He wants out if he wants nationalisation of railways etc because its not allowed under EU laws

French and German railways are nationalised so I think its permissable

ElenaGreco123 · 20/06/2017 20:56

Thanks for the early access to the QS Red Grin

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 21:00

PattyPenguin · 20/06/2017 21:04

Regarding renationalisation of UK railways and EU law... Yes, France and Germany have nationalised rail companies which already existed - they didn't need to be renationalised (though there are other companies as competition is required under EU law).

The Conversation has an article on this. theconversation.com/fact-check-do-new-eu-rules-make-it-impossible-to-renationalise-railways-61180 It claims that renationalisation in the UK shouldn't be more or less difficult under EU law.

The problem for Lexiters is that competition and tenders would still be required, as above - there couldn't be a UK-wide monopoly like British Rail.

I think that where there's a will there's a way. Labour are going to wait for the current agreements to run their course, then nationalise. All the transport unions would be on side, and a fair number of commuters and train users.

How lovely it would be to have a clean, safe, cheap and accessible public transport system.

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 21:11

Well that's cleared up then pattypenquin. That's why Corbyn sticking to leaving the EU maybe.

BestIsWest · 20/06/2017 21:13

Placemarking.

Had a quick count up and I make this roughly thread no 54 Shock

woman12345 · 20/06/2017 21:13

^This article in a Swiss newspaper today is so ruthlessly clear-sighted in its assessment of just how screwed we are that I just had to translate it for the non-German speakers. Hold on to your hats:

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 21:19

Yea well they can laugh if they like. The EU not doing that great as far as growth etc goes. And wasn't the Euro a bit all over the place a while ago? Without Germany and pacifically Merkel EU wouldn't be so blooming hot anyway! Pfffft!

Mrsmartell08 · 20/06/2017 21:20

Thanks for the link to that article

Sobering

And spot on

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 21:21

EU better hope Merkel gets in in September or whenever German elections are!

Mrsmartell08 · 20/06/2017 21:22

Not sure where you get your stars from sos...
England worst performing economy in the west
The pound plummeting
Inflation rising
All since 2016

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 21:23

Mrsmartell08 · 20/06/2017 21:23

Of course she will
Europe is looking toward us with horrified eyes...

HesterThrale · 20/06/2017 21:24

Wow! 54 threads! That's over one a week.
Thanks Red for keeping it going, and everyone for such illuminating posts. I've learnt a lot.

I'll be feeling a bit sad on Friday, thinking about the damage that's been done in the last year. Anyone else?
But I'm trying to be positive that some good will come out of it eventually. (E.g: I feel as though lately I've seen slightly less of Farage and Nuttalls of the UKIPs.)

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 21:24

Figured MrsMartell...its called a Tory Government.

Mrsmartell08 · 20/06/2017 21:26

So hardly the fault of the EU?...

PattyPenguin · 20/06/2017 21:27

woman if we were still in the EU we couldn't just renationalise the railways and not have tenders / competition - there are EU directives on this.

As indeed there are in other areas of public procurement.

If I've been reading the EFTA website correctly, the same thing would be true if the UK were in the EEA but not the EU.

RedToothBrush · 20/06/2017 21:27

I really don't think Johnson will get the leadership. Watch the Boris v Theresa thing. He got royally stabbed in the back not just by Gove. Tory MPs just don't see him as leadership material.

He who laughs last laughs the longest I say. We were being laughed at when Cameron was PM. Oh karma was never better when his plan backfired on him. Unfortunately it has ruined the country. But Kit Harrington will come save us all screaming 'you know nothing EU nothing!'

NancyWake · 20/06/2017 21:33

Really interesting comment from a German under an FT DAG article on the u-turn over Brexit negotiation timetable:

No offense to UK readers, but I wonder whether this apparent lack of method and preparation is a British thing. This has struck me in many business meetings and negotiations: UK parties often have a tendency to engage in unstructured discussions (in which they are usually very elegant debaters) at the expense of thorough preparation. It has been explained to me by various business coaches that for Britons a meeting starts real work while for Germans (and others) it concludes real work. I don't buy that. To me that is like a 19th century chess player playing against a modern Grand Master analyzing positions with a computer. Very occasionally, the 19th century guy may pull off a match-winning genius move, but way more often than not he will just be slowly and painfully outmanoeuvred and lose. Exactly that seems to be happening here (the UK's genius move would of course require a genius player in the first place ...)

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 21:35

Agree Red no way Boris. But who the hell instead? Talk about lack of flipping talent!

NancyWake · 20/06/2017 21:37

To be fair I think comparing current Tories crop with chess players is rather overly flattering.

I think the British have been exceptional at diplomacy and negotiation in the past, it's how we got to a status disproportionate to our actual size and importance. But there's no-one of any calibre in our current government, and the good people they had have either gone or they don't listen.

DividedKingdom · 20/06/2017 21:40

And wasn't the Euro a bit all over the place a while ago?

Yes.

24June16 GBPEUR = 1.31
Today it's around 1.13.

That's a relative decline in the value of sterling of about 13.2%.

Considering all fluctuations during the past year, that decline versus 24 June has varies between -8.4% and -15.4%
