Westminstenders: Operation Yellowhammer 1q

RedToothBrush · 09/09/2018 11:11

Boris Johnson is clearing the decks for a leadership challenge.

I guess that means that the Brexit we get all depends on what George, Michael and Boris decide over lunch and how good Operation Yellowhammer is.

With Boundary changes I am in a Tory/LibDem marginal. The changes ought to make it more Tory having moved a couple of villages in, but there has been a lot of housebuilding going on in those areas. If these people are not local of the true-blue colour, but people priced out of London, then who knows how they will vote?

As for WW2 by about 1938 Governments knew that a war was likely, so began to prepare. Yes, they tried to avert war because they weren't ready and no one in their right mind wants war, but they weren't just going 'Project Fear' or whatever a 1930's slogan would be. It's one thing too to expect the populace to 'get behind' fighting a Dictator, (although plenty of the upper classes admired Hitler). It's quite another to expect us to 'get behind' self inflicted woes asked for by a quarter of the populace, when they didn't know exactly what was being asked of them.

Damn, I am to late to register to go to {Inaugural Battery Metals Conference} in New York, I was so looking forward to it!

Interesting article noting that this is the sort of EU behaviour that lies behind peoples beliefs which drove them to vote Leave ...

.
.
.

It's also noteworthy that additional requirements will be delivered through the use of "delegated acts" instead of implementing acts: something that will hamstring whoever runs the registry while make it harder to react to constant ongoing changes in the DNS market.

In short, civil servants have decided to insert themselves into a dynamic market based on an ideological concept of how the internet works by adding unnecessary new rules over the objections of people actually working in that market.

It's exactly this sort of nonsense that drove many in the UK to vote for Brexit in the first place

BigChocFrenzy · 15/09/2018 09:07

Why some hardcore Remainers want JRM to lead the UK out of the EU

Basically, because Brexit is a cult, which must be allowed to prove itself a disaster for the country,
or it will not die but become even more dangerous & extreme.

http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2018/09/15/why-we-must-all-now-be-with-rees-mogg-the-case-against-a-sudden-reversal-of-brexit/
...
said of Brexit that it could best be understood as a type of cult,
played out on a vast – and therefore catastrophic – national stage.
...
This is what we face on 29 March next year:
a national suicide as an escape from the admission of terrible error – death rather than repentance and reversal.

What can those of us who are not cult members, who watch aghast on the sidelines, do?
...
.If Brexit were indeed to be formally reversed, UKIP would revive, and win a multitude of seats in the European Parliament in the May 2019 election
< or new extremists would at the next EP, maybe even an EDL-led movement >
...
At home, the fights with the EU over the reversal of Brexit would suddenly become the new casus belli.
...
Nothing would be settled because none of the core problems that have given rise to this Brexit madness would have been addressed.
What are these?

First the sense of entitlement that pervades English culture,
a sense of exceptionalism that makes even other faded post-colonial powers seem modest.

Second, the ongoing absence of any kind of loyalty whatsoever to the EU,
a relationship perpetually presented in transactional terms
but with the bargains that come our way being always hidden while the costs get shouted from the rooftops.

Third, the constitutional illiteracy of a society that boasts of having no constitution,
where power is exercised informally in accordance with unwritten conventions
and in which no serious reflection on the rule of law and respect for human rights has ever occurred

Even on women's forums, the Westministender threads are the exception
Seems to be. Sad
I am mildly curious about your possible interest in male oriented Brexit
Confused
Sorry, I must have been unclear. I am just wondering if there are any more male forums discussing this and if not why not.

The GC issue may be relevant. As more mainstream men (and sadly extremely right wing MPs) are joining in the debate, the issue is becoming more widely known about. James Kirkup in The Spectator has been clear eyed, and is bringing in a broader demographic. Grass roots campaigning is also bearing some fruit for that issue. Political campaigns are usually won on breadth of appeal.

I'm still wondering why Mogg didn't immediately usher his children inside that building away from that shouty old anarchist Hmm Most parents would have?

missmoon · 15/09/2018 09:33

Regarding male forums, a colleague recently mentioned that on his obscure cycling forum there is a lively discussion about Brexit (they are mostly leavers due to age etc.). I suspect this is happening across many other online spaces, but they are mostly invisible unless you are already involved.

MumsNet is certainly doing it's bit in keeping Brexit in the corner.
Having just listened to last nights R4 Any Questions it is good to hear that the leave guy (Jenkyn?) has such a firm grip on reality (not).
With the interesting 'stuff' that RTB, DGR and BCF and others put up on this thread it is about as much 'Brexit' as most can take, and they are still ahead of the 'broadcast news' curve.
My other main timewaster 'internet' forum is technical and Brexit doesn't feature at all.

lonelyplanetmum · 15/09/2018 10:24

BCF thanks so much for that LSE blog.

I found it interesting that Professor Gearty used the term catharsis. If anyone remembers a dozen threads ago everyone was talking about the UKs hubris. Proudly (as a comprehensive girl) I checked up the next stages of Greek tragedy namely nemesis (being economic down turn, replacement of the NHS , starved state education etc) then finally catharsis.

I am increasingly of the view that perhaps nemesis is inevitable and essential. I can't decide if that's just defeatist, passively martyrish and giving in to bullies, or if it is the only solution as the blog also suggests.

If the ERG and the extreme voters are given enough rope yes they'll hang themselves, but who and what else too?

" A collective catharsis can only be achieved by putting the chief believers of Brexit in charge... even if the price is a catastrophically hard exit from the EU."

"But the whole ship needs to be sailed into disaster by a captain of unimpeachable cultist authority. And that is Rees-Mogg not Boris Johnston or Michael Gove, opportunists both. If it is to be surrender, servitude or chaos it must be unequivocally on the Brexiteers’ watch."

What constitutes a "male" forum ?

I frequent a lot of forums, and once the trollbots are removed, the discussion isn't much different to here. Facts are presented, ignored, and decried in favour of soundbite replies.

The only space which is significantly different is when you get into nerdy techie forums, where generally remainers hold sway. Quite similar to the fact that there aren't any notable groups of scientist backing Leave.

lonelyplanetmum · 17/09/2018 08:03

Just saw this and thought I'd add that it's not just techie forums.Any specialist website or publication are all opposed to relinquishing EU membership.

It is astonishing that few politicians listen. Those who know a lot about their particular sector are passionately opposed to the path we are taking.

I saw one of my former neighbours who is a** senior NHS consultant and she is devastated about the effect on the NHS off staff leaving increasing the pressure from the underfunding..

Here's a reminder of a previous post. Most links are a few months old but still valid.
