.......would you vote the same as you did originally?

OP posts:
formerbabe · 17/07/2018 12:27

I can’t imagine why anyone would want to vote leave

I disagree with plenty of people's opinions but I can usually stretch my imagination enough to see why they have them.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 17/07/2018 12:27

Labour have damaged their reputation as well in my mind.

Basically it’s a whole generation of politicians on all sides who have lost the confidence of the electorate.

Personally I think the global issues make this an extremely unwise time to leave and by persuing this option we’ve done a great deal of damage to ourselves and to the EU.

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName · 17/07/2018 12:32

I feel like we are properly fucked as a nation right now. The way Brexit is being handled feels really bad and destined for failure.

I voted remain and would do again. I too am really interested in why anyone would vote leave again seeing this absolute shower of shit unfold. Anyone able to enlighten me because I don’t get it...?

GandalfsWrinklyHat · 17/07/2018 12:34

yes, leave again.

GretchenFranklin · 17/07/2018 12:35

Yes I would.

I literally can't see how Brexit benefits anyone - aside from the super rich with cash to stash.

What an almighty balls up this is.

alwaysthepessimist · 17/07/2018 12:36

yes

CluedoAddict · 17/07/2018 12:38

Yes I would still vote leave. There won't be another vote though no matter how much anyone wants one.

surferjet · 17/07/2018 12:41

100% would vote the same way ( leave )

There won’t be a 2nd referendum anyway thank god, our MP’s aren’t that stupid to go against the will of the people.

PerkingFaintly · 17/07/2018 12:42

I'd vote Remain again. I've never imagined the EU was perfect, but I thought and still think better in than out.

I wonder if anyone will be influenced by today's news that Vote Leave broke the law and have been fined and referred to the police?

Or by Arron Banks and Andy Wigmore boasting to Parliament last month that Leave.EU told lies and, as he put it, led voters up the garden path?

I think if we had another referendum it would be very close and most people would not have changed their minds.

If just finished reading a fascinating book about cognitive dissonance called "Mistakes were made, but not by me". The theory goes that a person feels so much mental discomfort when faced with evidence that contradicts their firmly held beliefs (eg "I think Brexit is going to be brilliant for the country " and "Brexit is turning out to be a disaster") that people dismiss or minimise evidence that conflicts with their views (eg remoaners are all just scare mongering, Brexit will be a massive success) and pay extraordinarily attention to evidence that confirms their views (confirmation bias). This is human nature and we all do it - Brexiteers and Remainers. The more people try to convince others their firmly held views are wrong, the more likely people are to reinforce their original beliefs.

Which is all pretty depressing really..

SmileSweetly · 17/07/2018 12:44

I voted leave, it had nothing to do with with immigration at all.

I was worried about being tied to the EU, and it's expansion (with candidates such as Turkey, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania)
And the cost of linking ourselves to much weaker economies.

The prospect of making our own laws that our courts have a final say over and not having the EU, who's courts power has grown immensely controlling life in the UK.

And the ability to focus on British companies & products and particularly British fisherman.

I would vote leave again without hesitation. The EU has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt in their dealing with this, that we should not be tied to them.

Also the way many remainers have conducted themselves has shown me some very different morals in people that I can't relate to, reinforcing my views.

Cattenberg · 17/07/2018 12:48

I voted Remain with some misgivings.

I would vote Remain wholeheartedly second time around. I never imagined we could be heading for such a hard Brexit. Even Nigel Farage was talking about a Norway-style arrangement.

I fear the corporations will have their way, and there will be a bonfire of legislation relating to employment rights, consumer protection, environmental protection and public health. I'm worried about the NHS. And I'm saddened for those who were too young to vote, but will end up paying for all this, both financially and by having fewer opportunities in life.

Rosstac · 17/07/2018 12:49

I don’t understand all this Brexit turning in to a disaster, we haven’t yet Brexited,
I’m more upset with past and previous governments that have let us join a club where you can never get out of, just plain crazy, the leave party over spending is not an issue for me as the government had 9 million spent on leaflets, which was one sided,

shirleyschmidt · 17/07/2018 12:49

@Nesssie summed up very well! Would still vote leave and those I know who did say the same.

formerbabe · 17/07/2018 12:49

I would have voted to remain if there had been a guarantee that no other countries would join.

GreenTeaPleaseSir · 17/07/2018 12:54

I would vote remain again.

How can anyone argue that the original result was valid now it's bee not proven that the leave campaign was fraudulent?

I would worry that some people would be more likely to get fixated on that there should not be another election, that they would vote leave due to that rather than thinking about what's best for the country.

Look at the mess of all the political parties. Does anyone really think that they'd manage to do the best for the country?!

And this MESS of hard / soft BREXT. LEAVERS - you votes to leave. Nothing more. You didn't vote for hard or soft Brexit. You are getting what you want. You can't complain it's not going your way as the only thing anyone voted was YES or NO.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 17/07/2018 12:54

Yes - Remain again. The conclusive 1975 vote, where the terms were clearly laid out and which signposted our future EU involvement, wasn't sacrosanct. Nor should the murky 2016 result stand unchallenged.

Stephisaur · 17/07/2018 12:56

We originally voted leave for basically the same reasons as SmileSweetly. Neither DH nor I voted because of immigration (would have been quite hypocritical of me as my Grandmother emigrated here!)

I'm not sure how I would vote now, to be honest. I'm fed up of hearing about it on the news, but I don't think my core beliefs have changed. Wanting them to shut up about it isn't really reason to change my opinions.

MissLingoss · 17/07/2018 13:01

Yes. I voted Leave, and it had nothing to do with anything any of the Leave campaigners said. Given the chance, I would have voted Leave any time since the single currency was introduced, maybe earlier. In the referendum campaign, I was looking for the Remain campaign to persuade me to change my mind. They didn't, and still haven't.

shirleyschmidt · 17/07/2018 13:02

I do think if there were another referendum, it'd be an overwhelming remain victory - except everyone would vote pretty much as they did the first time, and the result would just be rigged at the outset. The establishment has thrown the kitchen sink at this since it all started, they now know to shut it down quickly by rigging the vote and claiming the people have 'seen the light', and that would be the end of it.

FogCutter · 17/07/2018 13:03

Yes I'd vote remain again.

I thought the EU wasn't perfect but that we'd be better off trying to improve things as part of the EU rather than outside it (where we would have no say in anything).

Haven't changed my mind on that!

blackbirdbluebottle · 17/07/2018 13:03

Yes I voted leave and would still vote leave and would be really pissed off at the government for ordering a second referendum. You can't just have another vote cause you didn’t like the outcome MPs!

Mookatron · 17/07/2018 13:06

I can actually respect some of the leavers' opinions such as Stephisaur and Smilesweetly, who have actual arguments, even though I disagree, but to suggest that a second referendum would be fixed is ridiculous given a) it hasn't been planned yet and b) the first result was achieved with proven cheating.

Rosstac · 17/07/2018 13:06

FogCutter The trouble is the EU have not shown any attempt to reform, what makes you think they will even if we had stayed in ?

IpanemaChica · 17/07/2018 13:08

Same again. Remain.
