@Mummy2017, what's the total annual cost to the UK economy caused by this all-important issue, given that the entire fishing industry contributes around 0.5% from what I've read.

lonelyplanetmum · 22/03/2018 17:35

0.05%

bearbehind · 22/03/2018 17:57

This made me chuckle

If we don’t get a deal on tariffs for importing passports, all our passports will be left in a warehouse in France, and we won’t be able to go and get them because we haven’t got a passport.

mummmy2017 · 22/03/2018 17:58

It not about the cost. It's about sustainable fishing..
If you fish until some thing is gone you can't replace its and the waste of food your saying we will be short of.

OliviaD68 · 22/03/2018 18:03

Yes mummmy. Fishing quotas are set by the EU to protect fishing stocks.

Tell me. Do you ever look into subjects?

LondonMum8 · 22/03/2018 18:04

BTW I remember having a fairly costly electric item nicked in the supermarket. This guy came over while I was busy bagging stuff and started talking about some BS, gesticulating. He pointed away from the bags, used the distraction to nick the item, then hurried away. When I realised what happened it was too late. Remember feeling anger of course but also a bit of shame. How could I have allowed myself to get taken so easily?

I imagine at least some of the smarter Leave voters must be feeling the same way once they've realised they have been targeted by Leave.EU spivs. I would offer the following consolation:

  1. As is apparent you have been up against a gigantic professional con machinery, not really a fair game
  2. The spivs should be still around (not sure about Farage who tends to avoid the UK) and it's not too late to make things right and punish them down the line
bearbehind · 22/03/2018 18:05

You beat me to it olivia

I was baffled by mummmys comment too.

LondonMum8 · 22/03/2018 18:09

@mummy2017
"It's about sustainable fishing.."

Yep, manage your trawling properly so you don't haul more in than you are allowed to bring back, and of course - as per the other comments above, the regulations are there to prevent overfishing!

OliviaD68 · 22/03/2018 18:14

@bearbehind

Evil EU protecting fishing stocks thru quota allocations. Horrible.

Face in hands.

Forehead banging against table top.

Yikes!

mummmy2017 · 22/03/2018 18:32

One boat said they ditch 10% of their catch. Food they could sell. But EU rules so no. This fish is not going to live. Read up on it. I did.

Peregrina · 22/03/2018 18:33

Yep, someone who voted Leave is now complaining that her EU dentist is upping sticks and going. That's what you voted for!

Doubletrouble99 · 22/03/2018 18:35

When you fish you might be fishing for say cod, but your nets will have other species in them too. But because you are not 'fishing' for that species you have to throw them back dead which is a waste. They could be sold and eaten. That I think is the point Mummy was trying to make.

bearbehind · 22/03/2018 18:35

mummmy are you being deliberately obtuse here?

They are not allowed to fish for whatever they like because of quotas.

Yes, there is an element of waste but the alternative is fishing our seas until they're empty if there's no restrictions.

In the example you quoted, they'd keep that 10% plus pillage the seas for much more.

mummmy2017 · 22/03/2018 18:39

No it's not the sensible thing to do is to tell fisherman to catch and log what they do catch. Still quotas b

bearbehind · 22/03/2018 18:40

Why are you all so bothered about fishing when, as a country we are far more reliant on financial services and industries that require frictionless trade like the car production industry?

Even if we got our hearts desire wrt fishing, how will that actually help the bigger picture?

Do Leavers have any sense of priority?

Those round here seem more than happy a UK company has lost the right to produce British passports but are up in arms about fishermen.

OliviaD68 · 22/03/2018 18:41

@bearbehind

Exactly.

Whoops!! 50% of our catch today was in illegal species. Sorry we tried. But can we sell them now? They're all dead. Surely that's ok?

Then tomorrow. Sorry again. Another 50% of our catch is illegal. But they're dead. So can I sell them now??

Face in hands ... unbelievable.

OliviaD68 · 22/03/2018 18:42

Log what they catch ...

Because no one would cheat.

Right ....

Remember mummmy thinks NI can be resolved with an honesty border, so fisherman simply logging what they catch fits that ideological nonsense.

bearbehind · 22/03/2018 18:46

gardengeek, that's more ideological nonsense. The seas would be raped for a quick buck for those in the trade now.

mummmy2017 · 22/03/2018 18:53

One boat catches a tonne of cod and a tonne of haddock and the same the next day... four tonnes caught and sold in my world..
You want the tone of haddock that is DEAD dumpped back in the sea and the boat comes home...
It reappear this for the next four days to catch four tonnes of cod... four tonnes of dead haddock is now in the sea ..... talk about waste of food . Fuel and man power

But hey that's the EU for you and rules are rules after all

mummy as ever it's totally pointless arguing with your completely ridiculous logic.

I'll just reiterate the fact these rules aren't going to be changing, however much you want them to.

LondonMum8 · 22/03/2018 18:56

Again, how prevalent is this issue. Any references?
