Theresa May is being held hostage.

There is mounting evidence that all is not as it seems at CCHQ. It makes you don your tin foil hat and ask who is in charge.

Theresa May was a Remainer. She suddenly abandoned that when she became leader. Her proclamation of what would follow next seems directly at odds with her actions. This is not her fault. This is her plea for help and way of telling the outside world that she is a prisoner of Brexit.

At first it seemed like perhaps she had been locked up with Brexiteers for too long. She seemed to be developing a survival strategy which seemed totally irrational to outsiders. The signs of intimidation everywhere though. Instead of criticising those who did this, May joined in with them or was complicit in her silence.

Things are now taking a sinister turn. After repeatedly saying ‘No Election’, May crumbled and called one. She has now not been seen in public since. Instead she is being wheeled out at closed events to the party faithful. They are being dressed as mixing with the people but they are no such thing. The plebs in attendance are set to ‘mute’ or locked out completely.

Behold the coming of the May-Bot. She seeks to ‘prevent tourism’ in Wales. She now no longer knows which town she is currently in. (Much less have a plan for Brexit). She accuses an organisation set up to use its numbers to get better deals, of doing what it is supposed to, except she calls this ‘ganging up’.

May is not transported in a bus. Oh no. Instead she travels by the Bond Villian’s choice of transport; the helicopter.

More worrying still is the mantra ‘Strong and Stable’ repeated as many times as possible. It is almost as if, if she says it enough she might start believing it. She certainly has got her party members brainwashed and acting as if they were Zombies. Who needs ‘Spice’ when you are a Conservative? They ‘Believe’…

The ploy is to hoodwink people into voting for May instead of the Tories. CCHQ have removed Conservative branding from literature and campaigning in the North. The party are still too toxic, but May apparently scores well especially against Corbyn. Ironically however negatively I think of Corbyn he does display something May increasingly seems incapable of: humanity.

Many people might think of May as some sort of dictator figure. Its true. Every vote for her strengthens her hand. But not for Brexit negotiations. Mainly because Brexit is without merit or reward. Not unless you hold power. This is part 2 of the grab for it.

This is May’s power paradox. SHE is not powerful. She isn’t persuasive. She isn’t a healer of divides. She relies on authoritarian measures to get her way. This isn’t a sign of her personal power, but a sign of her personal weakness. She is sly and sneaky in her methods rather than compelling others to come along with her. They are doing so more because they dislike the alternative in Corbyn less.

She is not stable. She has lurched from one drama to the next, and has repeatedly been forced to back down from what she wanted. Nothing says ‘stability’ and ‘good leadership’ like appointing Boris Johnson Foreign Secretary. The lady is not so much for turning and leading, but is already staggering around dizzy whilst blindfolded playing pin the tail on the donkey. And Christ she’s got a lot of them in her Government. Including the numpty who decided to do a live event and broadcast it in an area with no wi-fi. Mind you, that is soon to be the entire country. Or what’s left of it.

She had said she had a mandate for Brexit and did not need this to be approved by the country as she was getting on with the job. This is why we are having a General Election to give her a mandate…

Not only that, but there is a lurking question here that should not be forgotten. Who is pulling May’s strings and making her dance as her actions are not natural? Every puppet show has puppet masters behind the scenes of the stage, hiding in the shadows.

They will dispense with their toy once she has outlived her usefulness like every good baddie.

Is she the one we should be most fearful of?

Hold on tight this is going to be a very bumpy ride over the next two years. Just how many casualties will be sacrificed on the altar of Brexit?

In the first instance, it will be their fault for not getting into the grammar school.

woman12345 · 30/04/2017 15:37

the Tories may keep hold of their 40% vote indefinitely

Dreadful prediction, BigChoc, but atm looks like you are right.

The 35% core vote policy worked well for new labour for 3 terms, until it didn't.

In the Tory manifesto that doesn't exist, the DT suggested that the reduction in number of MPs from 650 to 600 won't now happen. Obviously that 50 will be tory, or will it?

"Smaller pledges, from a promise to plant 11 million trees that was way off track to cutting the number of MPs from 650 to 600, could also quietly be left behind".

.

was not a trace of compassion for the Not Managing At All
Another stat that got swallowed up in her dalek replies on Marr was his question about working poor families losing £2500 pa under her coming regime. That's an astounding amount of money, and no acknowledgement or engagement from her in her answer.

SwedishEdith · 30/04/2017 15:46

Exactly, Peregrina.

^Kim Jong-May awkward and incredulous as journalist asks question
Leader was in full Maybotic mode on the Marr Show as she droned on … and on about strength and stability^
“Do you think gay sex is a … ”

The Supreme Leader had been expecting this one and she jumped in before Marr had finished his sentence. “NO, NO, NO.” She absolutely loved gay sex. Nobody liked gay sex more than she did. Nothing was more strong and stable than gay sex providing it was done strong and stably
Grin.

SwedishEdith · 30/04/2017 15:47

"no acknowledgement or engagement from her in her answer."

Because she won't have been briefed on the answer. She cannot think on her feet.

Thank you RTB for the running commentary on May's appearance on Marr earlier - taking one for the team. Interesting parallels with the Trump thread, where posters have done similarly for his post-inauguration "rallies" circle jerks to spare the sanity & blood pressure of others.

mathanxiety · 30/04/2017 16:19

Apparently it has not occurred to Theresa May that VAT as Britain knows it is an EU tax.

BiglyBadgers · 30/04/2017 16:19

She also kept going on about a meritocracy. Which sounds fair but is also a tactic to blame people for their circumstances

The term meritocracy was originally used (in The rise of the meritocracy) to describe a dystopian system whereby those who already have all the advantages get given more and those who are not blessed are left to fend for themselves. Certain people, including Tony Blair, looked at this dystopia and thought "gosh, that sounds like a good idea" and suddenly it started to be talked about as a good thing rather than a deeply unfair policy that it is. It is a policy that disproportionately rewards the rich because, let's face it, it's far easier to pass academic exams if you have educated parents, your own bedroom, decent food on the table, and extra tuition. I deeply dislike the term and am not surprised at all that May would be all for it.

BiglyBadgers · 30/04/2017 16:24

Sorry, I realise I am probably telling you all things you know. It is just a term that gets me in a ranty rage! Angry

prettybird · 30/04/2017 16:25

I'll second illegitimateMortificado: the TVs of the Westministenders non-May-believers thank you. Wink

Safe pair of hands for Brexit ??? ....

Behind Sunday Times Paywall - Political Editor:
May is living in another galaxy, says Brussels

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/may-is-living-in-another-galaxy-says-brussels-mlfrk928c

"Brexit negotiations began with a blazing row yesterday as Brussels flatly rejected Theresa May’s negotiating position"

and accused the prime minister of living in a “parallel reality”.

"The other 27 EU member states took just four minutes to agree a hardline stance on Brexit at a summit meeting in Brussels

before Jean-Claude Juncker, the head of the European Commission, and Michel Barnier, the chief European Union Brexit negotiator, rounded on the prime minister.

They told EU leaders that May had used a meeting with them on Wednesday night to demand that a “detailed outline” of a future free trade deal be in place before the UK agrees to pay any money to Brussels as part of the Brexit divorce deal."

An EU diplomat said:

“This was a rather incredible demand. It seemed as if it came from a parallel reality.”

"Juncker warned yesterday that that approach would lead to an “early crash”, with Britain leaving the EU without a deal.

In an eight-page document outlining their position, the other 27 countries said the EU would “prepare itself to be able to handle the situation if the negotiations were to fail”.

"Juncker and Barnier told leaders that the Wednesday dinner at 10 Downing Street had also
revealed huge differences over plans to recognise the rights of British citizens and EU nationals in each other’s countries.

Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, said a “serious offer” was needed on migrant rights from the UK before trade talks could begin."

An EU diplomat told The Sunday Times:

“The UK’s position is miles apart, both on their financial obligations and on the EU citizens’ rights.

The UK government simply wants to create a new category of ‘former EU citizens’ in their migration law,

but our position is that we must go much further than that.”

"The prime minister’s stance that trade must come first was met with incredulity by EU officials, who said her chief EU sherpa Grin , Oliver Robbins,
had already agreed that the methodology for agreeing the Brexit bill would be ironed out first

— along with the rights of EU citizens in Britain and the issue of the Irish border.

“She took a firm position against something we thought we had agreed,”

a diplomatic source said.

“It was completely unreal.”

The source said the prime minister’s views on the financial settlement “border on the delusional”.

Over dinner, Juncker slapped down May by pulling out a copy of

the EU-Canada trade deal, a 2,000-page document that took nearly a decade to negotiate,

and recommended that the prime minister study its complexity.

Juncker’s aides said he then called Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor
and complained that

May appeared unaware of issues communicated to her staff.

According to one of Juncker’s aides, he told Merkel:

“It went very badly. Sad
She is in a different galaxy.

Based on the meeting,
no deal is much more likely than finding agreement.”

That prompted Merkel to lambast British “illusions” about Brexit in a speech to her parliament on Thursday.

May responded that EU countries were “ganging up” on Britain
[blithering idiot emoticon]

"But strains are already clear between the two sides."

**

"Brussels officials expressed incredulity that Nick Timothy, May’s chief of staff, had declined to join the dinner on Wednesday.

A European ambassador who has been briefed on the meeting said:

“We don’t know whom to ring.
We thought it was Robbins, but it is clear he has been cut out.
We have no one to call.”

Tory sources said Timothy and his colleague Fiona Hill had been banned from the dinner by the civil service

because they had had to resign their posts to_ run the general election campaign._

Juncker was scathing. He said:

“I have the impression sometimes that our British friends do underestimate the technical difficulties we have to face.

The British want to leave the European Union and it’s not feasible for this to be done quickly.

But the dinner was excellent.”

He then took a swipe at the Downing Street chefs: “I’m not talking about the food.”
< Hmm crikey, what British delicacies did they serve Shock >

"Dominic Raab, a former Tory minister who backed Brexit, said the fierce reaction from Brussels was proof that the EU was on the back foot....
It is invariably a sign of insecurity, not strength."
Grin < whatcha smokin' Dominic ?! >

mathanxiety · 30/04/2017 16:34

TM is completely tuned in to the worst instincts of the people whose votes she is courting, as is usual with the divide-and-conquer Tories.

She is ticking all the boxes - meritocracy is huge. It is linked to people's beliefs about the class system, hierarchy, the rightness of the way the world works, how the world should be ordered. All very atavistic.

woman12345 · 30/04/2017 16:39

Also on the wonderful Trump thread, when Spicer is doing a press conference, noble volunteers go in to witness and report back to posters. Thanks all Smile

May's open contempt of media is familiar.Hmm
We're the Marr and Peston audience and those answers were serving to please her core and enrage us. Not dissimilar to Trump and Spicer's technique of deliberately goady pronouncements/ media management.

They can take the piss because they have the power.

It works?

Peregrina · 30/04/2017 16:55

Apparently it has not occurred to Theresa May that VAT as Britain knows it is an EU tax.

Ah yes, we must bring back Purchase tax, as I think it was. While we are about it, let's bring back the old rate bands for Income Tax. Of course her hubby would lose a bob or two in the process.

Are the Sunday editions of the Times and Telegraph like the Sunday edition of the Mail i.e. at war with their daily counterparts? That would explain their tone.

prettybird · 30/04/2017 16:57

Inspired by the Samsung ostrich ad (poor advertising: it took dh and I a number of watches and a deliberate effort to remember who it was for to actually "stick" Confused)....

Theresa May is an ostrich with a virtual reality headset on living in a world where everyone does what she says - because she has made it clear and she represents strong and stable government. Grin

The fact that in real life the world is going to pot doesn't matter because it is sunny and fabulous in her world.

She will give acolytes headsets programmed with the same sunny imaginary world, so it will only be when they starve or the power runs out that they realise that they've been duped, by which time it will be too late Hmm

....struggling to continue the analogy to incorporate the rich cronies elite who will either be above the chaos or who will profit from it. Golden eagles circling? Grin

"Theresa May faces fresh accusations of 'hiding' after Scotland rally publicly listed as child's birthday party

Very odd election, this one.

EmilyAlice · 30/04/2017 17:42

This tweet on #MacroninEnglish made me laugh.
When asked today what a future Macron government would look like, I was unable to prevent the words "strong and stable" escaping my lips. 😳

EmilyAlice · 30/04/2017 17:44

Sorry - @MacroninEnglish.

Eeeeeowwwfftz · 30/04/2017 17:47

I believe there is bad blood between the editors of the Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph. I'm not sure about the Timeses. Private Eye is full of this sort of stuff, and if there are people who like these threads but don't read Private Eye it might be worth giving it a go.

prettybird · 30/04/2017 17:48

Not only did TM arguable break election law and the terms of the charitable trust that runs the hall in booking her "meeting" as a children's party, it is also debatable how many of her "supporters" were there willingly Hmm
