Brexit

Where do you realistically think we go from here?

So Amber Rudd says 'no deal is unthinkable' and David Davis says the opposite.

DD also says we'd only agree to a transition period if the terms of our deal were known before hand.

The EU are still insisting the 3 priorities are addressed before talks can move to trade so basically we're at a stand off.

Something has to give at some point.

Regardless of what you want to happen, what do you think will actually happen.

I think we will walk away from the talks, all hell will break loose when the repercussions of that come to the fore and we'll end up staying in the EU in some capacity but in a much weaker position than before.

I'd take Caroline's wager on the basis of terms laid out specifically in writing that are enforceable in both our countries. Over to you, Caroline.

BoboEK · 25/10/2017 11:13

Once the "Impact papers" are released I am %100 certain that the mood of the nation will change, A50 will be with drawn.

EmilyAlice · 25/10/2017 11:21

Yes I agree Mistigri but to be honest if people (pensioners or otherwise) have not been compliant with tax and residence rules then my sympathy is limited.

Yes I agree Mistigri but to be honest if people (pensioners or otherwise) have not been compliant with tax and residence rules then my sympathy is limited.

But that's the sort of I'm all right jack attitude that is likely to end up shafting tens of thousands of migrants who moved in good faith - both Britons and other UK citizens.

People's lives are complicated and people may inadvertently fall foul of residence criteria for reasons that are no fault of their own. I let out a house in France to retired British tenants one of whom fell seriously ill and was subsequently diagnosed with cancer during a family visit back to the UK. His partner and his life remain here, but he has been stuck in the UK for many months because his doctors will not permit him to travel. It's quite possible that he has been away long enough for him to fall foul of residence criteria.

Multiply this by at least 4 million and you are looking at, at minimum, tens of thousands of awkward cases.

Sorry, should read "both Britons and other EU citizens". Proof reading fail.

EmilyAlice · 25/10/2017 12:29

I would have every sympathy for people who fall foul of the rules because of an “accident de vie” and have supported quite a few of them. I was talking about people who deliberately chose to live below the radar, ignore the 180 day rule and avoid registering for tax and health cover.

It is la protection maladie universelle, which is basically the bit of the health insurance system for people who don't fit in anywhere else.

Carolinesbeanies · 25/10/2017 23:59

Excellent!

Fakenamefornow, "Sovereign states will need the EU permission to spend their own money? So governments would have to submit their budgets to the EU for approval, and the EU would have a veto?"

Thats about it, yep. So You and Misti would be interested, Bear would you be in?

"Would you care to share the evidence that this is the direction the EU is heading?"

Nope.

I fear there would be a tad of a legal problem, but its a really interesting wager, and I think I defo should ask William Hill if theyd stand such a bet. Coo, what a thought.

Bearbehind · 26/10/2017 06:22

Caroline why do all your answers have to be so sarcastic and big headed?

Stop twatting around talking about childish bets and tell us why you think the EU will have control of member states budgets in 5 years.

I know you like to give the illusion you're actually Theresa May but I doubt very much you are.

I can't exactly work out what Caroline is betting her house on. Is she saying that the EU will centralise to control membership budgets and if it does she retains her house? Or does she lose her house?

I don't myself think it will do that within five years - it might in another 30, possibly.

Bearbehind · 26/10/2017 07:13

The former peregrina. caroline thinks she has access to inside information which assures her the EU will control all member states budget in 5 years.

Do you think if the EU takes over our budget the funding crisis in the NHS and education will end? Grin

Peregrina · 26/10/2017 10:00

No, because they expect us to be out of the EU by then. That's a another particular annoyance about Brexit. if Gove, Johnson, Gisela Stuart et al. had taken the opportunity to say on the morning the results were announced that they would endeavour to see the NHS supported to its utmost, I might feel less angry. Instead, they whinged that they never said they would support the NHS, and that it was only an idea, and have stayed silent since. Gisela Stuart had the good fortune to be able to leave politics early because of the ill fated election, instead of serving her term and attempting to sort out the mess she had helped create.

No doubt Caroline will be along to say 'Oh that again about the NHS'

Can you imagine the economic boost there would be if we just abandoned Brexit? A huge collective sigh of relief.

woman11017 · 27/10/2017 17:04

Figmentofmyimagination I do wonder if incoming labour government, are building in cancellation of brexit to their economic planning. It'd pay for some lovely public services. Smile
