Peter Foster @pmdfoster
Spain is digging in (again) over its Gibraltar #brexit veto aheqd of #EUCO

+ Talks have "not progressed" since they broke down six weeks ago over Spanish demands for joint policing at airport. My latest.

Gosh.

It's about time the Leavers realised that Project Fear is Project Truth.

Cherrypi · 27/06/2018 11:48

Taxing over 40s does seem to be throwing more fuel on the fire of generation wars. It sounds like a dead cat to distract as well.

DGRossetti · 27/06/2018 11:58

The Tory masterplan has no place for naice women to work. They are meant to be at home bringing up the next generation of naice Tories.

Think of how the world was portrayed in 1950s films (or read Enid Blyton) and you have the utopia that Tory voters vote for. (Not that many of them realise it).

Of course, commoners must work - after all, we can't be great if the masses are feckless and lazy. So we need a social security system (or lack thereof) which ensures that nacie middle-class ladies can be SAHM, while the rabble have to work - and be seen to work - to set an example to the next generation of serfs.

Obviously trust is derived from position, not practice. So if the nice Member of Parliament says something, it must be true. Meanwhile id one of those pesky scientists dares to try and use evidence ... well that's why we prefer foreign scientists. So much easier to deport.

Immigration ? We want a lot of foreign - ideally obviously foreign workers in the UK. They are the most exploitable, and have the added advantage of keeping the indigenous population in permanent misdirection of where the fight needs to be taken. Also foreign workers have to pay tax, but not receive any benefits from it.

Education ? Well, obviously the only education the government will pay for, is education that ensures the serfs can keep the espresso bars open. Naice education can be whatever you like, since - as we see with the New World Order - knowing stuff is nowhere near as good as being born knowing naice people.

Health ? Well, just remember what we learned in the pioneer days of the internet. If you're not paying for it, you are the product. Henrietta Lacks wasn't an aberration. She was an inspiration. Why do you think the government is so keen to sell your health data ?

BrexitWife, I saw a comment this morning under a "Lack of fruit pickers leaves strawberries moulding in the fields" news story that insisted that back in the golden olde days, fruit was picked by women with children. This seemed to be viewed by the commenter has highly desirable and an obvious answer to the labour shortage.

DGRossetti · 27/06/2018 12:00

In fact, reading Enid Blyton (the unBowdlerised versions) is probably the best preparation for life in 21st century Britain - or where it's headed.

LandOfOddSocks · 27/06/2018 12:03

If anyone is going to pay more tax surely it should be Leave voters only.

Anyone listening to pmqs? All Corbyn’s questions are about brexit so far. Theresa May hasn’t answered any of them obviously.

DGRossetti · 27/06/2018 12:20

What we need is to understand what the NHS will cost the country longterm, over the next say 50 years and start working out how to get that money into the exchequer.

So, respectfully, what the fuck was "National Insurance" for all these fucking years ? Something I had no fucking choice in paying, but wasn't a "tax", and which was sold to me from before I was born as the means to pay for the welfare state ?

If you think I'm being fucking sweary, wait until the man in the fucking street hears about it.

Even though May has nothing to present at the European Council, meeting over the next 2 days,
the EU might have a response to that lack:

  • they could stop the preliminary talks on trade, which May so desperately wants,
  • they could warn of the likelihood of no-deal - and send businesses fleeing out of the UK
  • they could even walk out of all talks, saying it is pointless when the UK govt are so unserious & chaotic

Probably it is in their interests too, to spin things out a few months longer and avoid panic
but someone in the E27 might just let the cat out of the bag Hmm

because the heads of govt approval of the basic Withdrawal Agreement was supposed to be at this meeting
and the WA has not progressed since May reneneged late December
The Brexit timing schedule is screwed

...

Bebb reiterated that the government was very disappointed that the UK would indeed be a third country in the glorious post-Brexit future. Evernden took on the role of handwringer-in-chief, explaining that the UK had expected to land about a quarter of the next round of juicy Galileo contracts, but following the Brexit referendum that figure had at least halved. Direct job losses would be measured in the hundreds.

(contd)

lonelyplanetmum · 27/06/2018 13:17

How about the 'I'm alright Jack, Icarus project' ?

TheNumberfaker · 27/06/2018 13:21

Operation Pyrrhus

I think there is another march planned for September 30th in Birmingham - Tory conference.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/06/2018 14:04

Parliament yesterday - Brexiters in an EU love fest ? Hmm

Sometimes when I read these shenanigans, I think it's all a game and everyone agreed long ago to BINO:

George Hollingbery moves the motion on the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), calling it "broad and ambitious".

…says the UK has been a "leading voice" in free trade globally
and adds that ongoing support for EU agreements will send a "positive message" now
and once the UK has left the EU.

Mr Hollingbery tells the house that the EPA is estimated to be worth £3bn of GDP annually and it will result in lower prices for consumers.
…
International Trade Secretary Dr Liam Fox says he is "delighted" to be able to debate the CETA agreement.
…
"CETA is a good deal for Europe and a good deal for the United Kingdom,"
he says,
adding that this is an agreement which will boost Britain's GDP by hundreds of millions of pounds a year,
encouraging more trade and investment in the UK.

More trade and more growth results in more money for the Treasury

This is the "most advanced and ambitious" trade deal "that the EU has produced so far".
< and they realise we are leaving all this … Confused >

lonelyplanetmum · 27/06/2018 14:07

Pyrrhus is good from a 'we won' victory sense.

But I think the similarities end there as Pyrrhus was supposed to be a great leader and showed great benevolence...

Issued jointly by EMA (European Medicines Agency - which is moving from London to Amsterdam) and the EU Commission

Guidance for pharmaceutical companies to prepare for UK’s withdrawal from EU

So that’s UK pharmaceutical exports buggered too, unless we get Norway+

lonelyplanetmum · 27/06/2018 14:16

I was working and missed some thread catching up but I take it everyone saw the latest YouGov info...

Most people are not paying much attention to the Brexit process...

The regular tracking question on whether the vote to leave the EU was the right or wrong decision now consistently finds slightly more people think that Brexit was the wrong decision. This small lead has been consistent throughout 2018.

However, just because people think Brexit is the wrong decision, it doesn’t necessarily mean they think it should be reversed. They do not. When we ask what people think the government should do about leaving the EU, just over half (53%) think that it should go ahead with Brexit, mostly on its current course (42%) though 11% would prefer a softer Brexit. A fifth (21%) think that the government should call a fresh referendum instead, while 13% would prefer them just to halt Brexit altogether.

Almost half (48%) say they are either not following it closely or aren’t following it at all, and a majority (56%) think that news coverage about Brexit and the negotiations is boring.

Neither of the main political parties come out of the polling well. Just a quarter (26%) of the public believe that the Tory party has a clear policy on Brexit, while Labour fares even worse on just 14%. Although Theresa May beats Jeremy Corbyn by 32% to 14% when it comes to who people would trust more to negotiate our exit from the EU, 38% say they would trust neither.

On the whole, people think the government is handling Brexit badly. Just 20% of people think that the government is doing well at negotiating Britain’s exit from the EU, with two-thirds (67%) thinking they are doing badly. This includes a majority of both Remain and Leave voters. Half (50%) of people think that the European Union has the upper hand in negotiations and that the UK has generally accepted their demands, just 3% think that Britain is getting the better deal.

RedToothBrush · 27/06/2018 14:16

Big Chic there are many Brexiteers who simply don't have a fucking clue what the EU is, so will sign up to things that sound like the EU because the EU 'don't do that'

It's almost like Torysplaining the EU to the EU.

Maybe Brexit needs presenting like a 'game' show with Lord Sugar at his desk with reps from various industries coming on to 'pitch' and then being told 'they're fired'.

20nil · 27/06/2018 14:47

To clarify: happy to pay more tax because I am a higher than average earner and not because I am over 40. We can’t keep expecting first class services and low taxes. We need politicians to be honest about the real costs of social services.

lonelyplanetmum · 27/06/2018 14:49

I may be unimaginative but it could be presented by Boris and called " Fuck business".

BigChocFrenzy · 27/06/2018 16:35

Some people may be prepared to pay more taxes for better services (I do in Germany)

However, most would be mightily pissed to pay more taxes because the govt has driven the country over a cliff

LucheroTena · 27/06/2018 16:39

Let the over 60s pay for any budget deficit. They’re the ones who voted for this mess and use the nhs. They can go back to work to fill the jobs of the Eastern Europeans.
