Westministenders: No Brexit is Better than a Bad Brexit

Happy Anniversary!!!

These Threads are officially 1 year old today.

I don't know who started the very first thread, but it was about how Cameron quitting had handed the Boris a poison chalice because he had to be the one to trigger a50 as Cameron walked away without having done it.

Of course Boris didn't become PM, and we found out that triggering a50 and Brexit were even more complex than even the majority of the most informed thought it would be.

A year on we have a minority government, a zombie prime minister, a government who don't really know what the concept of democracy, millions of EU citizens (who include British nationals) who face an uncertain future, the fear of the cliff edge, a huge scandal over inequality and Jeremy Corbyn appearing on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury within the hour.

Place marking

FidgetSpinner · 24/06/2017 16:45

Thanks for the new thread Cake
I remember being on the first post brexit thread and a poster posted that David Cameron resigned because he didn't want Brexit shit all over his hands and I have since regarded brexit as a big pile of shit!

BatSegundo · 24/06/2017 16:47

Her switching to whoever she thinks is winning would certainly fit in with the self-interested behaviour seen since she took power. Might also explain why they've all been in such a mess since the election; struggling with the dawning realisation that no-one can win this game.

Golondrina · 24/06/2017 16:49

Placemarking or even placemat king Wink

LurkingHusband · 24/06/2017 16:50

I really liked Hugh Dennis' gag on Mock the Week, that David Cameron is like the knob who brakes on a motorway, causing a pile-up behind him, gets home, turns on the news, hears about a massive tailback, and says "Wow, I just missed that".

(I also liked his Vince Cable gag:

^It's going to be ridiculous, Vince Cable is 74 now, so by the time of the next election he'll be ... 74 Smile)

Mrsmartell08 · 24/06/2017 16:55

LurkingHusband · 24/06/2017 17:01

a decent and reliable news source for him...

No such thing. You need a spread ...

Mrsmartell08 · 24/06/2017 17:02

A spread...ideas?

lonelyplanetmum · 24/06/2017 17:07

Yes thanks to Red and thread for making me feel I'm not the only lemming trying to run against the flow.

Yes predictions for 12 months time.....

My non sophisticated ones are:

Prime Minister- Hammond

Pound- $1.05

Exit agreement - No idea really.Possibly we have thrown money at the problem....so in addition to honouring existing commitments, we have to promise vastly greater sums than the existing 1.2 % of expenditure in return for some Norway type transitional agreement.

Environmental, agricultural, employment laws- mercifully incorporated in their entirety.

Immigration- EU will have fallen. Non EU has increased for example nurses from Phillipines etc.

????

BigChocFrenzy · 24/06/2017 17:15

Thanks, red and Happy Anniversary to all Westministenders !

BigChocFrenzy · 24/06/2017 17:20

lonely The UK's net contribution, after we receive money back, is 0.7% of UK GDP.

If there is a deal, I expect the UK will pay a lower figure than the 350 million gross, but won't receive any development grants back.
So, the net figure may not be much under the 0.7% GDP and if it is an EEA / EFTA deal with almost all the current benefits, then it may not drop at all.

RedPeppers · 24/06/2017 17:20

Mrs not sure it would be good enough but just looking at the news app on my iPad is actually giving me quite a lot of information.

Mrsmartell08 · 24/06/2017 17:24

I'm baffled really
Don't get print newspapers and havent.foe years

BigChocFrenzy · 24/06/2017 17:27

Even if an EEA / EFTA deal is agreed in time, the UK would still lose EU agencies based here, with their thousands of highly paid jobs,
e.g. the European Medicines Agency and the European Banking Authority.

Even if Brexit gets cancelled, it'll almost certainly be too late to retain them.

HarryBiscuit · 24/06/2017 17:28

Thanks Red

Peregrina · 24/06/2017 17:29

Far from David Davis resigning, I heard a prediction that he would be the next PM. Shudder.

Are the new Remain Tory MPs a product of the snap election i.e. the party had no time to replace Remainers and had to get someone in place PDQ?

BigChocFrenzy · 24/06/2017 17:37

Complexity of Trade Agreements

I've often read Brexiters posting that the US trades with the EU without FOM or ECJ.
Well, they do trade, but US regards the level of access as inadequate - hence the TTIP negotiations:

The USA has limited access to the Single Market in certain sectors
and little access as regards services — the most vital for the UK.

Even this limited access depends on 135 existing TAs (Trade Agreements) between the EU and the USA, such as Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) controlling certification of product standards

This illustrates the complexity of any post-brexit deal the UK would need and why such deals normally take 5-10 years to negotaiate.

Also, shows what we have lost wrt just one country:
those 135 TAs we will no longer have with the US.
To create new trading arrangements with the US we will depend on Trump's good will - if he hasn't got in a huff with us refusing his demands wrt say foreign wars - and if he doesn't win a 2nd term, that of his successor as POTUS.

We will have to create such arrangements with all our main trading partners outside the RU, not just with the E27

DividedKingdom · 24/06/2017 17:39

Mrsmartell08 Have you looked at Flipboard (RRS feeder) for a tablet? Your DC can simply define their theme title e.g. "Brexit Politics" and it produces a flippable and continously updated magazine on a mobile device, drawing from loads of different sources including all the major newspapers, with links through to the base articles/sites etc (you can define those too). It's pretty fantastic.

HashiAsLarry · 24/06/2017 17:41

Placemat king too

Though my phone wanted to make that placenta king Blush

Thanks red and happy anniversary to us. I wish it was in happier circumstances. I'll raise a glass to you all for teaching me so much later

BigChocFrenzy · 24/06/2017 17:43

Peregrina DD seems to be the fav, with Hammond #2 somewhere behind him atm

That link on the last thread to Marina Hyde reminded me of that horrible sight I had bleached from my brain, during the 2005 Tory leadership election in which he came 2nd to Cameron:

Young, pretty female supporters prancing around with "DD for me" on their T-shirts.
As if he were running for the leadership of a sleazy rugby supporters club - in the 1970s

AnnieKenney · 24/06/2017 17:43

Mrsmartell Your son may find it useful to sign up to mailing lists from All Party Parliamentary Groups on issues he is interested in. There's a list here I find them more thoughtful and more factual than most sources and meetings often include (ssshh) experts in their field.

MsHooliesCardigan · 24/06/2017 17:43

Red I have long argued that Mumsnet should have an annual awards ceremony. You would totally win the Politics award due to your extensive knowledge, your eloquent writing and your tenacity in keeping these threads going. I salute you Flowers

citroenpresse · 24/06/2017 17:44

Re the EMA, they are working on the assumption (as stated on their website) that the UK will become a 'third country' as of 30 March 2019 i.e. outside the European Union and European Economic Area. Announcement of the new location is expected in October 2017.
