Westministenders: Election Mayhem

Tick tock, tick tock goes the Brexit Clock.

Don’t panic, just don’t turn up to debates because you have talks starting on the 19th June and have to perfect the 100 page document relating to at least 750 international agreements that need renegotiating before then. Anyone who turns up for their job interview for that, is just wasting time.

If only someone hadn’t called a distracting election.

This election was dubbed to be about Brexit. Yet it is remarkable that we have barely had debate over it. No one wants to admit it really. We nearly got a consensus between Barry Gardiner, Nick Clegg and David Davis over it being a political not economic decision on Question Time on Thursday 1st June, but we are not quite there yet with the admission that the economy is toast. This means the addition money the Conservatives have promised for the NHS won’t be available but we can’t have this discussion. Its properly the fault of purdah. Instead the subject rapidly got skipped over. Instead Davis said that the target May had just set for immigration to be at tens of thousands by 2022 was unrealistic.

In post-election rumour has it that Davis is about to get a promotion to the FCO, whilst Johnson gets the boot. On the other hand Gove is also rumoured for NI and May loyal Gummer gets Brexit.

Meanwhile the 1922 Committee of Tory Backbenchers are said to be plotting the downfall of at least one of May’s guard dogs, Nick Timothy following the decision about the Dementia Tax and subsequent U-Turn. Farage also mentioned Timothy in his statement over the breaking news that the CPS are pressing charges on the Conservative Candidate for South Thanet (the former MP there), his agent and a Tory Party official over election expenses. It seems almost inconceivable that Timothy can survive a traditional Tory Knifing.

This is all as May’s leadership approval ratings are in freefall as the honeymoon is firmly ends, after the public finally got to see her create an army of strawmen as answers, in a barely concealed contempt for the public’s concerns. May’s reaction to a negative reaction? Go back into hiding from media accountability and get the Mail to do her dirty work.

Elsewhere the EU have lined up to criticise Trump over his hard ball attempt to renegotiate the Paris Climate Deal. May was noticeable by her absence as she’s trying the same trick over Brexit and is desperate to keep Trump onside. What is Trump offering us in return? Apart from a Brexit Opportunity to get stiffed.

As for the polls? Despite them, it’s difficult to see the Tories not making a net seat gain. For Labour to do well it relies on widespread tactical voting, young who haven’t previously voted turning out in levels not seen since the 1970s and this being spread across the country and not concentrated in University areas. This will be tough to achieve to simply stop a Tory Landslide, never mind a hung parliament. Labour winning a majority is the stuff of pure fantasy (needs Lab to be 12points ahead of Cons). That said, if the result isn’t much different to the 2015 result, it will beg major questions over May’s leadership and her ability to read the public mood. It will say something about her refusal to engage with ‘the saboteurs’.

Expect an increased Tory Majority but not of the epic scale of 470 they originally were aiming for.

woman It is torrential in Gateshead now.

RedToothBrush · 06/06/2017 15:29

I've just got home to a brilliant leaflet from an independent candidate.

I quote:
I'm no politician - the design and layout of this leaflet will suggest that.

Er... I didn't think politicians were known for their graphic designing skills. I'm not a politician either, but I can manage that.

I'm not from the world of politics either and I stand for no party

Ooooh Ok. Sounds interesting.

There's no access to party money and there's no support team behind this campaign, but its no ego trip

Let me get this straight. You don't have anyone who thinks you are any good and worth supporting and you want me to vote for you? Is this out of pity or to make you feel popular then? Or is this a tactical vote for a protest? And this isn't an ego trip? Ok right.

I'm not a lunatic either (legally lunatics can't stand in an election) but I am standing in the 2017 General Election in Constituency Name because something is wrong when your voting choice is reduced because the politicians start to play games

You're really selling it to me with that. 'Lunatics'? Would I be a lunatic to vote for you? Are lunatics legally allowed to vote I wonder. I think you might have just the lunatic vote if they are.

I am not quite seeing the connection between you and expanding my voting choice because politicians play games. Now I've got a lunatic hating ego manic AND three political parties to pick from. What a choice.

Politicians seem to have lost sight of their constituencies. London is the be all and end all and the UK is dominated by politicians completely detached from the concerns of the people they are supposed to represent - Brexit being a fine example

This constituency is Remain leaning and both the Labour and LD candidate are on the Borough Council and have lived and worked in the Constituency for donkeys years. They both have a lot of local popular support.

Another reason is I strongly believe that Independent MP's would give constituents a lot of clout if the General Election result is marginal and not a landslide for one party.

How? Just asking how you'd represent me better than someone who actually has a support team behind them and knows what other people are thinking rather than being someone who thinks this is a Big Brother popularity contest style vote.

Have courage - be brave and back yourselves to control Constituency Name - with an Independent MP.

No problem with the idea of an Independent MP, but seriously mate. WTF are you thinking? I don't like politics at the moment, but I'm not that bloody desperate.

P.S. I hope you do well and pick up some kipper votes.

P.P.S. I just looked at your website and saw this:

I’m not an idiot.I’m a pretty clued up and grounded guy with lot’s of life and work experience...

You might not be an idiot but following up saying this, with a grammar error like that, doesn't fill me with confidence. I've no problem with people who have poor grammar, but when you are standing for election and trying to have some credibility start with getting someone to double check your election pitch so you don't look like, well.... an idiot...

Reassuring! Grin Grin

Eeeeeowwwfftz · 06/06/2017 15:35

I think it's interesting if you look at what canversers are saying. Which seems to be at odds with the polls.

I presume you are referring to what a canvasser said, as quoted above. Maybe they're right, but there's a fair few folk in the Labour Party who want to see the 'far' left extinguished. So we have to bear that in mind as well.

I can't make a lot of sense of the polls, other than they consistently point to a Tory victory. I am particularly sceptical of anything that relies on a uniform swing.

^Some of us, of a certain age, will remember Sheffield, 1992 ...
'nuff said^
When Kinnock's crimes included: being Welsh, falling over on a beach, and getting a little carried away on a stage.

After booting out Militant, his relationship with the North West in particular took a hammering.

The press was horrendous to him too.

It's almost like they're scared of democratic socialism.

I think too, that JC is genuinely a bit popular after all his exposure, or despite it, guilty as he is, of making jam and working for peace in NI, and having an excellent negotiating team ready to go on this brexit business.

Still, this will seem academic on Friday, when Pob's People are in power.

Tory Andrew Mitchell left floundering as he has no idea what the minimum wage is
In a piece of car crash TV, Andrew Mitchell also couldn't say how many people are on the housing waiting list or how many council homes the Tories built

I do believe in equal opportunities for right wing white men with three homes, but sadly, if he's just not up to the job, Mitchell is becoming an embarrassment. ^

Thank you for the thread Red. Will it keep us from falling on our swords? I think there are such huge regional and local variations in attitudes that pollsters haven't a chance with any sort of national methodology. My day has been spent talking mostly to older voters, and any expected strong pro Brexit motivation in their voting intention was entirely absent, not mentioned once. It was all about services, especially social care and the NHS. Just one was going Labour because felt she could trust Jeremy but not the Lib dems, but for that one there were any number who were exasperated with Labour locally for not standing aside to keep the Tories out.

mathanxiety · 07/06/2017 05:02

Andrew Mitchell looked like a little boy being dragged over the coals by the headmistress.

Diane Abbott 'taking break from campaign'

Diane Abbott has "taken a break" from Labour's general election campaign after becoming unwell, Jeremy Corbyn has said.
The labour leader told BBC Breakfast that he would be speaking to his shadow foreign secretary about her illness.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 07/06/2017 08:30

shadow foreign secretary about her illness.

Not sure speaking to Emily Thornberry helps Diane Abbott Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 07/06/2017 15:46

Cailleach That's some happy news, ooh kittens Smile
If you have pictures, Friday is probably when we'll mostly need cheering up .... < hopeful >
I've seen quite sufficient photos of gurning Maybot and of Bojo pegged up on a wire like laundry for the birds to crap on.
I also shudder when I see Abbott's political plonking.

woman12345 · 07/06/2017 17:29

I'd like kitten pics, too, especially on Friday: tablet, kittens and orchids. Smile and a wee bit of Lindt. BCF

prettybird · 07/06/2017 18:41

So will you need a picture like this to give you the energy to thole the result Wink

Well I've gone my bit.

Ddad and dmum started off this election as diehard blues.

Now they are diehard reds Grin

No, I didn't harass them. Just visited and switched the telly to the debates and 'left' my lefty newspaper around a few times.

I got fil and mil round by offering wine so they came and watched the debates with us live.

They genuinely had no idea what the policies were before. I'm not being horrible.

I love them all to bits, but they would have just gone to the polling booth without even finding out exactly what each parties offers were.

Peregrina · 07/06/2017 20:29

Well done Killdora.

Killdora · 07/06/2017 20:35

Thanks Grin

It's going to be all about the small victories this time around I think.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 07/06/2017 20:40

Latest polls

Panel Base Tory 8 point lead
ComRes Tory 10 point lead
ICM Tory 12 point lead

CivQueen · 07/06/2017 20:43

Aye.

I've got the wine on standby for tomorrow.

At least if the Tory's get a huge majority I'll have the capacity to drink enough that I'll forget we even have a government. Grin
