Why are they allowed to get away with it?

No replies wanted, just need this put out there.

Huge ignorance displayed on this thread.

Channel 4 news, like all broadcast news, is regulated by Ofcom and as such subjext to Section 5 of the Ofcom code, due impartiality. It is NOT just the BBC that is supposed to present news objectively and impartially. And Channel 4 DOES receive public funding.

I agree with you OP that channel 4 news is blatantly pro-Remain, and you should complain to Ofcom about this.

LoveInTokyo · 20/07/2018 17:06

Yeah, see how that goes.

"Hi Ofcom. I'd like to complain about the fact that Channel 4 is reporting the fact that Brexit is a massive shit show and I want to hear about the cake and unicorns we will be getting. Hello? Hello...?"

TheElementsSong · 20/07/2018 17:09

you should complain to Ofcom about this.

And you should too. With itemised examples.

LoveInTokyo · 20/07/2018 17:09

As a PP said, the job of a news broadcaster is to present the news. Even if there is a duty of impartiality (which Channel 4 is not subject to in the same way that the BBC is), impartiality doesn't mean that when some absolute shit is going down you have to say, "On the one hand, this is really bad. But on the other hand, some people disagree and think it's really good."

No.

Brexit is a shitshow and no honest broadcaster can really say anything to the contrary.

I'm sorry if you prefer fake news and propaganda to real news, but that's your problem.

pointythings · 20/07/2018 17:10

Pointing out that there are some fairly enormous downsides to Brexit is not being pro-Remain.
Questioning and challenging politicians about Brexit is not pro-Remain.
I don't hear a word from Leavers about BBC pro-Brexit bias, or about the bias of most of the print press. Strange, that...

Peregrina · 20/07/2018 17:31

It should certainly be possible to report that John Redwood has committed his advice in print not to invest in the UK, that Rees-Mogg is moving the jurisdiction of some of his investments to Ireland. Both Leavers and not 'fake news'.

Maidsrus · 20/07/2018 19:37

I keep having a peek at this thread, and what do you know - still no-one has been able to come up with the positive news they want to hear about Brexit.

No news outlet is pro-Brexit because there is no fecking good news!

SwedishEdith · 20/07/2018 19:42

So, tonight there's Madeleina Kay (Remainer), Andrew Lilico (crazy Brexiter) and Chris Philps (Torybot). Hmm, how, on earth do they get away with it?

frumpety · 22/07/2018 09:01

Oddboots I had the statistic at 74% of the UK population who didn't actually vote leave , may have rounded it up ever so slightly so may be closer to 73.5 %.

Still a massive majority of the UK population who didn't actually vote to leave the EU though Smile

falcon5 · 22/07/2018 09:14

And I'm just going to go back to an earlier comment... why is everyone always so adamant what leaving the eu "meant" to voters... so "ending FOM". You can say some people voted for that sure but you can't say "all.leave voters voted for that" because... no one knows. And if you talk to people you know not every one who did vote leave voted for the same thing at the time they voted. That was the whole thing with yes/ no it was do you want this or "not this" with "not this" containing... whatever you wanted it to contain. And yet all these politicians people and media suddenly have psychic insight into the minds of 17.2 million people and know exactly what they meant by "not this".

frumpety · 22/07/2018 09:15

But back to the OP , I have noticed a bit of a tide turning in the reporting of Brexit over the last month or so. It seemed to be very much 'will of the people' type stuff post referendum, but of course then there were 2 long years ahead , when the UK was going to get a fantastic deal from the EU and the rest of the world. Less than 8 months to go now and things haven't been resolved. Europe and the UK are now putting in contingency plans for a no deal scenario.

The days of Why ? are over I am afraid , we need to see our media asking those in power How? and When ?

Tick tock goes the Article 50 clock Smile

I’m not sure if you know how elections / referendums work.

The end result is based purely on votes received - we can’t assume that the people who couldn’t be bothered to vote would have voted Remain - they may have voted to leave?

52% of U.K. citizens who cared enough about their future voted to leave. That’s more than the 48% who decided they wanted to stay chained to their EU masters.

You, & C4 news, need to respect the vote of the British people or shut the fuck up.

Hey, can we C&P this on every Brexit thread? It's a winning argument!

I won't. Make me.

frumpety · 22/07/2018 09:25

The government and parliament has a duty to the UK population as a whole though Surfer , not just the 26.5% who voted to leave the EU.
I know you don't like me saying that and I am sorry if it upsets you , but it is true.

Leaving the EU isn't the same as a GE , in a GE you go for the party who you think best represents your personal interests, sometimes you get lucky and they win and actually abide by their election manifesto , sometimes you don't , but you always get the opportunity to vote again.

prettybird · 22/07/2018 09:25

Let's just give up on elections and leave the current Government in power forever. Send the rest of the MPs home. That would save money.

After all the people have spoken and couldn't possibly ever change their minds Hmm

Confused

Better than having a hard-left Marxist labour government in power. That really would be a disaster.

PostNotInHaste · 22/07/2018 09:34

No you are very very wrong Surferjet . Yes there were 17,4 million who voted to leave. However that leaves 47.6 million who didn’t vote. Yes some because they could be be arsed but I know some who didn’t vote as they felt they didn’t have enough information to make an informed decision and that figure includes many children .

There are also people who voted Leave who have changed their minds. My elderly neighbours are 2 who have done this. Sadly we buried one of them last week but about 4 months ago he said to his DD that he feels he didn’t do enough research pre referendum and if he had a vote now would vote to remain. His wife feels the same.

We owe it to the 47.6 million carry on speaking out when we see the utter devastation this is causing to the lives of many households in the UK and UK citizens living abroad who are effected and our children who are the generation who are hugely effected by these in numerous ways, to speak out about what is happening now.

We all will have to look back at our roles in this in the future. We have the benefit of wide access to history to reflect on and we owe it to the 47.6 million to speak out when we see utter insanity happening and we will not be silenced because you and others like you say so.

Mistigri · 22/07/2018 09:39

You, & C4 news, need to respect the vote of the British people or shut the fuck up.

We should quote the fuck out of this. It's a disgusting and unBritish sentiment that tells you everything you need to know about exactly how much some Brexiteers respect British values.

surferjet · 22/07/2018 09:39

& Why are C4 news obsessed with Arron Banks & vote leave over spending privately donated money by about 50 quid?

How much of my money did the Remain campaign spend?
15 million wasn’t it?
15 million of tax payers money & they still lost.

Welcome to Brexit Britain!

(unless your foreign or look foreign or have a funny accent, in which case bugger of back to bongo bongo land)

surferjet · 22/07/2018 09:41

Remainers do not respect British values.
They want to overturn the referendum & stay in the EU.

What’s respectful about that?

OP posts:
SoloD · 22/07/2018 09:43

surferjet

a) Because it was way more than £50 (The Remain campaign spent the amount they were allowed to by law)
b) Becuase they broke the law
c) Because it appears they had a lot of contact with the Russian's which they tried to hide
d) Because it appears that Russia may have offered business deals based on Banks spending that money.

prettybird · 22/07/2018 09:44

If referendum results last forever, why aren't we respecting the one in 1975? Confused

TheElementsSong · 22/07/2018 09:44
