bellinisurge Sorry but I have to pull you up on y2k , my BIL earn 100,000s doing nothing in many big corporations who were worried about y2k, took their money and done nothing and was a hero when nothing happened on the 01/01/2000, because on most machines nothing was going to happen

Rosstac · 26/07/2018 13:41

TheElementsSong Not a lot by recent history

Yes, remain.

bellinisurge · 26/07/2018 13:43

@Rosstac - my personal knowledge and anecdata is different to your personal knowledge and anecdata about Y2K.

TheElementsSong · 26/07/2018 13:43

Not a lot by recent history

????????

bellinisurge · 26/07/2018 13:47

@Rosstac no one likes to admit they were duped.

MotherofPearl · 26/07/2018 13:50

Rosstac, even if you think the economic predictions are wrong (and I very much doubt it), I want you to explain what benefits of leaving could possibly be so great as to make you willing to risk those predictions.

Talkstotrees · 26/07/2018 14:50

Rosstac, my DH is a computer programmer and he worked bloody hard on Y2K.

Cattenberg · 26/07/2018 14:52

Work and pray
Work and pray

Live on hay
Live on hay

You'll get pie in the sky when you die
That's a lie!

Helmetbymidnight · 26/07/2018 14:55

But I s a bizarre argument full-stop.

It’s just choosing a point of moment in history with barely any parallels to Brexit and then saying ‘aha, this didn’t go badly so Brexit won’t either’

Why chose that moment? You could equally chose, say, outbreak of WW1, Spanish flu, Vietnam, ‘aha this went badly, so will brexit’

Don’t you see it makes you look stupid?

Rosstac · 26/07/2018 15:22

Talkstotrees So is my BIL and he loved it, money for old rope, as I said before not all machines were affected but he had to check them all, computers, HMI, plc’s, 90% were unaffected

Rosstac · 26/07/2018 15:23

bellinisurge Who’s been duped?

jasjas1973 · 26/07/2018 15:39

Your knowledge of y2k would suggest that you easily are.

There was some scare mongering but many systems needed patching and or hardware upgrades/replacement to be able to work with newer systems that didnt.
Sure I earned a fortune in OT but it was necessary.

TheElementsSong · 26/07/2018 15:39

he had to check them all

And would he have known that 90% weren't affected without carrying out due diligence? And is checking things are in order not work?

PineappleSunrise · 26/07/2018 15:44

He checked individual computers' human-machine interfaces for YK2 problems across public limited companies, did he? Hmm

Rosstac · 26/07/2018 15:45

TheElementsSong He was being well paid, he done as he was asked, should he refused

jasjas1973 · 26/07/2018 15:48

these things are on networks, you dont need to go to individual boxes.

glamglittergirl · 26/07/2018 15:48

Yes I would still vote to leave.

TheElementsSong · 26/07/2018 15:48

He was being well paid, he done as he was asked, should he refused

That was not even remotely what I asked Confused

Peregrina · 26/07/2018 15:49

the same experts that tried to scare us over Y2 K that was blown all out of proportion only affected a few old machines,

Debunked many times by those of us who actually worked on Y2K. If you think it wouldn't have happened, or only a few dates would have been affected cast your mind back a few weeks to the debacle of Lloyds and TSB trying to separate their systems - thousands locked out of their accounts, given access to other peoples accounts and such like. Oh yes, not a problem if you don't bank with them, but absolute shit if you did.

Greenland didn’t suffer,
Because Greenland with a population of 50,000 and one major industry fishing, spent 3 years negotiating with what was then a much smaller union, of either nine or ten members. And are still part of the Kingdom of Denmark, which is still an EU member. No comparison with a UK of 65 million and preparation being babbling 'Brexit means Brexit' and 'A red, white and blue brexit'. Maybe they had idiots who babbled Greenland exit is Greenland exit, but at least they got on with the job.

yes there will be some adjustments to begin with,
Oh yes, the NHS will be so flush with cash, they won't know how to spend it.

none of you know 100% what will happen
That goes for life generally. None of us know we will be alive tomorrow, but it doesn't mean that we don't make plans, don't buy food, don't pay the mortgage etc..

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/07/2018 15:51

Yes, Brexit will be an utter disaster for many generations to come.

Maidsrus · 26/07/2018 15:57

Brexit is nothing like y2k. People/businesses had adequate time for y2k and planned for it and fixed the issues . Why the fuck is anyone comparing with it????

No deal Brexit is 10 years of financial pain.

I’ll be fine - my mortgage is paid off more or less and I’m going to stockpile. My teenage kids may not get jobs for a few years but hopefully I can support them and see them through. But the people we think of poor now will be the ones that suffer.

TheElementsSong · 26/07/2018 16:01

those of us who actually worked on Y2K

Peregrina you sound like an expert Hmm Leavers don't listen to experts, especially middle class experts.
