Brexit

Where do you realistically think we go from here?

So Amber Rudd says 'no deal is unthinkable' and David Davis says the opposite.

DD also says we'd only agree to a transition period if the terms of our deal were known before hand.

The EU are still insisting the 3 priorities are addressed before talks can move to trade so basically we're at a stand off.

Something has to give at some point.

Regardless of what you want to happen, what do you think will actually happen.

I think we will walk away from the talks, all hell will break loose when the repercussions of that come to the fore and we'll end up staying in the EU in some capacity but in a much weaker position than before.

At the end of the day do you think most people will be happy with Brexit and glad we had the referendum? I don't, I think this will lead to resentment and division for decades especially given the age profiles of Leave/Remain voters. Our young who didn't vote for this and didn't want it are the ones who are going to have to live with this. Also, the most important issue for me, NI is once again largely ignored.

We get our country back next year.

You'd think there would be mounting excitement among the leavers for this momentous time...

That's more of the negative attitude corcory is talking about.
Try to delude yourself more please

Peregrina · 19/10/2017 08:27

I am intrigued that one reason for picking London over Dublin is because of the timezone.

sinceyouask · 19/10/2017 08:32

If the EU dont sign a deal its worse for these remaining member states than it is for the UK.
I don't think so.
I'm going to ignore this 'if you want it done right get a Brit to do it' bullshit because today's resolution is to try and be less rude to eejits on mumsnet. Also because there really is little point in discussing anything with the sort of person spouting such offensive and ridiculous shite.

lljkk · 19/10/2017 08:43

@Want2bsupermum doesn't understand British identity AT ALL.

I'm speaking as an American who has now lived in UK 25 yrs (& I have a British passport). I only qualify as British by the passport. Realistically, in no other way do I qualify yet.... or ever, as British. Even though I'm white FFS.

What makes you think there isn't?

Humpsfor20yards · 19/10/2017 08:58

I live in a majority leave area- no excitement here, lots of worry.

Are there parties/celebrations being planned elsewhere?

Perhaps our orchestras will put on concerts? Oh no, they're leaving.

How does that manifest exactly? I mean, are you talking to all your neighbours? Has there been a survey? How do you know what several thousand people are thinking?

fakenamefornow · 19/10/2017 09:03

What makes you think there isn't?

They've all gone very quiet.

Humpsfor20yards · 19/10/2017 09:03

Could you link to some celebration events, flowerpots? I'd love to go.

What does that mean? What are you looking to see or hear which would mean that you perceive the Leave campaigners are excited to be leaving?

If you want celebration events, I'm sure you could google it. Now, back to our discussion, could you answer my questions please?

Somerville · 19/10/2017 09:10

Somerville, that is the beauty of British culture. For centuries foreigners have come to the UK and settled. It was never an issue before because you had to be very wealthy/educated to move. Even today there is a different track for immigrants to the U.K. who are educated. You seem to be insinuating that this is race related. It's not. Being British is a mindset that goes far far deeper than skin color....We welcome those who come to the UK to join us and prosper.

You know very little about the country you purport to be from. There is not a binary "British or foreign" like you suggest. I'm Irish, from NI. My identity is not, and never will be, British and unless Michael Gove and the DUP manage to do away with the GFA, I have every right to live in UK and not be discriminated against anyway.

But when it comes to immigrants, what do you think about those who aren't educated, wealthy or who prosper when they 'join us'? Do tell...

Also, the productivity crisis they are reporting is because of the exchange rate. As things stabilize, which they are already starting to,

They picked London because of the time zone, the laws and more flights going there from other centers of business compared to Dublin.

Not very smart, your bosses, are they?

MichaelFabricantsHair · 19/10/2017 09:11

I also live in a majority Leave area; nobody seems to give two shits. I sometimes think there's only me, my mum and DH that discuss Brexit regularly.

Carolinesbeanies · 19/10/2017 09:12

"I'd love to have a more positive attitude, but I have seen nothing and heard nothing to be positive about"

Thats the problem of living in an echo chamber, and only seeking out confirmationary bias.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 19/10/2017 09:18

The Tories decided to share the division in their party with the rest of the country so until we get some decent honest leadership I have no idea where we can go from here.
And honest leadership doesn't include pretending the divisions aren't there or will go away if sound bites keep being regurgitated.
Brexit is also a distraction from what else is going on in the country. If the country was United it might have been a Falklands, in that it pulled the country together, despite what else is going on. But I think it was a complete miscalculation in many many ways.

Humpsfor20yards · 19/10/2017 09:19

I have googled it and the first thing I came up was from six months ago -
www.express.co.uk/news/uk/780209/Brexit-Theresa-May-celebrate-EU-independence-day

Its weird there's nothing since then. I would have expected there to be a lot more delighted noise as there was back last June.

Humpsfor20yards · 19/10/2017 09:20

So no mounting excitement then? No parties or celebration events? Maybe it's just flowerpot in her echo chamber?

Something you are more guilty of than most caroline

Interesting that you haven't commented on where we actually go from here.

Here's my questions again for you, third time lucky and all that:

How does that manifest exactly? I mean, are you talking to all your neighbours? Has there been a survey? How do you know what several thousand people are thinking?

NameChanger22 · 19/10/2017 09:35

The leavers I know won't discuss the referendum. None of them look particularly positive or happy, but then, they never did. It's their negativity that gave us the result we have now.

Humpsfor20yards · 19/10/2017 09:43

How does that manifest exactly?
By contrast to last June, the mood is very subdued among the leavers I know and indeed the once-euphoric leavers on MN.

I mean, are you talking to all your neighbours?
Er yes, I talk to my neighbours

Has there been a survey? There are many surveys that show Leavers changing their minds. Perhaps you could google them.

How do you know what several thousand people are thinking?
What can I say? I am on social media a lot. I predicted Brexit, I predicted May would be in trouble.

I said I haven't seen any mounting excitement about Brexit - I am quite prepared to be corrected on this. Maybe they are secretly excited and secretly planning celebrations.

It seems you feel that leavers are as jubilant as they were last June. That's interesting.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 19/10/2017 09:58

the mood is very subdued among the leavers I know and indeed the once-euphoric leavers on MN.

Wrt to Leavers on MN - as has been mentioned on numerous threads including the recent ‘where have the Brexiteers gone’ - they got fed up with the constant demands for Answers! And are pretty much fed up with continually re-hashing the referendum campaign & results. As well as obviously being fucked off with the never ending tedium of at least one poster on every thread inferring (or often explicitly stating) that Leave voters are racist/xenophobic/stupid/uneducated etc etc etc
