Tomorrow is the Queen’s Speech. In honour of that the start of this thread is written in its honour:

Hammond is going all out for leadership, after being held back from contributing anything on the economy during the election campaign by May's Dementors. And well he I might, I hope he gets it. But I don't think he will I think the Brexit loons will choose Davis as a safe pair of hands on the Brexit timebomb.

RedToothBrush · 20/06/2017 22:28

Its fine Sos.

You joined us on election night didn't you, when we were in the active threads over night?

Re the pound: Yes I do believe it was over valued. But the decline in it has been too much.

Re being the biggest contributor to the EU. We also were one of the net takers (as in we got more out than we put in). So in relative terms the EU is actually financially better off without us in some ways.

It reduces the EU's power somewhat, but it still remains more powerful than the UK alone. The UK's influence becomes diminished if we leave as we no longer have a veto in European decisions.

Personally I think both EU campaigns failed to really address key questions about the EU about what the advantages and disadvantages of being in the union were. Which is quite an achievement given what the referendum was about. Remain was an 'on balance' argument which was difficult to sell, but Leave was outright lies. It doesn't surprise me people felt bewildered and unmotivated to vote.

But we are where we are, and I'd rather people learnt about politics and how it is communicated and were interested in politics rather than feeling they need to apologise for not voting.

The failure of people to vote is a failure of political parties to engage people and make them realise its an important thing that does make a difference.

Chris Grayling congratulates uk Brexit negotiators getting status of eu nationals to top of agenda. But was top of eu agenda too! So not hard

Is this how the whole of the negotiations are going to go?

OP posts:
HashiAsLarry · 20/06/2017 22:47

Maybe Grayling assumes we can't read

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 22:52

Thank you Red for your reassurances it took a lot for me to admit I did not vote. I could not decide the future for the country in a balanced way. It would have been so easy for me to vote leave given my position in life but I felt that would be a selfish reason. With these threads since election night that you have set up Red my education begun in earnest as regards politics. I am so grateful you have allowed me to participate in debates with you all it has been a pleasure, even though I goof things up a bit! I am, however, a socialist And that will never change, but you can all try, I will love the Bantor! Peace to all lovely people Flowers

I go on a train for four hours and there's five pages of a new thread.

Rookie MN question. Is there a way to jump to the last post you read on a thread (as opposed to the last post that you wrote)?

Exclusive: Sir Vince Cable 'to step down in three years' to let Jo Swinson become Liberal Democrat leader

Sir Vince Cable has agreed to step down as Liberal Democrat leader after three years to let Jo Swinson take over if he wins the leadership, The Telegraph can disclose.

The party is facing its second hunt for a new leader in two years following the resignation of Tim Farron over the conflict between his faith and political career.

Ms Swinson, a newly elected MP and former minister, is understood to have hammered out the deal with Sir Vince at the end of last week in the days after Mr Farron resigned, party sources told The Telegraph.

One source said Sir Vince had agreed to quit after after two or three years if he is made leader: “Vince has the most experience and is what the party needs in the next couple of years. Everyone thinks that. But the future is Jo Swinson.”

But will anyone stand against Vince is the real question.

"The latest is the following article headlined 'Are these the best politicians that the UK has to offer?', by the Süddeutsche Zeitung's London correspondent Christian Zaschke. It has been suggested and translated by Paula Kirby"

Pretty concerning.

Some ideas for the thread oath:

Cynicism is healthy
Scrutiny is our duty
Persist!

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 21/06/2017 06:22

Or perhaps "We will persist"

@jjenkinssjb
At this point it does very much feel like the UK's strategy on Brexit is being managed by General Meltchett from Blackadder Goes Forth.

Artisanjam · 21/06/2017 06:58

Thank you Red. I can't believe that a year on we still no plan - probably less of one as those bastards at the EU ruled out our cake and eat it proposals.

To me the incompetence and dishonesty since the referendum is utterly unforgivable.
