Westministenders: One for the Women

Just remember that women are more likely to be worried about Brexit.

Their women's and workers rights are more at risk from departure from the EU, the ECJ and potentially the EHCR.
They are more likely to be worried as EU citizens in the UK due to taking time to have and raise families.
They are more likely to have been badly affected by austerity and an economic downturn will hit them first.
If they are leavers they are more likely to have changed their minds.
They are less likely to be MPs so have less representation.
They are more likely to be feeling politically unrepresented by any party and unsure of who they will vote for at the next election.
They are more likely to get abuse for expressing a political opinion. Many report having been subjected to sexual harassment from political colleagues.
They are more likely to be the target of abuse on social media.
They are earn less than their political colleagues, they earn less than their media colleagues, they earn less than their business colleagues. They are less likely to be in powerful lobby groups.

Then there's #metoo

And to cap it off women's groups are finding it hard to get their voice heard, and are frequently being labelled as hysterical or bigoted for merely wanting to discuss things and be reassured that their fears are acknowledged. They are frequently dismissed as liars or over sensitive.

This is 2018.

It doesn't feel progressive. It doesn't look equal.

Brexit has more of an impact on women.

The Netherlands is HQ mad. Great for status, lots of jobs (from management to office cleaners) so companies can expect lots of support. There are severe housing and education shortages in Amsterdam so it will be interesting to see how grumpy residents vote in the local elections next week.

Exactly what planet is Hammond on? Not mine me thinks.

Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 12:42

Instead of digging at opposition he should be getting real about brexit. Oh by 2019 we will have a little surplus... We will blooming well need it! Light at the end of the tunnel pfft! The financial collapse of 10 years ago was a global oneHmm

Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 12:42

Still austerity then.

Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 12:44

Let's see how the EU members in NATO support us if article 5 is called. Trump still very quiet about attack in Salisbury ( maybe they did it).

Talkstotrees · 13/03/2018 12:50

I still read the Corbyn’s words as being reasonable. It seems to me sensible to raise the Russian funding issue when the stark relevance is in full view. But I appreciate that I wasn’t there and didn’t watch so I couldn’t gauge the feeling in the room. I am very pleased to be wrong - particularly if it means Corbyn is weakened and Labour has a change of direction. I can’t vote for them while he is there.

Talkstotrees · 13/03/2018 12:54

Rex Tillerson speaks out for UK agains Russia...

Then he’s sacked.

Wow.

Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 12:55

When was that talk?

thecatfromjapan · 13/03/2018 12:56

So, Rex Tillerson, Secretary of State, made a statement (today) voicing commitment to UK and May with regard to Russian attach. IT would appear, at least from my Twitter timeline, that Trump is sacking Tillerson.

Is anyone else on this thread more clued up about this than me? Confused

It seems to augur ill for post-Brexit 'special relationships 'n' all. And it is weird.

I think I may have to pop over to the Trump thread. It all seems quite confused and weird.

And I'm sorry for no link but this does seem to be what Laura Kuenssberg's tweets are suggesting. Hmm

Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 12:57

Think Hammond has entirely forgotten brexit. Its as if it doesn't exist. I'm all for optimism but........

thecatfromjapan · 13/03/2018 12:58

Yes, talk, that's what I'm seeing too. Shock

Sos Bizarrely, it all seems to be happening on Twitter. It appears Trump ^has sacked Tillerson on Twitter*.

I don't follow Trump, and it's all coming through on my Twitter feed in a very piecemeal way - hence my coming on here to ask.

Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 12:59

I am beginning to actually worry about Trumps silence. Yes its on the news now about Rex Tillerson!

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 13/03/2018 12:59

The news agencies seem to be reporting it on twitter, not just randoms.

But it's ok because he's just appointed the first female cia director (or something). 🤦

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 13/03/2018 13:00

From Wapo

“Trump last Friday asked Tillerson to step aside, and the embattled top diplomat cut short his trip to Africa on Monday to return to Washington

Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 13:00

They just interrupted Donaldsons reply to Hammond's speech.

Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 13:01

Waves to catSmile

JWIM · 13/03/2018 13:01

BBC just confirmed Tillerson out - breaking news.

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 13/03/2018 13:04

I was almost willing to give trump some of the benefit of the doubt regarding the lack of coming out against Russia, assuming it was more like those everyday folk who leap on Isis stuff but not Russia being more down to the fact that Russians tend to come in paler varieties. But then, given this maybe it's a bit more than just bog standard racism.

The new CIA Director: “As a clandestine officer at the [CIA] in 2002, Gina Haspel oversaw the torture of two terrorism suspects and later took part in an order to destroy videotapes documenting their brutal interrogations at a secret prison in Thailand.”

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 13/03/2018 13:16

No benefit of the doubt needed for Trump re:Russia. He has been explicit about soliciting their help and his actions (not enforcing sanctions, having his campaign reach out to Russia, having business ties with VEB Bank which is essentially Putin's bank, his obstruction of justice in trying to fire Sessions, firing Comey, Yates, Bharara, McCabe and so much more) put him well past any grey areas.

Sostenueto · 13/03/2018 13:17

Omg pain! Shock
I'm beginning to get a bit frightened of what America seems to be turning into under Trump.
McDonnell reply very good.

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 13/03/2018 13:23

Tbf pain, I'm pretty sure the skin tone thing is a factor with trump too. He has form on that front as well. Not that anyone here really needs pointing that out of course!

Yes, that's true - he is silent on white supremacists acting in the US and prefers him immigrants to be more Norweigan. But he has a long record of not condemning Russia when they do threatening things:

  • didn't say anything when Russia made a video showing nuclear missiles pointing at Florida
  • didn't say anything about Russia expelling American diplomats
  • has said he believes Putin when he says he didn't interfere in the elections...over all the American intelligence communities

There are so many instances that that's the pattern I think this fits into, though you are right that he is a racist as well. I just think his loyalty to Russia trumps anything else.
