Westministenders: Money, money, money

The big developments are that the government have signalled they are prepared to pay more and to involve the ECJ when it comes to citizens rights on condition that we move to talk of trade. But no apparent progress on NI. Which is significant with Ireland threatening to veto.

The EU has not changed its stance at all. Since Day 1.

There is always a worrying omission and lack of commitment to retain the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The bonfire begins.

Talk is of Green still going in a reshuffle, possibly with Gove replacing him as Deputy PM.

Coalition talks in Germany have broken down, and the British have got excited about it, whilst the German response have largely been a slight shrug.

Its been a much quieter week, despite the budget. Thank goodness. There are lots of outstanding issues that are lurking in the background like the Green one though.

The main message coming from the budget, has not been any new policy, but the dreadful economic forecast for the next few years.

@SiobhanFenton

Brexit minister Robin Walker has told MPs there still has not been any Northern Ireland specific impact assessments produced by his department

Well, well. Who is surprised?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 29/11/2017 11:06

T'was only in June that the esteemed BoJo told them they could whistle for their money. What a difference 5 months make

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson says he hopes the UK's offer at next month's EU Council will guarantee sufficient progress to move on to the next phase of Brexit talks

RhiannonOHara · 29/11/2017 11:10

Indeed, Pain. And someone said that we wouldn't need to give the EU a penny, didn't they? Can't remember which of the shower it was now.

lalalonglegs · 29/11/2017 11:13

This endless focusing on the financial settlement is yet another example of the Tories setting up the EU to fail. "See how reasonable we've been and still they insist on endlessly discussing side issues like the Irish border and EU citizens' rights. They just won't be sensible." I sincerely hope that Ireland will use its veto (if it has to, I'd prefer for Barnier to tell DD to do one).

lalalonglegs · 29/11/2017 11:15

Rhiannon I'm pretty sure it was all of them at one point or another, you know, German cars, French cheese, Prosecco, they need us more than we need them blah blah blah Hmm. Almost funny really.

RhiannonOHara · 29/11/2017 11:17

Yes, true, lala, but I do have a dim memory of some twat one saying specifically that we wouldn't need to pay anything.

AgnesSkinner · 29/11/2017 11:26

IDS (yeah, I know) just saying on the BBC that the divorce settlement would be dependent on getting a favourable FTA, otherwise his view is that the Tories will walk away from negotiations.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 29/11/2017 11:31

Was it not Boris, telling them they'd have to go whistle for the money?

James O’Brien @mrjamesob**

We’re paying tens of billions of pounds to leave the world’s largest free trade area while surrendering all of our ability to define its rights & regulations.
All so that we can hopefully start negotiating an inferior arrangement with the world’s largest free trade area.

RhiannonOHara · 29/11/2017 11:35

Pain, how could one forget that particular high point in British political diplomacy? Grin

But no, while I do remember that, this was longer ago and I thought involved the phrase 'don't have to pay a penny' or similar.

Anyway, doesn't really matter except I always wonder with this kind of thing what the person concerned is thinking about their statement now.

howabout · 29/11/2017 11:40

Olivia as I understand it, the sticking point for "sufficient progress" is the veracity of the assurances given to date re the Border, rather than the content. The details on how to implement "no hard border" is of necessity tied up with the final trade deal.

woman11017 · 29/11/2017 11:41

we wouldn't need to pay anything

Daniel Hannan's pre referendum vision of brexit britain (June 2016):

The last thing most EU leaders wanted, once the shock had worn off, was a protracted argument with the United Kingdom which, on the day it left, became their single biggest market. Terms were agreed easily enough. Britain withdrew from the EU’s political structures and institutions, but kept its tariff-free arrangements in place. The rights of EU nationals living in the UK were confirmed, and various reciprocal deals on healthcare and the like remained. For the sake of administrative convenience, Brexit took effect formally on 1 July 2019, to coincide with the mandates of a new European Parliament and Commission.

Lico thanks for that article.

Another thing that's dangerous about labour's flaccid stance, is that the lovely 3m, Sinn Fein and Varadkar are being regarded as the bearers of the Remain flag.

In a civil war, one can't only, look for external solutions.

Jo Maugham's legal challenge can't work with a government which acts illegally.

woman11017 · 29/11/2017 11:43

Not saying that 3m and SF are 'external' Blush Just that they need and have, the backing of the EU26.

TheElementsSong · 29/11/2017 12:14

The EU "bill" thread on AIBU is a delightful smorgasbord of Brexiteer cliches.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 29/11/2017 12:16

Trump’s retweeted a Britain first meme Hmm

LurkingHusband · 29/11/2017 12:17

As a UK citizen, I'd back Ireland, so lock me up.

RhiannonOHara · 29/11/2017 12:18

I can't find it, Elements, is it near the top?

RhiannonOHara · 29/11/2017 12:27

Thanks! Have a virtual wet-wipe. Grin

Bearbehind · 29/11/2017 12:41

The details on how to implement "no hard border" is of necessity tied up with the final trade deal.

Only if because Leavers continue to operate under the illusion we can have a trading agreement which doesn’t require a border.

The sooner they accept this isn’t going to happen, the sooner things can progress.

RhiannonOHara · 29/11/2017 13:07

Bring on the announcement that we'll keep FOM! I'll get in popcorn for when the Daily Mail gets hold of that one.

lonelyplanetmum · 29/11/2017 13:08

* Trump’s retweeted a Britain first meme*

What has the world descended into. For a president of any country, let alone POTUS, to circulate racist, xenophobic propaganda from a small group of lunatics.

I keep thinking we need to hit rock bottom before some kind of Phoenix can arise from the ashes, but when are we going to hit the very bottom? Surely we are close now?
