Westministenders: One for the Women

Just remember that women are more likely to be worried about Brexit.

Their women's and workers rights are more at risk from departure from the EU, the ECJ and potentially the EHCR.
They are more likely to be worried as EU citizens in the UK due to taking time to have and raise families.
They are more likely to have been badly affected by austerity and an economic downturn will hit them first.
If they are leavers they are more likely to have changed their minds.
They are less likely to be MPs so have less representation.
They are more likely to be feeling politically unrepresented by any party and unsure of who they will vote for at the next election.
They are more likely to get abuse for expressing a political opinion. Many report having been subjected to sexual harassment from political colleagues.
They are more likely to be the target of abuse on social media.
They are earn less than their political colleagues, they earn less than their media colleagues, they earn less than their business colleagues. They are less likely to be in powerful lobby groups.

Then there's #metoo

And to cap it off women's groups are finding it hard to get their voice heard, and are frequently being labelled as hysterical or bigoted for merely wanting to discuss things and be reassured that their fears are acknowledged. They are frequently dismissed as liars or over sensitive.

This is 2018.

It doesn't feel progressive. It doesn't look equal.

Brexit has more of an impact on women.

WMD Not sure what SMD is Hmm

Well Trump likes to be the boss and his secretary of state jumping in and giving Americas support to us really didn't go down well. Some reports on ' beyond 100 days' said that Trump had decided to sack him anyway because they argued about Iran and North Korea. But poor Tillerson is not on twitter and one of his aides had to ring him and tell him he'd been sacked.
Its that offhand remark ' if its proved its the Russians .....by Trump that is niggling me, the way he said it.

The Lords is being flooded with more Tory/Brexit peers next week, according to Jeffrey Archer who was told at Lord Fowler’s 80th birthday party! Gear up for big political row. Tories already have far more peers than their position in the Commons justifies!

What does this mean? Anyone?

Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 20:39

Nothing new in that austerity continues ( sigh). In April my dds working tax credit will stop. That money was used to feed them. And they say it pays to work?

woman11017 · 13/03/2018 20:43

we have to keep an eye on the Uk govt too
The loss of free school meals is simply dangerous to many children's health. Cruel too, obviously.

Anyone else have the suspicion we've just been used as a stage prop in putin's election campaign?

I'm going to keep my eyes on the prize: remain. freedom of speech. democracy. égalité

A bit of light relief/hope maybe - Bercow has a bollocks to Brexit sticker on his car

blogs.spectator.co.uk/2018/03/bercows-bollocks-to-brexit-sticker-is-a-disgrace/

lalalonglegs · 13/03/2018 20:49

I don't see how the HoL can be suddenly flooded with Tory peers - don't peers have to be appointed by the Queen in NY and birthday honours list? It doesn't seem plausible that they could just be slipped through without anyone noticing - but Adonis tends to know what he's talking about Confused.

lalalonglegs · 13/03/2018 20:50

Just thought, the Queen can also appoint peers as a goodbye present if the PM resigns...

Big Choc, why is he sacking his secretary of state AND his deputy?

JUST IN: Under Secretary of State Steve Goldstein is being fired for contradicting the account of Rex Tillerson’s dismissal, White House official tells @PeterAlexander

Something is up. Not in a good way.

Mueller being fired next?

@lalalonglegs

I agree. Why I was asking. I had heard May was going to get it done but I don't understand the process or the consequences.

@RedToothBrush

And the House Intelligence Committee has just announced it has stopped investigating Trump and Russia ...

Could just be dotard spasms.

The narrative of Trump unglued is not totally wrong but misses the reason why - he was terrified of the job the first six months, and now feels like he has a command of it.
So now he is basically saying “I’ve got this, I can make the changes I want.”
This is not to say his perception of self/confidence is in line with others’ perceptions of him. But it is part of why he is less able to be swayed.
Meanwhile, the campaign continues to be the truer, purer version of Trumpland, where people who couldn’t clear the normal government systems but who he wants around go.

And

Andrea Mitchell
‏*@mitchellreports*
.@costareports: I'm hearing the POTUS is looking at this moment as a return to Trump being Trump...he wants to surround himself with people who understand his campaign mentality. A turning point was that weekend rally in Pennsylvania. He doesn't want constraints. #AMR

BigChoc I think the under-secretary of state (in the US) was also sacked, possibly because he contraidcted the official line on the appointment of a new secretary of state. Shock

The idea of approaching the Hague is interesting. My money is on that not happening, owing to pretty much everyone wanting this to disappear. Sad

Yes (with regard to poverty). I think the figures for our borough alone are that some 6,000 children are losing their eligibility for free school meals (which in turn means losing a whole load of other benefits which FSM are a passport to). That's a truly terrible thing. It's going to have a really awful impact on a lot of children and families.

Sos How come? Is it your gdg's age or is it a move to Universal Credit? Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2018 21:05

red Trump seems to be sacking anyone who speaks without permission

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/mar/13/rex-tillerson-fired-donald-trump

Under-secretary of state Steve Goldstein said:
“The secretary did not speak to the president and is unaware of the reason, but he is grateful for the opportunity to serve, and still believes strongly that public service is a noble calling.”

< very innocuous face-saving and quite usual >

Goldstein was later fired, the state department said Hmm

< for trying to rescue some dignity for his former boss ? Trump wanted to make it a humiliation for Tillerson >

More changes expected include a McMaster departure soon, as NBC recently reported. Among replacements, Tillerson had expressed concerns about working with Bolton.

[there have been rumours of Bolton replacing McMaster since last week. Maggie Haberman's tweet was from this evening]

Background on Bolton:

www.vox.com/world/2018/3/12/17091772/john-bolton-trump-national-security-adviser-war-iran-north-korea

John Bolton, former ambassador to the United Nations in the Bush administration, is one of the most radically hawkish voices in the American foreign policy conversation. He has said the United States should declare war on both North Korea and Iran. He was credibly accused of manipulating US intelligence on weapons of mass destruction prior to the Iraq war and of abusive treatment of his subordinates. He once “joked” about knocking 10 stories off the UN building in New York

Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 21:15

As far as I know cat she got a letter a few months ago saying working tax credit stopping for everyone who earns over £3000 per annum. Now I may be wrong but I did see the letter.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 13/03/2018 21:17

I think Sessions might be fired instead of Mueller, or possibly Rosenstein. If Trump replaces the Attorney General who is recused from overseeing Mueller, or his deputy who has the responsibility of authorising Mueller's investigation, with a loyalist, the loyalist will be able to restrain Mueller's investigation in a similar way that the HIC was constrained without Trump having to actually get rid of him.

Though whether Trump is able to contain himself and choose the craftiest option and not just the feel-good impulsive one remains to be seen, particularly given his track record.

RedToothBrush · 13/03/2018 21:21

Oh so nothing to worry about then...

I think Trump doesn't care anymore.

How is anyone actually going to stop him, if he fires people now?

OP posts:
Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 21:22

cat just rang dd she will lose it when she claims universal credit. Its being rolled out throughout our area and if her circumstances change then she has to go on universal credit where she will lose the amount of working tax credit she gets now.

thecatfromjapan · 13/03/2018 21:24

Oh, that's terrible, Sos. Sad I don't know very much about current benefit legilsation/entitlements, so can't offer any advice. My current understanding is that there isn't any bridge benefit anyway (the whole point of getting rid of WTC). Have you tried posting elsewhere for advice on her behalf?

thecatfromjapan · 13/03/2018 21:26

The firing people by tweet, which seems to have been today's 'thing', is quite extraordinary.

It really is amazing how much we've become completely inured to.

A US President who fires people via twitter. Who'd have imagined that 3 years ago?

Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 21:30

Dd is going to go to citizens advice when she gets a day off ( and if she can get an appointment) cat

thecatfromjapan · 13/03/2018 21:34

@Sos It really might be worth finding a board on MN you can post on. There are some really knowledgeable posters on here. However, you really need to be careful about where you post. There are also some serious, horrible knob-heads and you can end up having to wade through a river of goady vitriol to get to useful information. Sad
