Westministenders: Talks Walk Out?

We are now on the countdown to whether we get a backstop Withdrawal Deal. May is hoping to get the EU to backdown on this saying that we will stay in the customs union until a deal is agreed on NI. That would mean come 29th March, we'd have no transistion period, but we'd still have a hard border in NI because we were out of the single market. And if the EU don't agree to it we are into the chances of accidental Brexit being sky high. The only way out would be revoking a50. May has hinted that if Tory MPs don't give her support we could end up with no brexit at all - whether she means revoking a50 or Beano isn't clear.

So onward to 18th October...

Y2K a bad comparison...

Hmm...

Let’s see...

tales of ‘end of days’ hysteria - check.... hysterical media - check... threads full of weirdo ‘prepper’ types hoping their bunkers will come in handy (at last!) - check... smug, arrogant remainers - ah that’s new

Yes you’re right they ARE totally different!!!

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2018 18:38

__ Nearly there ??!! < don't breathe >
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union’s Brexit negotiators believe a divorce deal with Britain is “very close”, diplomatic sources said,

Looks like the whole UK would remain in the customs union (so no customs border required or NI) - won't please the ERG, especially if it would stop the UK creating new trade deals

Zero tariffs, which would please both UK and E27 business
Not quite frictionless trade, but "as frictionless as possible" - Hmm we'dnhave to see how that works

NI meets EU regulations, so there would have to be regulatory checks in the Irish sea - which the DUP will hate

However, together with the "evolution clause" of allowing the future trade deal to change if the UK's red lines do,
it should get through Parliament
Barnier wouldn't propose something outside his remit, so the E27 would agree.

All depends on whether May has a bit of backbone & courage left, to face down the Ultras Hmm

“Negotiations are not easy because we also have to be critical that we receive different signals from London,” European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker said in Austria.

“There is a polyphonic chorus at the level of the British cabinet and we try to arrange the pieces ... so that they become a melody,” GrinGrin

There are still Leavers on the 'in or out' thread who believe that 'they need us more than we need them'.

Of all the slogans, it's that one that flabbers my gast more than any other, I think. How can anyone in possession of the ability to count past three actually believe that?

woman11017 · 05/10/2018 18:45

Bingo.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2018 18:46

Weirdo prepper types ?
That would be the UK govt with their 70 odd prepping notices to business (which we aren't supposed to read)

and that would also be the large businesses panicking about millions per day in extra costs - the businesses who supply a significant amount of the money, goods & services that keeps the country going

and that would be Leaver Richard North who has been advising stocking up with 3 MONTH's food & essentials - like his family already have done

  • Have you bothered to read his Leaver blog ?

Anyway, hopefully May's red lines have blurred enough for this proposed deal, so we won't have to worry about prepping,
but it's far from nailed down atm.

Oh the 10s of thousand I made doing fuck all in the run up to the millennium bug. In my dreams at least. Sadly the reality was basic pay and weeks of hard work of which I was only a tiny tiny but necessary part.

Currently making a nice chicken and veg pie. Anyone got some baking going on?

DoctorTwo · 05/10/2018 18:51

@1TisILeClerc it was Ian Dury, not Tom Robinson, who was responsible for Reasons To Be Cheerful (Part 3)

The proper reply is of course Reasons To Be Miserable (Part 10) by Half Man Half Biscuit

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 05/10/2018 18:52

woman sounds like the a defect in the program there with that tweet. So many questions. Is Jason the son or does he think James is called Jason. Also why does a 7yo have viber? Many many more questions.

Talkstotrees · 05/10/2018 18:57

My DH made a few 100 thou fixing millennium bug issues. Necessary and important work, for which he was well paid.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2018 19:00

Y2K, where the world spend $300 billion^^
and tens of thousands of IT geeks worked for years, to avoid disaster

All for these bloody fools to say there was no problem ...

It*s like saying don't bother about e.g. appendicitis
.... but it would be fatal if you weren't taken to have your appendix out, by a trained surgeon and a theatre team.

Don't bother about house fires
... there would be a lot more fire fatalities without the fire service

All these "smug mc experts" working to avoid disasters, only for some idiots to say their work was all unnecessary

It seems that we have a public that has been spoonfed and kept unaware of those who actually keep things running,
so they think everything will work forever by some act of God on behalf of Britain.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2018 19:06

It seems that people refuse to believe that some subjects are incredibly complex
and insist instead on a simple, but WRONG answer

  • that is at their limited level of comprehension and fits to their political / religious beliefs:

1tisILeClerc · 05/10/2018 19:07

Thank you DoctorTwo. It didn't feel quite right. I was remembering 2,4,6,8 motorway as Tom, but not coming up with the right answer!

Talking of Millenium bugs, a whole load of computers assembled in China may/may not have hardware 'snooping' chips inside, depending on whether you believe the Chinese government or the American government plus Apple etc.

woman11017 · 05/10/2018 19:09

like the a defect in the program
Crux of the whole malarkey. Grin

Don't bother about house fires
Too recent a case which proves the fatal dangers of obiterating H&S in building regs. Sad

Peregrina · 05/10/2018 19:17

Did you work on Y2K 10degrees?

Somerville · 05/10/2018 19:17

Man in the High Castle Series 3 Shock

I learn all the best things from this thread.

I'm home alone with a stinking cold. I have my favourite white Burgundy medicine and Walking Dead fanfiction prepping research but I needed something to watch.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2018 19:21

Imo, chance of a deal - with transition period, aviation etc - has increased now to about 60% Smile

(I'm not saying it will be a good deal, just that it would stop a cliff edge crash after 29 March)

10degreestostarboard · 05/10/2018 19:22

Peregrina

No - did you?

TheElementsSong · 05/10/2018 19:25

Is it wrong that I'm reading the travel thread like this GrinGrinGrin?

woman11017 · 05/10/2018 19:31

has increased now to about 60% smile
Smile too.

woman11017 · 05/10/2018 19:32

Hasenstein · 05/10/2018 19:49

It didn't feel quite right. I was remembering 2,4,6,8 motorway as Tom, but not coming up with the right answer!

Maybe Tom Robinson could adapt another of his best-known songs:

"Sing if you're glad to remain,
Sing if you're happy that way" Grin

Peregrina · 05/10/2018 19:51

No - did you?

How did I guess?

Yes, I most certainly did. Same as OhLookHeKicked - didn't get paid the silly money the COBOL developers brought out of retirement did.

Was it overhyped? We couldn't say it was without examining thousands of lines of code. But we also took the opportunity to upgrade and rationalise systems. Prior to that we had loads of in-house written code, with bits and pieces spatchcocked together, which was a right mish-mash. In the end I would say it took six years of work before we were fully satisfied with our Finance system, which is what I had been working on. Admittedly, the last couple of years was down to a group of three people tidying up bits here and there.

So I call hogwash again to those who prattle that it's like the Millenium bug.

For the German speakers amongst us , I once spent a very drunken and confused 5 minutes looking for a Igel in the sky whilst my German friend was pointing to a hedge Grin
