Brexit

Any remainers here who don't think civilisation is about to collapse?

Die hard remainer here. Was gutted with referendum result, but I think it'll probably be a bit crap after for a while, then it'll level out and basically be fine. Don't think society will collapse.

Apparently this is a very unpopular opinion and either I should be a defiant leaver saying all will be wonderful and we'll have our sovereignty back and our blue passports and all those nasty foreigners will be gone, or I should be boarding up all my doors and windows and preparing myself for economic collapse and societal disintegration?

Is there no one like me?! No middle ground????

I guess we'll know in January if it's likely to be NoDeal.
If NoDeal, I'm thinking to buy any nice gadget things in Jan-Feb time, like maybe a new laptop or phone, etc. Things with hefty surcharges, high VAT, tariffs, complicated supply chains, etc.

My view is this, and I hope free speech is allowed.

  1. the Leave vote was unexpected.
  2. Leaving the EU had nothing to do with ordinary people's lives, merely a Tory Party struggle for control
  3. No thought was given as to the effect of Leaving on us all.
  4. The proponents of Brexit don't give a damn about those who may be affected. They will never be.
  5. Theresa May would be so respected if she just said "fuck this, I will not support Brexit because it will impact so much on our people and economy, I'm out of here"
  6. Talk is cheap, let the Brexit proponents give us a clue.
  7. I think I need to have a break somewhere the bewildered are catered for, since it all makes no sense to me right now!
8.Only a few months to go. Strap yourselves in, buy your tuna, pasta, water, and medicines. NOW.
  1. I give up.

a fair synopsis

keyboardkate · 06/08/2018 22:51

@Ta1kinpeace

There is zero there in Brexit for me and my family now. As if there ever was!

Not getting any positives from it at all. Wish it were different, but it's not happening.

Not really sure why we'd need to buy water. Our water doesn't come from Europe. Does it?!?

Talkstotrees · 07/08/2018 06:48

No, but water treatment and the water distribution network require power, some of our power comes from the EU...

The UK is still one of the richest countries in the world so it has some reserves (how that ties with so much poverty in the UK is beyond me. Well, actially it isn't -> low tax country that doesn't redistribute wealth).

I think if the UK crashes out, there will be weeks of everything grinding to a halt purely because people won't know what to do, both on the UK side as on the EU side. Unless there is about 6 months of preperation.

Afterwards the UK will make some sort of deal (probably an off-the-shelf deal) and everything will be back to normal.

It's the weeks of issues that are a real problem though as vulnerable people could be at risk. Again, if the government prepares for that and makes specific deals for things like insulin and radioactive isotopes (to name a few), things could be ok in the end.

Will they be better? No possible way that the UK could ever be better out of the EU. Too small a market to be able to make better trade deals that the EU can. Plus the cost of running all the agencies that are now shared between 28 countries all on it's own will be huge.

Ta1kinpeace · 07/08/2018 13:12

Um no. The UK Government has a mountain of debt, no reserves at all.

prettybird · 07/08/2018 18:18

Scotland has oil reserves Wink And water. And is self sufficient for energy. And meat.

We're a bit short of fruit and veg though - but I'm sure we can put more of the country under polytunnels Wink

Plus we need more immigrants Grin

bellinisurge · 07/08/2018 20:20

"everything will be back to normal. " So retailers won't pass on massive tariff increases to consumers?Hmminteresting idea of what normal is.

LineRunner · 07/08/2018 21:24

'Normal' will be increases in food prices, I think.

AdaHopper · 07/08/2018 21:35

If the deal is to be in the single market, then there are no tarrifs and things will be back to normal.
I don't see another way that is remotely sane. And if a crash-out causes so much chaos, then there will be appetite for a Norway-style deal.

bellinisurge · 07/08/2018 21:37

@AdaHopper - don't tell BeLeavers that the only sensible way is to be in the single market.

keyboardkate · 07/08/2018 22:30

Ada,

There will be no deal after a crash out love, Norway or otherwise. Any deals must be agreed before Exit Day. Best to stay with the four freedoms and admit what a clusterfuck this whole thing is. The incompetence and hubris of the British side is breathtaking in its arrogance.

The pressure is on now.

Rosstac · 08/08/2018 17:18

LineRunner there is always price rises, the farmers are saying this dry weather will push up prices, it’s always to hot, to cold , to dry, to wet, let’s get them prices up

bellinisurge · 08/08/2018 17:33

@Rosstac , yeah, 'cos farmers are all liars Hmm

Rosstac · 08/08/2018 17:51

bellinisurge I wouldn’t say their liars just opportunist and business men, never see prices go down after a good harvest

Figmentofmyimagination · 08/08/2018 18:05

I think it will depend on your individual position. If you have plenty of social capital - connections - you and your family will probably be ok.

Figmentofmyimagination · 08/08/2018 18:09

I often think of Argentina in the context of brexit pretty. Scary stuff.

LineRunner · 08/08/2018 18:32

Thank you Rosstac for explaining agricultural economics to those of us far less intelligent than you think you are.

keyboardkate · 08/08/2018 18:40

Wonder who will pay CAP subsidy etc. benefits to UK farmers post exit.

Anyone know? UK farmers seem to be very quiet at the minute. That makes me nervous!

UnnecessaryFennel · 08/08/2018 18:43

'Farmers are opportunists'. That's a hot bullshit Brexit take if ever there was one.

Would you say your farming experience was extensive, Rosstac?

lljkk · 08/08/2018 20:07

Farmers are opportunists.. but they can't insure cargo ships travelling with spare tractor parts from the Middle East, control the weather, control diesel production, produce food cheaply & pay well for field labour, lots of things they cannot do much as they might try. Farmers are very much at mercy of many forces, including international markets.

Rosstac · 08/08/2018 20:51

lljkk It’s funny that prices never fell dramatically when oil prices crashed from $100 to $25

lljkk · 08/08/2018 20:58

Are you going for a "The rich people always shaft us" line, Rosstac?

Most the price of oil or petrol in UK is the duty, AFAIK. Which is excellent b/c it means long term price stability. Quite different from, say, USA, their petrol prices fluctuate like crazy with international barrel-of-oil price and it means havoc for businesses that have high costs related to oil.

Another benefit is that prices are slow to rise again when the oil goes back to $100. But the stability also means that when you hear about $100 fall to $25, there isn't much savings to pass on to consumers. The people making gains are direct investors, anyone who gets a dividend for instance.

The way I understand it, the prices in things we buy, that might seem linked to oil price, only fall if we get sustained long term reductions in prices of commodities, and even then, not much reduction b/c most the cost is duty.

Just now talk on radio about how gas prices are going up now even though gas price is down a bit... because all the stores from last winter got burnt thru with the Beast, and the gas companies have to replenish their stockpiles now. Sometimes effects are delayed or advanced more than you would imagine.
