If as it looks likely the U.K. will be in some form of custom Union, what should us leave voters do?

Would it be better to stay as we are ?
Go on a protest march ( hasn’t helped remain )
Make the conservatives suffer at the next GE,
Or has anyone else got any suggestions ( no not you remainers, with just get on with it was a waste of time anyway etc etc)

jugglingsatsumas Don’t start this again you know full well that we cannot control probably the number of EU national coming to live or work in the U.K., I don’t want to go down that path again

Peregrina · 11/05/2018 13:21

I certainly will talk about 10 men and a dog, because I have been on EU demos, and there were 50,000, or 100,000 in another case. Maybe the BBC hasn't reported the Leave demos?

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 13:23

Did you learn nothing from the last Brexit thread you were on OP?

You made a decision, based on wanting to control immigration, despite not bothering to find out that they couldn’t because of the Irish border.

You’re now unhappy that the government (who laid out it was all unknown and didn’t have a plan along with all the other information pre referendum) don’t have a plan and won’t take any responsibility.

17.4 million people voted to leave, some did it for genuine reasons having done as much research as possible, some did it through stupidity and some did it through hatred.

It matters not one bit. We’re all fucked now. And you are part of it.

jugglingsatsumas · 11/05/2018 13:23

User - we could if we wanted to. In any case EU workers bring in far more money than they take out so what is the problem exactly?

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 13:25

But if you sign a contract that says nothing more than 'x will build a house' and x then builds a dolls house in timbuctoo, then you've no grounds to complain as x has delivered what you agreed

This sums it up for me.

user1486062886 · 11/05/2018 13:27

Peregrina So 0.006% of the people that want to remain, I hope you had a nice day,

OP posts:
user1486062886 · 11/05/2018 13:30

Smeddum Not you again, I have stayed off immigration and was just trying to gage fellow leavers on their opinions of staying in the Custom union, but as always I have been jumped on by remainers,

OP posts:
Smeddum · 11/05/2018 13:31

@user1486062886 maybe because you won’t admit you voted for one reason without doing and research and are now bleating that none of it is your fault.

Whose fault is it then? Because the government were open about the fact they had no idea what was coming and couldn’t foresee anything. So why are you surprised now?

user1486062886 · 11/05/2018 13:33

Smeddum So what is the answer ( Don’t just sat remain) there has to be found a solution that both sides can compromise on, As you say the longer this state of influx goes on it’s not helping us or the EU

OP posts:
Peregrina · 11/05/2018 13:35

Peregrina So 0.006% of the people that want to remain, I hope you had a nice day,

I did indeed. I first went on an anti-apartheid demo in the early 70s. Apartheid has now gone, although I don't doubt that there is still much to do to improve equality between races in South Africa.

I then went on anti-cruise missiles demos. They too have now gone, and I would like to believe that my actions, in their small way, helped to bring about the collapse of Communism.

Time will tell whether my latest protests have been successful or not. However, our one time Remain voting Tory MP bleated on and on about 'the will of the people' and nothing about how she was going to represent all her constituents including the 60% or so who voted Remain. She suddenly remembered she had voted Remain when the election was called. By then I had already decided that I was going to get active in politics and do my level best to get her voted out and replaced by an anti-Brexit candidate. We succeeded.

Democracy in action.

user1486062886 · 11/05/2018 13:35

Smeddum I can’t believe you are suggesting that the government don’t know what they are doing

OP posts:
Smeddum · 11/05/2018 13:37

@user1486062886 we can’t remain, much as I wish we could.
Honestly? We have to do as we’re told by the EU and hope they have mercy on us. Otherwise we’ll be in a complete mess.

Which is highly ironic tbh, but it’s the best option we have. Staying in a customs union makes economic sense, FOM makes economic sense, and leaving the GFA as it is makes all kinds of sense.

So basically we are at the mercy of the people that 17.4 million voters saw fit to stick two fingers up at.

Do I sound angry about that? Because I am.

LaurieMarlow · 11/05/2018 13:37

user as someone who voted remain, my answer is leave but stay in the customs union.

That respects the leave vote, creates no Irish border issues, is the least economically harmful.

If the leavers want something different it is UP TO THEM to work that out or pressurise the government to find a solution.

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 13:38

@user1486062886 isn’t that what your whole thread is about???? The government never pretended otherwise, this situation is unprecedented and nobody has a clue what to do or what comes next. I’m not entirely sure why this is a surprise?

user1486062886 · 11/05/2018 13:38

Peregrina The way she and the government are shaping up I don’t think you will have much trouble voting her out at the soon to be held GE

OP posts:
Peregrina · 11/05/2018 13:39

was just trying to gage fellow leavers on their opinions of staying in the Custom union, but as always I have been jumped on by remainers,

What is stopping Leavers from posting then? Although 'we are leaving, end of' doesn't actually throw any light on what leavers think about the Customs Union. Presumably Farage is agin it, because he extolled the Norway option and they are not in the Customs Union. But then, Norway and Sweden don't have to worry about a certain amount of friction on their border because they haven't recently fought any wars with each other. Nor are there any wars going on with minorities in their countries that I know of.

bearbehind · 11/05/2018 13:40

at the soon to be held GE

Where do you get your information from? Hmm

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 13:41

2022 isn’t “soon to be held”. It’s 4 years away! You know, 5 years after the last one.

user1486062886 · 11/05/2018 13:41

Smeddum The thread was originally about what do fellow leavers feel about staying in the Custom union, that’s all , just trying to gage opinions

OP posts:
Smeddum · 11/05/2018 13:42

@user1486062886 and you’re getting them, so what’s your problem?

user1486062886 · 11/05/2018 13:42

Smeddum You honestly think TM and the cons can hold on that long ?

OP posts:
Peregrina · 11/05/2018 13:42

We don't know when the next election will be held although the Fixed Term Parliament Act does make it less likely that there will be any snap elections.

jugglingsatsumas · 11/05/2018 13:44

I would rather we stay as we are, rather than being in the CU, it makes little sense,
Well at least we agree on something!

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 13:44

@user1486062886 I don’t know. I’m hopeful that Scotland won’t be part of the U.K. by then blatant wishful thinking but I don’t know.
Who is going to stop them? Given the shitshow that is Labour at the moment?

twofingerstoEverything · 11/05/2018 13:49

was just trying to gage fellow leavers on their opinions of staying in the Custom union, but as always I have been jumped on by remainers,

Well, as you are discovering, leavers have a tendency to come onto EU threads, have a whinge/throw around some insults (like Heyduggeesflipflop), but not actually add anything concrete to the debate. It would have been interesting if that poster had actually answered your question and engaged in the argument, but - again - we are just left to infer that they have nothing to say beyond the usual vacuous insults.
