Westministenders: Election Mayhem

Tick tock, tick tock goes the Brexit Clock.

Don’t panic, just don’t turn up to debates because you have talks starting on the 19th June and have to perfect the 100 page document relating to at least 750 international agreements that need renegotiating before then. Anyone who turns up for their job interview for that, is just wasting time.

If only someone hadn’t called a distracting election.

This election was dubbed to be about Brexit. Yet it is remarkable that we have barely had debate over it. No one wants to admit it really. We nearly got a consensus between Barry Gardiner, Nick Clegg and David Davis over it being a political not economic decision on Question Time on Thursday 1st June, but we are not quite there yet with the admission that the economy is toast. This means the addition money the Conservatives have promised for the NHS won’t be available but we can’t have this discussion. Its properly the fault of purdah. Instead the subject rapidly got skipped over. Instead Davis said that the target May had just set for immigration to be at tens of thousands by 2022 was unrealistic.

In post-election rumour has it that Davis is about to get a promotion to the FCO, whilst Johnson gets the boot. On the other hand Gove is also rumoured for NI and May loyal Gummer gets Brexit.

Meanwhile the 1922 Committee of Tory Backbenchers are said to be plotting the downfall of at least one of May’s guard dogs, Nick Timothy following the decision about the Dementia Tax and subsequent U-Turn. Farage also mentioned Timothy in his statement over the breaking news that the CPS are pressing charges on the Conservative Candidate for South Thanet (the former MP there), his agent and a Tory Party official over election expenses. It seems almost inconceivable that Timothy can survive a traditional Tory Knifing.

This is all as May’s leadership approval ratings are in freefall as the honeymoon is firmly ends, after the public finally got to see her create an army of strawmen as answers, in a barely concealed contempt for the public’s concerns. May’s reaction to a negative reaction? Go back into hiding from media accountability and get the Mail to do her dirty work.

Elsewhere the EU have lined up to criticise Trump over his hard ball attempt to renegotiate the Paris Climate Deal. May was noticeable by her absence as she’s trying the same trick over Brexit and is desperate to keep Trump onside. What is Trump offering us in return? Apart from a Brexit Opportunity to get stiffed.

As for the polls? Despite them, it’s difficult to see the Tories not making a net seat gain. For Labour to do well it relies on widespread tactical voting, young who haven’t previously voted turning out in levels not seen since the 1970s and this being spread across the country and not concentrated in University areas. This will be tough to achieve to simply stop a Tory Landslide, never mind a hung parliament. Labour winning a majority is the stuff of pure fantasy (needs Lab to be 12points ahead of Cons). That said, if the result isn’t much different to the 2015 result, it will beg major questions over May’s leadership and her ability to read the public mood. It will say something about her refusal to engage with ‘the saboteurs’.

Expect an increased Tory Majority but not of the epic scale of 470 they originally were aiming for.

Just heard something about the Royal Mail delivering lots of election leaflets to the wrong constituency or not at all.
I'm yet to receive our lib dem one. I know some in the constituency next door got theirs last week. First time the local lib dems did this too Sad

Booph · 02/06/2017 22:30

Piglet
It isn't just Tories that believe in Trident btw. Nor do all those that do read the DM lazy stereotyping

Of course not, I didn't imply it was a Tory obsession. I meant it seemed a bit odd that so many people kept banging on about when Jeremy Corbyn would be keen on destroying millions of people. But the shouty people definitely looked like DM readers sorry not sorry

woman12345 · 02/06/2017 22:30

a narrow Tory majority is the best result for Labour

Absolutely. Tories have created a poisoned chalice. Needs time for the poison to work f brexit up, if the tories haven't done that on their own.

And then, we fight back for the EU and the Britain we are losing at the moment. Long game.

Valentine2 · 02/06/2017 22:36

Maybe however the whole point is winning the election. You don't get anything for coming second.
No. even this is enough to take the edge of Mayhem. And that is good news after what this country has seen in the last whole year.

Bearbehind · 02/06/2017 22:40

TM called this election to increase her majority, if that doesn't happen she's failed.

I actually do want her to be accountable for all this.

It's going to be a monumental fuck is whoever leads it.

At least by winning she either has to take responsibility or blame it on those who chose it.

It'll be interesting to watch.

Valentine2 · 02/06/2017 22:47

Exactly Bear. I think a sizeable part of Labour might think like that too.

lalalonglegs · 02/06/2017 22:48

Valentine2 · 02/06/2017 22:53

I think Farron is going to come out strong too next week. He talks far better than Clegg I think.

TM called this election to increase her majority, if that doesn't happen she's failed.

I begin to fantasise that she loses seats and has to form a minority Government. So she would have squandered a working majority, wouldn't be able to do as Harold Wilson did in 1974 and call another election, because the public are getting tired of this, and would still have to deal with Brexit. Well, I can dream, can't I?

BigChocFrenzy · 02/06/2017 22:56

May called for a vote, allegedly to strengthen her hand at Brexit negotiations
(I doubt an increased majority would interest Barnier & Juncker in the slightest, other than whether it would give her more freedom to make concessions and to deliver what is agreed on)

Of course, she was just taking advantage of what she and the whole Tory party thought was a once in a lifetime opportunity for a massive Tory landslide, with a then disfunctional Labour party, to shape the UK for a generation.
This outcome is now unlikely

Without such initially huge expectations, a comfortable majority of 40-50 would normally be celebrated
However, Telegraph, Times and "Tory sources" say May needs an 80+ majority, or her position within the party will be weakened

Valentine2 · 02/06/2017 23:01

On the red button, I just don't know to be fair. I used to think of it as a deterrent once. But now I can see why we can still abolish it. We have an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction. That is quite enough.

Bearbehind · 02/06/2017 23:06

I've been agonising over my vote for weeks, I still can't decide what to do.

Massive Tory majority in 2015, closely followed by UKIP so there's no chance it'll be anything other than blue here.

I'd just like to feel like I'd made my point I don't agree with where we are heading.

HashiAsLarry · 02/06/2017 23:09

My dreams include a minority alliance of everyone not right wing with Caroline Lucas at the helm.
That was a sentence I never thought I'd write.

Valentine2 · 02/06/2017 23:11

Caroline Lucas at the helm and a minority alliance is too much to ask for. Sad

Cailleach1 · 02/06/2017 23:11

When asked by Neil about funding, May just said they would fund things from the strong economy they would build in the future. And now she said there is no magic money tree. It is as real as the hoped for funding in her future strong economy.

HashiAsLarry · 02/06/2017 23:11

bear
I'm similar, but it makes me feel relieved because I don't have the burden of tactical voting. I'm voting with conscience, combined with the local person being decent. Not a chance they'll get in but hopefully I can spare their deposit.

Charmageddon · 02/06/2017 23:12

I think TM did ok actually - better than I expected; JC on the other hand obfuscated as per usual.

I much prefer these set-ups than people shouting over each other tbh.

HashiAsLarry · 02/06/2017 23:14

Dreams valentine Grin
Though I suppose we're in the world of brexit unicorn fountains so anything goes.

Cailleach1 · 02/06/2017 23:14

Absolutely, BigChoc. She say an opportunity for a slam dunk to give the Con's a longer tenure. Pure opportunism for their own arses. Whatever else anyone says.

Peregrina · 02/06/2017 23:17

Bear - then vote for the party which you feel best represents how you feel.
As we have found, the percentage of votes gained gives parties exposure on the Media - hence the wall to wall coverage of Farage and UKIP, (until they were completely seen to have blown it with the County Council elections).

RedToothBrush · 02/06/2017 23:18

Nigel Farage @ Nigel_Farage
Congrats to @MichaelLCrick & C4 News. Without them the charges against the Tories in Thanet wouldn't have happened.

Irony not dead.

I think May did ok tonight. She got a few questions which really nailed her but much better performance. It will go down well.

However Andrew Neil is critical:

Faisal Islam @ FaisalIslam
Disabled audience member asks PM if he'll be left bankrupt by her care proposals... PM says she wants to consult on details with charities

Andrew Neil @ afneil
Perhaps she should have said that there's no way she would let people like him down. Not fall back on consultations. He sounded very decent

And

Andrew Neil @ afneil
To the distraught young woman the PM should have said she'd like to meet her after the show and go through her case.

His impression is that she was better but no great.

I think that's my impression but after disastrous performances it's all relative and anyone following the campaign would have been expecting another car crash.

As for Corbyn, I think the reverse is slightly true. It wasn't his best performance. He struggled with a couple of questions over corporation tax. There were better ways to answer. Instead he answered in a similar way to May's normal fashion. By going around the houses and answering something else.

Christ, I wish this was all over. This is the 3rd election in 2 years. I want TM to get in with a majority of about 10 so people will think 'What the fuck was the point of that?'
I just wanted to say thank you for those of you who have expressed sympathy about my patient who killed herself. The coroner was brilliant and seemed genuinely shocked that these things can happen in such a rich country and has said that she is going to look into how many similar cases there are.
Speaking to colleagues, most of us give between £50 - £100 per month of our own money to patients every month. I work in perinatal mental health now so I see pregnant women or women with babies. I could argue that, by giving patients money, I'm stopping the government from having to face up to the problem but, as a human being, I can't walk away and leave a pregnant woman or a woman with a baby who can't afford to buy nappies or food. It's fucking depressing.

"TM called this election to increase her majority, if that doesn't happen she's failed.

I think anything less than a landslide is failure as the Tories assumed this was a formality. And, yes, I'd love to see them be exposed for their Brexit lies. But, in the meantime, people have to get on with their lives and the Tories will do nothing to make that better for most of them.
