Tomorrow is the Queen’s Speech. In honour of that the start of this thread is written in its honour:

….
Immigration is bad. Except for that good immigration.
….
….
Brexit means Brexit
….
Pilot scheme.
....
….
….
Money for –the DUP-- NI
….
….
Brexit means Brexit
….
The Internet is Bad. Newspapers are good.
….
Brexit means Brexit.
….
….
….
Britain wave your flag.
….
….
….

(The Queen’s turns over the page to read the back of the A4 sheet, only to find it blank)

nauticant They were bought specifically for Grenfell residents to move there permanently
The money was provided by the City of London Corporation, which is the council responsible for the City of London area, hence a "filthy rich" council.
So, Kensington Council again avoid paying for their responsibilities

No plans yet about what would happen to the Grenfell site, but it's probably cheaper and safer to demolish totally and build something else.
That will take years and can only happen after umpteen months of investigation anyway
Not sure if any of the old residents would ever wish to return years later even to a totally new building.
Or if anyone else would want to live there

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 21/06/2017 22:35

If the Grenfell Tower residents are permanently housed elsewhere, what happens to the Grenfell Tower site?

That is a very good question.

borntobequiet · 21/06/2017 22:39

I like to think that hundreds of years in the future, history books (or whatever they have then) will have a very small sub section entitled "The Saboteur Milliner" and everyone will say "WTF"?

borntobequiet · 21/06/2017 22:41

Apologies for levity after some serious posts.

nauticant · 21/06/2017 22:44

Thanks for the clarification BigChocFrenzy. Notwithstanding the survivors getting a permanent home that actually does seem to be local, natural justice would see high spec exclusively social housing being built on the Grenfell Tower site.

RedToothBrush · 21/06/2017 22:45

It's ear marked for redevelopment in the future I guess.

It will be interesting to see who gets that contract and what is built on the site.

Call me a cynic but that nice deal did make me think hmmmm...

Although it sounds like the properties concerned were already ear marked for the developers quota of social housing - although it sounds like the original intention was for shared ownership instead of completely owned social housing. Which rather puts a different complection on the 'generousity' of the offer.

Besides which just how appropriate is it to house Grenfell residents in another set of apartments. Many are struggling to cope with being forced to stay on the higher levels of hotels and have been asking to be moved closer to street level.

This is all setting them up to be termed as 'ungrateful' rather than recognising mental health issues which May is supposed to be so shit hot on.

The new housing for Grenfell apparently not greated by all (but who trusts the medja)

Worse is homeowners and private tenants not included. Why?

nauticant · 21/06/2017 22:46

Ach, don't worry borntobequiet. After the past 12 months' news one thing we have needed is things to smile over.

citroenpresse · 21/06/2017 22:47

bigchoc I read that City of London Corp had bought them for social housing and there was going to be an allocation for k&C but happy to be corrected. My impression was that the development of the social housing allocation element was going to be speeded up to ensure security for at least some Greenwell residents to be relatively local. City of London Corporation already own stuff outside sq mile but presumably within remit of Khan.

nauticant · 21/06/2017 22:50

Hmmm RedToothBrush your post touches on some feelings of uneasiness I had when I heard of the deal. I think on careful scrutiny it'll start to smell a bit. I also think that when the numbers are done the final result will be social cleansing.

RedToothBrush · 21/06/2017 22:54

That reaction is I'm sure all too real. Come across it first hand. People who wouldn't be caught dead at Lidl, and fear it will attract the 'riff raff' in. Seriously, they genuinely think it will knock thousands of their house price and they will be burgled next week and their kids will turn to crime.

I have posted this on another thread but just in case you are interested

I don't know if this has been posted but the Tate will be showing art work of the wonderfully talented Khadija Saye in her memory and all who lost their lives at Grenfell Tower on 14 June. Khadija Saye, Sothiou 2017, on view at Tate Britaint.co/oa5f6koU3b

I hope to go next week. A clear talent lost x

DH has said that he's just watched newsnight and got the impression that Corbyn has been doing deals behind closed doors with the Tories from what a Labour MP said.

Now I've not watched it so I don't know if true. Not sure what to make of that but it strikes me as not terribly democratic and transparent. Why not be open about it, if it's happening?

It might however explain why the DUP deal is left hanging.

Need to watch on catch-up tomorrow.

From Laura K
Labour lords warning Theresa May tonight they'll respect Commons but not necessarily the government - life might get v complicated

City of London owns properties all over London and as far as I know they consider they have responsibilities towards 'the poor' which date way back and extend beyond the square mile. I have worked with them in the past and it doesn't surprise me that they have done this. They have huge resources and I think it's good to see a public body stepping up like this.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/06/2017 23:05

Lest we forget - a little walk down memory lane to when Eddie met Boris for the first time

"You're a nasty piece of work, aren't you?"

DividedKingdom · 21/06/2017 23:19

As liberty says regarding City of London. At the same time, I'll not be surprised if Berkeley Group acquire the Grenfell site at a competitive price as part of the new apartments deal.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 21/06/2017 23:28

If only I could transform like Eddie (very shallow have to look up his tips)

Boris looks even more shite since then. Shame.

RedToothBrush · 21/06/2017 23:30

Btw you remember the debate we had on here about Diane Abbott and her car crash interview and I said the abuse was mostly sexist/racist and I said Johnson wasn't much better as a politician ...

OP posts:
everthibkyouvebeenconned · 21/06/2017 23:34

And he is a known sexist and racist. The irony. But yes just as shite. Trying to say more but I can't.

Yes I can. He's a sexist racist elitist privileged arse who takes our money just to extend his influence power and network

RedToothBrush · 21/06/2017 23:46

Interesting that May broke protocol today by bowing to the Queen when she wasn't supposed to. This led to Corbyn getting a shedload of abuse for 'disrespecting' the Queen.

I have to start wondering if the Queen has given her a right roasting in private and May bowed because she's either scared of her or been told to show the Queen more respect...

OP posts:
everthibkyouvebeenconned · 21/06/2017 23:50

I don't think so. However 'the palace' may have made it's views known?

RedToothBrush · 22/06/2017 00:18

Zoe Margolis @ girlonetrack
I'd just like one night where helicopters weren't circling overhead, late at night. Feels like we're living perpetually on edge. #London

David Allen Green @ davidallengreen
Re-read the first few pages of 1984. The sound of helicopters are an often forgotten effect at the start of the novel.

Zoe Margolis @ girlonetrack
Oh yes! It's almost a foreshadowing sound, an eerie glimpse of horrors

David Allen Green @ davidallengreen
So familiar are we with the novel, we forget how Orwell slowly ramps up the surveillance and intrusions.

Imagine the first readers...

Zoe Margolis @ girlonetrack
I've not read it for years... Not sure this is the best time to re-read, tbh, given current/recent events...

David Allen Green @ davidallengreen
That makes it the best time to re-read it.
