Westministenders: No Brexit is Better than a Bad Brexit

Happy Anniversary!!!

These Threads are officially 1 year old today.

I don't know who started the very first thread, but it was about how Cameron quitting had handed the Boris a poison chalice because he had to be the one to trigger a50 as Cameron walked away without having done it.

Of course Boris didn't become PM, and we found out that triggering a50 and Brexit were even more complex than even the majority of the most informed thought it would be.

A year on we have a minority government, a zombie prime minister, a government who don't really know what the concept of democracy, millions of EU citizens (who include British nationals) who face an uncertain future, the fear of the cliff edge, a huge scandal over inequality and Jeremy Corbyn appearing on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury within the hour.

On Jeremy Corbyn at Glastonbury, I also feel slightly uneasy about it too. It's not that it's a politician speaking, Tony Benn used to give a speech at Glastonbury every year (I went to see him a few times). Many other left-leaning politicians and activists do too. I think it's the fact that JC is party leader, and it feels like he is being given a huge platform, so that maybe other parties should be given a platform too. Possibly it's because I don't like / trust him very much. But encouraging young people to take an interest in politics can only be a good thing at this stage!

Peregrina · 24/06/2017 20:35

Could you honestly see Theresa May wanting to take the stage at Glastonbury? Come on, she couldn't even meet groups of ordinary voters.

It is understood they are beginning a fact-finding process about border trade issues.

Loathsome: we really don't want her as PM

https://www.ft.com/content/5ec81170-4101-11e6-b22f-79eb4891c97d

Remember, she was Arron Banks' favoured candidate for PM last year.

Like May and Bojo, she has no principles other than what benefits her career:

Leadsom in 2013 said that leaving the EU would be “a disaster for our economy and would risk “a decade of economic and political uncertainty”.

Her one-year stint from 2014-15 at the Treasury as City minister was seen as “a disaster” by one official.
“She was the worst minister we’ve ever had.”

“She found it difficult to understand issues or take decisions,”
said another Treasury official.
“She was monomaniacal, seeing the EU as the source of every problem.
She alienated officials by continually complaining about poor drafting.”

Tories crack the whip as MPs ordered to cancel holiday on vote days

One of the predicted strains or a minority government. Boo fucking hoo.

Not a placemark at all Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 24/06/2017 21:12

I remember under the last hung parliament seeing one Tory MP, who'd been brought to the HoC despite undergoing cancer treatment - he looked pretty far gone
It explains why they want to assess cancer patients as fit for work, when they are so ruthless with their own people.

Sostenueto · 24/06/2017 21:12

Place marking while I return to old thread to catch up. See you all on next thread as no doubt this will be full by the time i catch upGrin

Hello.

Just found this thread and I see it's a year old. How did I miss it? Really interesting and informative. I was slightly interested in politics for a long time but the Scottish independence referendum followed by the EU ref got me very interested.

The only two good things I can see potentially coming out of brexit are

More people voting and becoming politically aware, although the endless speculation about the effects on technical and or complicated matters could eventually turn people off, I suppose.

Potential supporters of Scottish independence getting cold feet when they see the mess created when an electorate votes to make such a massive change.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/06/2017 21:31

Sheffield Flowers Dreadful that so many families, in 27 countries, are under stress like yours.

There are both Uk and E27 expats on these threads.
I live in Germany (no family) and I have far more trust that Merkel, Barnier, Verhofstadt and even Juncker would look after my rights than this Tory govt. Disgraceful spivs and swivel-eyed.

If you are a citizen of an E27 country, I'd assume your DH and DC would be allowed to live with you permanently in your home country, even if the UK becomes a "third country" post-Brexit.
Of course, language might be a barrier to his career there (if it's not RoI !)

He would be treated as any other non-EU spouse, hence under EU laws allowed to stay permanently.
Anyway, I hope Barnier forces the UK govt to agree all expats retain their current rights.

That's one of the existing rights that May wants to remove for E27 expats - the right to bring their non-EU spouse and kids permanently to the UK, which even UK citizens don't have !

If May is replaced as PM, I think the chances of a good deal for expats will shoot up:
she always wants to restrict rights even for the immigrants she considers "useful".
afaik, none of the likely replacements are so dogmatic about immigrants rights.

PattyPenguin · 24/06/2017 21:33

The British did used to do political rallies, though. Admittedly in the days before television and the internet.

Look at the pictures of Lloyd George addressing crowds, for instance.

MN tory voters JustAnotherPoster00 Grin very familiar

one Tory MP, who'd been brought to the HoC despite undergoing cancer treatment - he looked pretty far gone
Sadly, thin majorities caused death. MP Joe Harper had to delay surgery to get to vote.

Sick and dying MPs were housed in Commons offices. The dreadful DLA assessments and conscious cruelty of tory policies don't make this type of cruelty any less awful.

We were a bit busy yesterday, so I couldn't post. We have celebrated "Independence day" with gettin DS's Schengen passport in the post. Yay! Now DH has to pull his fingers out and apply for one.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 24/06/2017 22:03

I'm envious of anyone who has a potential out of the Brexit mess by being able to move elsewhere. I'm pretty sure I can no longer get a passport based on my mum's nationality as I've been in the uk too long. Sad

QuentinSummers · 24/06/2017 22:07

Hi!
Been all the way back and found the very first thread in a fit of nostalgia (I was one of the first posters, NCd since then)
Going to go have a read and see how things have panned out

sodablackcurrant · 24/06/2017 22:09

I wouldn't worry too much (easy for me to say being eligible for an Irish passport), but the issue of immigrants and ex pats is very important to the EU as part of the negotiations.

May's five year option is just an opening gambit. The EU are quite happy for British expats to continue to have exactly the same rights within the EU as they have had all along. So in the end TM will have to match that.

Such is my view anyway.

RedToothBrush · 24/06/2017 22:20

This is quite something:

Paul Brand‏*@PaulBrandITV*

BREAKING: Government confirms that EVERY SINGLE SAMPLE of cladding tested so far across England has FAILED fire safety tests. Astonishing.
To explain, they do test the most worrying cases first, using a set of criteria. So that may explain high failure rate so far.
But by deduction, we also know that only 34 samples out of 600+ have so far been tested by the specialist lab. A long long way to go.
This is key part of Sajid Javid's statement tonight. Some councils still be hurried along to submit samples after ALL of them failed so far.

sodablackcurrant · 24/06/2017 22:25

I am guessing that it is not just high rise social housing that has dodgy cladding either. Schools, hospitals and public buildings etc.

RedToothBrush · 24/06/2017 22:31

Well they have said that they have tested the ones they are ones they are most worried about so that might be the issue. The ones they are suspicious about they have confirmed the suspicion about (you also have to ask the question about how they are being able to pick the ones that they are worried about with a 100% hit rate though. That might betray a suspicion about a supplier or an admission that certain councils were cutting costs and they knew it. Or there is a massive problem across the entire sector in social housing. Or the entire industry...).

But yeah, schools, hospitals, public buildings, hotels, privately owned housing....

... could be an awful lot of buildings many of which will not have sprinklers.

This could turn into a full on civil crisis across the country at this rate. If its on this scale, then there is no way people can be put up in emergency accommodation.
