After disaster after Salzberg and a very predictable humilation over the Chequers Deal which the ERG reject, moderate Brexiteers reject, Remainers reject and the EU reject....

May does a press conference...

...which is delayed by a power shortage inside No. 10.

And....

So Kier Starmer is doing best within the party ( if over half of your voters not knowing who the hell you are is good).

By contrast Shsmi Chakrabati is better known outside the party than within it.

lonelyplanetmum · 26/09/2018 07:03

Sorry that's the wrong way around BlushShami Chakrabati is the only one who is better known within Labour...

All the others including McDonnell !! are better known across the electorate than within Labour itself .

lonelyplanetmum · 26/09/2018 07:12

Sorry I was right the first time !

Shami is the only one who is just marginally better known within the Labour Party than outside it, all the others are better known by the electorate than within the Party.

(And I think DD is the one who is dyscalculic! I give up and am going back to bed.)

Plonkysaurus · 26/09/2018 07:16

Jesus.

I guess you can lead voters to water but you can't make them think.

frumpety · 26/09/2018 07:28

Have to admit to having to google Barry Blush

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/theresa-may-brexit-business-corporation-tax-bloomberg-forum-new-york-un-a8555146.html

Britain will be “unequivocally pro-business” after it leaves the European Union, Theresa May will promise investors.
Prime minister touts plan for one of lowest corporation tax rates among leading industrialised nations

As a summary, TM vision for Brexit is NOT and agreement with the EU which would have include no border in NI, some FOM and still following EU rules.
Nope it’s tax heaven, very tight immigration control (I suspect that’s her wet dream) and I suspect low regulation too.

Hard Brexit here we come. I hope JAMs have tighten their seats belts because it’s going to be very rough ride.

MyBrexitGoesOnHoliday · 26/09/2018 07:32

I spoke to someone yesterday who is planning a trip to Dublin. Saying he was worried about it but had told himself to stop been silly as he wasn’t going abroad but was still staying in the uk Shock

Makes sense. So what was Chequers for? As an inadequate sop to distract remainers? It was produced in the ( fairly obvious) knowledge that it's an unacceptable breach of the fundamental tenets of the EU and would be rejected? So just a way of edging towards no deal surreptitiously?

"Saying he was worried about it but had told himself to stop been silly as he wasn’t going abroad but was still staying in the uk "

No accounting for fecking idiots. Sadly.

MyBrexitGoesOnHoliday · 26/09/2018 07:49

I think she tried to have her cake and eat it but as the EU is clearly not having it, she’d rather have the full on free market, low tax system and let the plebs deal with the fall out.

It has to be said when DC said he was going to go after benefits claimants, reduce benefits, go into full on austerity etc... people STILL voted conservative even when it would clearly affect them negatively. So why wouldn’t they do so again, esp if they fear JC so much that this wouod be ready to accept anything rather than him?

lonelyplanetmum · 26/09/2018 07:49

Anyway how absurd is it that a country reaches such a point that the PM or President needs to give reassurances to investors that the country is pro business.

Choosing cabinet ministers who don't go around saying " Fuck business" may help of course.

MyBrexitGoesOnHoliday · 26/09/2018 07:52

Switzerland is a rich country though. The U.K. won’t be after Brexit. It also has been thriving with banks and the financial sector high I don’t think the U.K. will to the same extend. And it has agreements with the EU.

bellinisurge · 26/09/2018 08:00

"Shami is the only one who is just marginally better known within the Labour Party than outside it, all the others are better known by the electorate than within the Party."
Y'know, Shami. She's the one that didn't say anything while a Jewish MP was harangued by an anti-Semite at the launch of her report into anti-semitism in the Labour Party. And Jezza is the one there who stood and looked clueless.

borntobequiet · 26/09/2018 08:06

Lonely, I hope you don't mind if I nick some all of your version of the AIBU!

pointythings · 26/09/2018 08:07

The level of political ignorance among the general public can't be overestimated... My lovely hairdresser came round yesterday. She's in her late 20s. She didn't know that the ROI is an independent country and in the EU. Sigh.

lonelyplanetmum · 26/09/2018 08:08

Born Of course not..i tend to be exasperatedly chippy though so you can probably be more tactful!

1tisILeClerc · 26/09/2018 08:20

Corporation tax is going to have to be very low to overcome the new WTO tariffs and be profitable for outside investment. Maybe workers will have to work for free or maybe a 'pay to work' scheme?
We are already competing with the pay rates in India, Bangladesh and China.

MyBrexitGoesOnHoliday · 26/09/2018 08:23

Well isn’t it what DD (I Think??) said befire? That if that level for wages is good enough for people in India, then it shouod be good enough for the british too

Peregrina · 26/09/2018 08:24

Britain will be “unequivocally pro-business” after it leaves the European Union, Theresa May will promise investors.

I recall that she also said "The country was open for business" at the 2016 Tory Conference. The only trouble is that people judge by her behaviour, not her words, and decided to vote with their feet and start leaving, or the other way, not come, and with the Windrush Generation we saw how long standing British Subjects were treated. So they thought "No thanks." Businesses have been trying to get her ear now for two years and so far, she hasn't wanted to know, so they have to make their own contingency plans.

people STILL voted conservative even when it would clearly affect them negatively.

Like the woman who was briefly famous after being on Question Time - they didn't realise that it affected them, it was those other people. However, with May's proposed 'dementia tax' the pensioners did wake up enough to realise that it would be them.

Shorter Macron at the UN:

threadreaderapp.com/thread/1044622608652791808.html

Whatever you think of him, this is an important speech.

HesterThrale · 26/09/2018 08:48

Macron's speech held some opposite ideas to Trump's. This is interesting:

Macron makes an impassioned defence of the Paris Climate Agreement, and says the rest of the world will move ahead with the Paris system even after (and if) the US pulls out.
He says no trade agreement should be signed with a country that is not in the climate pact.

And the postscript:
People seem to be surprised about #Macron's statement that France will not sign any trade deal with a country not in the #ParisAgreement (ie, the US) - but this has been stated government policy for months and is backed by the EU.

That would preclude the UK from making trade deals with the US, if it were to adhere to that. Can't see Fox with that level of principle, though.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 26/09/2018 09:00

But why does no one listen? It is beyond belief that millions embraced one sentence of pure fiction on a bloody bus. Yet this substantiated factual clear specific warning is ignored.

Experts, Lonely, experts. They’ve had enough of them...
