US

Have to step in to defend Chinese airports here - more wonderful models of friendliness and efficiency in an air travel setting I have never come across (with a shout out to the equally wonderful Cambodians!)

in 2015 my flight to Vietnam was delayed by about 12 hours (LHR - obvs) - by the time we landed in Xiangyang, the officials there had worked out everybody's new connecting flights for them. Mine was about twenty minutes after we landed - and they just hustled me through the queue, very cursory passport check - and then onto the plane.

Coming back - we missed our plane back to China (much confusion - all my sister's fault, including the part where she checked the tickets and claimed the flight was at quarter past 8. when I looked them over I asked, with mounting concern, to point out where the time was. She pointed to what she assumed was the digital time in 24 hour clock. It wasn't quarter past 8 - it was 2015 - the year, not the time!) The Cambodians let us on the next flight for free (because they are a wonderful people) and when we finally arrived in China the officials apologised to US for the delay.
Then one lady chased us miles through the airport to return our luggage tags to us (which proved very useful - as there was a strike on at Charles De Gaulle (isn't there always?) and our suitcases didn't make it onto the connecting flight back to London.)

Of all airports in all countries I've ever flown through - China's was definitely the most impressive experience. I couldn't have had more dramas on the way into China - but they could handle it all and were very pleasant and non-threatening. Meanwhile, every European airport I have ever visited has managed to turn the most routine flight into a complete farce. And U.S airports are terrifying places.

We were already much worse at airports than China - that sign just turns us into total bastards as well as incompetents. But ... they can take it down when the planes stop flying.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/oct/05/may-secretly-woos-key-labour-mps-to-back-her-brexit-deal

Theresa May has drawn up plans for a secret charm offensive aimed at persuading dozens of Labour MPs to back her Brexit deal even if it costs Jeremy Corbyn the chance to be prime minister, the Guardian has learned.

Senior Conservatives say they have already been in private contact with a number of Labour MPs over a period of several months, making the case that the national interest in avoiding a no-deal outcome is more important than forcing a general election by defeating the government on May’s Brexit deal.

Now, with talks in Brussels entering their frantic final phase, the prime minister and her party whips are stepping up efforts to win backing for a compromise deal that one minister described as a “British blancmange”.

They are convinced they will need Labour votes to win, after a fractious Tory conference in Birmingham, at which determined opponents of the prime minister’s approach, including Jacob Rees-Mogg, won plaudits for saying they would vote against it.

Mistigri · 06/10/2018 07:10

Word on the street seems to be that in order to avoid the March cliff edge, the govt will fold on all points of contention in order to get a withdrawal agreement with a largely "blind" but probably Canada type post-transition deal.

(But @guitarmoog and others in the loop also talking about this)

Tories courting Labour to get support. Tough one for Labour. It's a terrible deal but the alternative is flights don't take off and médecines don't arrive and it would be Labour's fault. They've painted themselves into this corner and I have no sympathy.

Yes the issue with Labour’s position of waiting to see what happens is that now they have no other choice that back up whatever TM comes up with. (Whether it’s a beano , Canada style or whatever, anything that isn’t a No Deal will be seen as positive now.)
Or they will loook like the bad guy

I have been surprised at the EU comment that a Canada +++ been in the table since the start.

I’m starting to wonder more and more if TM actually knew what she wanted to do and pushed to get more (esp on immigration) whilst knowing full well she had something to fall back on.
That certainly would have given her a safety net whilst she was busy dealing with internal, issues to the Conservative Party.

Labour never actually taking position made a mistake imo. They’ve put all their eggs into the ‘conservative are going to mess it up’ basket and if the Tories managed to get an agreement that means planes will fly, médecines are delivered whilst claiming very strongly that immigration is now finally controlled, then the Tories might well come out as winners there.

EU will sew up the backstop in a straight jacket the tories can't remove.

Tories are folding and I think labour have been outmanoeuvred.
