Any remainers here who don't think civilisation is about to collapse?

Die hard remainer here. Was gutted with referendum result, but I think it'll probably be a bit crap after for a while, then it'll level out and basically be fine. Don't think society will collapse.

Apparently this is a very unpopular opinion and either I should be a defiant leaver saying all will be wonderful and we'll have our sovereignty back and our blue passports and all those nasty foreigners will be gone, or I should be boarding up all my doors and windows and preparing myself for economic collapse and societal disintegration?

Is there no one like me?! No middle ground????

What jobs do people think are going to be lost? Genuine question. My DH works in finance (no we are not minted before anyone starts, he works in a support role), and he is not worried and nor are any of his colleagues.

Where you unaware that law and order existed and the rioters where stopped and quite a few punished?

bellinisurge · 30/07/2018 16:09

I'm a prepper. I voted Remain. I don't think civilisation is going to collapse. I'm ready for a few problems which might arise when we leave. If they don't arise, I'm prepped for bad weather which we always have here.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 30/07/2018 16:09

Same thing can be seen in the riots after WW1

mineisarossini · 30/07/2018 16:10

I am/was hoping for a decent deal, seeing that as a compromise. I am surprised by the level of stockpile threads, most of us are fairly reasonable and yet there is definitely a level of hysteria being whipped up that reminds me of those bad American end of the world movies.
I can’t bear to watch the news, I would like to see the return of civilised debate.

Toyboysrus · 30/07/2018 16:11

I think we will end up with a wishy washy BINO thats barely noticeable tbh. Goods/products from abroad may be slightly more expensive as harder to import but goods/products from this country may be cheaper as harder to export elsewhere so will be sold here instead.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 30/07/2018 16:12

I am not aware that any remainer suggested civilisation would collapse. Remainers have simply pointed out the dire economic and social consequences of Brexit. This happens to be backed up by the governments own impact assessments.

The UK leaves the EU in March I have started buying a few extra tins of food. This is not panicking it is preparing for a possible no deal. Leavers seem to have a problem with this as it clearly pisses on their fantasy that Brexit was going to be beneficial for ordinary people. Now success is measured by people not starving to death.

End of civilisation? No. End of the UK? Possibly.

Alibaba87 · 30/07/2018 16:12

It’ll be fine. A period of economic turmoil yes, but I think lots of things won’t change.

juneau · 30/07/2018 16:12

You're right ConstantlyCold, we've had peace and prosperity for a long time now (bar a few small-scale disturbances), and a lot of people haven't lived through civil unrest. In the 1970s and 1980s there were plenty of strikes and quite a few riots, but I was just a kid then and so many adults now weren't even born, so they don't remember. People have become complacent and think 'That couldn't happen here'.

bellinisurge · 30/07/2018 16:15

Genuinely don't really see a Remainer consensus for "civilisation is going to collapse ". Some people are worried. Preppers like me and plenty of others have been saying "no need - here's some advice ". People are still fucking angry. Not the same as "civilisation is going to collapse ".

Sounds very sensible bell. I've seen some of your posts on other threads and found them very helpful.

I'm sorry, I'm not really sure what you mean by that?

I'm sure I heard on the radio that maybe things like olives and capers might be short for a while, but I can't get worked up about that.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 30/07/2018 16:20

Possible break up of the UK and reunification of Ireland.

ConstantlyCold · 30/07/2018 16:21

Were you aware that I never suggested the rioters weren’t stopped?

Cattenberg · 30/07/2018 16:22

Bloodylovepotatoes, I was made redundant from my job last spring. The company had suffered a massive drop in sales following the referendum. The staff who'd been there the longest (25+ years) said it had never been that bad before. I don't want to be too specific about the company, but it was a consultancy. I now work in the public sector, so any further economic decline is going to be fun.

I still hope we can have a Norway/Switzerland style deal and avoid the worst impact. It wouldn't be my first choice but it's a compromise I could live with.

bellinisurge · 30/07/2018 16:23

Thank you@Bloodylovepotatoes . Still bloody angry. I've told my non prepper DH a few of the gems I've read on here and he is, shall we say, less indulgent of people based on how they voted. He voted Remain too. I'm all for encouraging people to help themselves if they can, regardless of how they voted. Makes all our lives easier. After we leave, I'll be more in dh's camp.

LeftRightCentre · 30/07/2018 16:23

I don't think it's the end of civilisation as we know it, but we are considering moving abroad, tbh.

Very sorry to hear that Flowers.

People seem to forget that the real litmus test for Brexit will be just how many jobs will be lost.

megletthesecond · 30/07/2018 16:26

I don't think it'll be carnage.
But being a bit crap for a while (fortnight or so) might be the straw that breaks a few camels backs for a while.

SoloD · 30/07/2018 16:26

Don't think we are doomed at all, but we will be poorer to the tune of £1000s each. It may devastate the city of London as a financial center, which would be a shame given the amount of tax they pay, but it's not life or death.

Just annoyed jobs on the line for a decision people took after being misinformed.

Ta1kinpeace · 30/07/2018 16:26

IF There is a Cliff Edge no deal hard Brexit
or IF we leave the Customs union without a proper transition, there will be significant repurcussions

  • fresh food supplies to supermarkets (Beast from the East with bells and whistles) will get stuck at customs
  • parts supplies for manufacturers will get stuck at customs and impact on productivity and the viability of zombie companies
  • stock for retailers will get stuck at customs
  • travel companies will become ultra cautious about passports / visas / car hire etc etc causing added costs and delays

However I firmly believe that the UK government will blink first and we will get a Norway style BINO

which is still much worse than what we had before the vote.

clownfaces · 30/07/2018 16:28

I votes Remain. I was disappointed that more people voted to exit, but the people have spoken. Let's just get it over with.
I do not predict the end of the world or riots. I'm in my 50's and can recall disturbances we have had. I am not prepping at all. I think suppliers will have enough stock to see us through and some threads I've seen are whipping up hysteria.

littletike · 30/07/2018 16:29

What jobs do people think are going to be lost?

Some companies are already moving premises abroad because of the uncertainty of trade rules including banks and finance companies. In my city any problems related to trade/customs or EU nationals being able to work here are going to see massive job losses especially in my local town - that will then have a knock on effect to other trades locally... Pubs, sandwich shops even DIY tradesman because let's face it of you haven't got a job you aren't going to do your house up...
