Westministenders: Talks Walk Out?

We are now on the countdown to whether we get a backstop Withdrawal Deal. May is hoping to get the EU to backdown on this saying that we will stay in the customs union until a deal is agreed on NI. That would mean come 29th March, we'd have no transistion period, but we'd still have a hard border in NI because we were out of the single market. And if the EU don't agree to it we are into the chances of accidental Brexit being sky high. The only way out would be revoking a50. May has hinted that if Tory MPs don't give her support we could end up with no brexit at all - whether she means revoking a50 or Beano isn't clear.

So onward to 18th October...

What on earth is that Tweet about? Although it almost makes more sense than some Leavers' posts on MN Grin

DGRossetti · 05/10/2018 16:55

Mmm Brexit venison.

Well I like venison Smile

DGRossetti · 05/10/2018 16:57

I've always been a big fan of BBC historical documentaries, and I get a real feeling with many of the recent ones that the presenters were often subtly (or sometimes even pointedly smile) saying very Remain-y things. For example there was one with the apparently unpromising title of "Invasion" which made me think that.

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09hr5bh (not available. But worth keeping an eye out for, they do get repeated).

TheElementsSong · 05/10/2018 17:00

Well found, DG!

Sam Willis also did a historical weapons series, and the excellent series about the Silk Road.

(Also, I think he's pretty easy on the eyes. Sorry for lowering the tone.)

Fun aren't they. elements That one provided a jolly thread. Smile

SW does have a youthful exuberance about him ... exactly what is needed to enthuse people over a subject.

It's a shame BoJo decided politics was his metier (another thing he got wrong). If he had stuck to making documentaries, he'd be far more respected in my opinion.

Also, despite his burka ballsup, I recall him as advocating non-muslims to ask their muslilm neighbours about Ramadan, and to experience the celebrations of Eid. Which isn't something I've heard many tories - even muslim ones - saying.

"Dreams of Rome" was one (interesting take on the EU/Roman Empire comparison) and there was another about the rise of Islam

Meanwhile, the AIBU travel thread is the gift that keeps on giving Grin.

Funny how "squirrel" is regarded as one of the most difficult English words for non-native speakers to pronounce, while "Eichhörnchen" tends to break the tongues of non-mother tongue German speakers. I always get in a mess with "Räucherstäbchen".

Funny how "squirrel" is regarded as one of the most difficult English words for non-native speakers to pronounce

Recently I heard someone say that it was one of the funniest words in English ... it looks funny, and has a weird population of letters l,s,q,r,u - all from the middle of the alphabet ... (while typing this I remember it was Daniel Sloss to a US audience, who found it funny ...)

EU may offer post-Brexit trade flexibility to help May secure deal

Something for almost everyone:
the EU hopes a future UK govt will move to Norway+ rather than Canada+

The DUP will be very angry - the deal would have to include a NI backstop, however flowery the words - but it is likely many Labour MP would vote for this kind of deal
So, a majority if May plucks up her courage .. and sense of duty

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/oct/05/eu-may-offer-post-brexit-trade-flexibility-to-help-may-secure-deal

The EU is preparing to help Theresa May build a parliamentary majority for a Brexit deal by offering Downing Street a written commitment to think again about “frictionless trade” if the UK changes its red lines after it leaves the union.

EU leaders want to throw the prime minister a lifeline in their long-awaited political declaration on a future deal, a first draft of which is expected next week.

The four to five page declaration is expected to include an “evolution clause” in which the EU will say it remains open to improving its offer should a British government change tack during the 21-month transition period.

EU officials hope that, despite the opposition of a large number of Tory and Labour MPs to a Canada-style agreement which would create barriers to trade,
May will be able to garner enough support in parliament for a deal if it is clear that the declaration is not the last word on the future relationship.

I love hearing my Japanese DiL saying it Grin. r and l in such close proximity is a killer!

1tisILeClerc · 05/10/2018 17:57

I realise it wouldn't 'fly' as an idea but if the BBC and other news outlets published/reported on just ONE line from each of the government technical notices it would put the wind up a fair number of people.
Of course it won't happen because it has no sequins or cake involved (strictly baking).

Millionaire refuses to take down 'Bollocks to Brexit' poster Grin

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/oct/05/millionaire-refuses-take-down-bollocks-brexit-poster

An outspoken former Conservative party donor < so, not a "lefty" before any lurkers get excited >
has said he is prepared to go to prison to keep a giant “Bollocks to Brexit” poster above his London office after he was told to remove it by his local council.

EU may offer post-Brexit trade flexibility to help May secure deal

I suspect it's a trap, Jim.

Let's see if it works.

woman11017 · 05/10/2018 18:02

@J_amesp
In today’s hilarious Brexit news, the EU indicates she can have the deal she describes as “a bad deal”, in the future, as long as she backs down from her own stated policy, AND puts the DUP back in Pandora’s box, collapsing her government. #MaximumEffort

TheElementsSong · 05/10/2018 18:03

Just musing - does every poster who brings up the Millennium Bug thing, do so in a smug glow at how jolly brilliant they are to have thought up this novel, devastating argument Grin? Seeing as they have clearly not only not read any of the debunkings by Remainers (after all, they can't possibly be expected to read traitorous words lest they get contaminated), but also none of the previous posts by fellow TruPatriots Leavers.

DGRossetti · 05/10/2018 18:06

Apropos of noting Hmm the 3rd season of "The Man In The High Castle" is now available (Amazon Prime). Rufus Sewell and/or Nazi fans - the wait is over Grin.

We tried binging, but it's not for us oldies, so we'll have to wait till we've finished S2 of "Ozark".

DGRossetti · 05/10/2018 18:08

Just to clarify, I think the EU are calling TMs bluff to see if she really wants a deal or not. I am guessing she will find a reason to reject this overture too. Maybe it's not on the right colour paper ?

Peregrina · 05/10/2018 18:10

Did no Leaver work on Y2K projects aka the Millenium bug? If so, they must know that the comparison is a load of hogwash.

They mostly seem to know someone, who knew someone else, who did something or other around the time of Millenium and earned £ tens of thousands for unnecessary work
