Is there any way Brexit can be stopped?

I think there will be more civil unrest if it goes ahead than if it doesn't.

At this point, what can we do to stop it happening? People are going to die. And all because of the hubris of David Cameron and racism.

Our MPs represent us but do not have to slavishly follow the wishes of the people

And yet MPs were unable to make a decision and decided to ask the people. And after the people gave their opinion they didn't slavishly decide to follow our wishes, they chose to enact them.

Its called democracy. No one forced anyone into anything, its all been by consent.

nicebitofquiche · 31/07/2018 21:07

No. It won't be stopped. Keep calm.

nicebitofquiche · 31/07/2018 21:08

Who believed the red bus? Do you know their names?

BakedBeans47 · 31/07/2018 21:17

Are you saying the elite should ban voting and just dictate to people what is best for them because they are to thick to understand issues?

Well I certainly wouldn’t say that. But we all get to vote in elections for the people who make political decisions on our behalf. I think having referendums is unnecessary

Peregrina · 31/07/2018 21:35

Yet more twaddle from fangirl. A slender majority said they'd like to leave the EU. No one said they wanted a hard brexit, indeed the leave poster boys like Farage were extolling the Norway version. Theresa May decided to follow the advice of her unelected advisers.

We have a parliamentary democracy although I am not sure that fangirl or Theresa May remember that. Theresa May had to be forced by a court case to consult Parliament.

Moussemoose · 31/07/2018 21:50

MPs were capable of making a decision DC called for a referendum for reasons pertaining to the internal politics of the Tory party.

It's called democracy - As I have already explained we have a representative democracy the referendum was advisory. Parliament is sovereign and can decide, if it has the nerve.

Democracy is not a one size fits all answer to every question it is a little bit more complicated than that.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 31/07/2018 21:52

Peregrina, I think you will find 498 MPs voted to trigger A50. aka a parliamentary democracy.

No where near a slender majority, why are you so against parliamentary democracy?

Peregrina · 31/07/2018 21:53

I must say, I don't think many MPs covered themselves in glory with the legislation leading up to the Referendum. They could and should have insisted on many more safeguards. Cameron would have got it through with his slender majority, but at least they would have been in a much stronger position to say that this shitshow was not what they voted for.

Moussemoose · 31/07/2018 21:54

And Parliament can change its mind because we have no constitutional restraints on parliament.

Peregrina · 31/07/2018 21:56

I am all for Parliamentary Democracy, a cross post shows that I think the MPs showed a dereliction of duty.

Electrascoffee · 31/07/2018 23:21

'Are you saying the elite should ban voting and just dictate to people what is best for them because they are to thick to understand issues?'

No, I'm saying that it's impossible for most people to have been in a position to make an informed decision because the leave campaign was lies.

Yes, the buzz around election interference is getting bigger and bigger all the time. Did anyone else see the story yesterday that Facebook is currently proactively taking down disinformation accounts before these next US midterm elections?

Notice how they've announced that so soon after the parliamentary committee published their damning report on microtargetted disinformation by Cambridge Analytica and specifically called out Leave.EU's the activities with Russia in the referendum, as well as in foreign elections.

Nat6999 · 01/08/2018 06:30

Doesn't anyone who is complaining about the referendum being based on lies realise that most of the elections are based on lies to get votes?

OrdinarySnowflake · 01/08/2018 06:44

Nat6999 - Yes but, we normally get to change our minds at the next election if it turns out we were lied to. We are not stuck with a Conservative government forever because the country voted that way last time, but on the EU referendum we are stuck with the decision it seems, unless we can get a 2nd referendum now it's clear to more people 'project fear' was just spelling out how it would be, and the Leave campaign was lying.

Nat6999 · 01/08/2018 07:31

OrdinarySnowflake Yes we have another election & then get lied to again, that's the problem. David Cameron waved the notion of the referendum under everyone's noses & then did a runner as he knew what chaos it would cause. The only hope now is that there is enough political unrest in the country to extend Article 50 to get either a proper deal that won't leave us in too much of a mess (bugger all hope of this) or a general election & get a government that will allow a vote on the deal we get offered or stop us leaving.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 01/08/2018 07:31

Doesn't anyone who is complaining about the referendum being based on lies realise that most of the elections are based on lies to get votes?

What’s your point? That we should just accept the outcomes of all and any lying, cheating campaign because everyone does it?

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 01/08/2018 07:35

Who believed the red bus? Do you know their names?

There are a few tweets in this article from people who belived the bus. What’s your point?

bellinisurge · 01/08/2018 07:36

Article 50 cannot be extended unless the other 27 agree to it. All of them. The snowflakeball is rolling down the hill and it can't be stopped.
Like we tell our kids ..... consequences.

jasjas1973 · 01/08/2018 07:45

Would nt always agree with Fangirl BUT Parliament did overwhelmingly vote for Art50 and we can;'t complain about the referendum and then also complain about representative democracy in action too!
thats having your cake and eating it!!!

I do believe (in the event of no deal) they ll be an extension to the negotiating period, it is the only logical way forward and though TM might be incompetent, the EU is not and have shown themselves to have run rings around the Tories.
May is breaking her holiday plans to visit Macron, i think the penny is starting to drop on what a no deal means.

bellinisurge · 01/08/2018 08:08

Why would there be an extension to the negotiating period?

Childrenofthesun · 01/08/2018 08:15

Didn't Michel Barnier say they would only offer an extension to Article 50 if there was a change of political landscape in the UK before March 2019? I can see that they wouldn't want to prolong the Chinese water torture of current negotiations with the May government, although at least they no longer have DD to contend with. I do wonder whether May might call an election before March in the hope of getting an extension (or hoping for a Labour-led government so she can wash her hands of the whole thing).

Nat6999 · 01/08/2018 08:18

There's something in the triggering of Article 50 that if the country wanting to leave is under political unrest & the other member states agree the timescales for negotiations can be extended.

nicebitofquiche · 01/08/2018 08:43

Wiseup. My point is that a lot of remainers cling on to the belief that leavers voted leave because of that bus. I don't know anyone who took any notice of it.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 01/08/2018 09:04

Just because you don’t know anyone who voted to leave because of the bus doesn’t mean that nobody voted to leave because of the bus.

There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that people did vote to leave because of the bus. The claim on the bus was a lie (or deliberate obfuscation if you prefer).

What’s your point?

Peregrina · 01/08/2018 09:38

The BBC interviewed people who wanted more money for the NHS. It was reported that at the last election Tory candidates had difficulties on the doorsteps explaining away why there was no more money for the NHS. So yes, the Leave side knew what they were doing and knew that this would win them votes. The fact that they were never going to deliver didn't worry them, because they didn't expect to win.
