Brexit

So the good times are about to roll....are they?

I wanted to ask on another thread, but they are all bunfight-y.

I am a remainer so I feel very depressed about today. I would like some reassurance from brexiters about what I have to look forwards to.

I'm afraid 'taking back control' isn't clear enough to me, so an explanation of what will be different if that's the theme you will go for.

So far, since the vote, my family has lost £10,000s and my husband's current job/role has been placed in jeopardy. I have probably lost the ability to automatically continue to work in an EU country in under 2 years time (I currently live in Germany, though this was intended to be temporary). I have dear friends relocating out of London since the banks are shifting jobs due to Brexit so I'm not sure who I would be moving back to. My house is worth less and I'm less likely to be able to sell it if I do want to move. I'll need to get the kids Irish passports if I want them to benefit from the EU.

So cheer me up - we're set for a brighter future aren't we? What can I look forwards to?

Apparently, doctors are begging to be able to work more hours than is allowed by the wtd.

The doctors I know often work more hours than allowed by the wtd - because they put their patients first, and don't clock watch and clear off as soon as their designated shift finishes.

ReleaseTheBats · 29/03/2017 21:41

Blah blah racists blah ignorant blah blah duped blah bigoted blah don't listen to experts blah blah xenophobic blah small minded blah don't care about the younger generation blah daily mail readers blah thick blah

Why won't any leavers come and discuss Brexit with us?

squishysquirmy · 29/03/2017 21:47

I haven't seen much of that on this thread ReleaseTheBats.

It's a very circular argument though: blame the lack of leavers on a thread on the fact that there is a disproportionate amount of remainers on the thread, due to the fact that there aren't many leavers on the thread.

If people say that they are worried about how Brexit will affect them, they are not attacking you personally you know.

herethereandeverywhere · 29/03/2017 21:49

Eh Release? What does that mean?

We're talking amongst ourselves because no-one has answered my OP (well, we've had the piss poor Telegraph list, cookies pop ups and something very vague about business reporting that the poster hasn't come back to explain).

So if Brexit isn't about all those stereotypical things you just listed with the 'blah blahs', what is it about? It surely cannot be difficult to state, simply, who (broadly) will benefit and how (broadly).

OP posts:
Deadsouls · 29/03/2017 22:04

I do not feel particularly hopeful about this entire process. (Voted remain). My thinking is that leavers are particularly invested in believing that this will be a 'wonderful' thing for Britain. If they stop believing then it might mean they are wrong. So must therefore stick to the position of this being really really good and exciting, and 'taking back control', and 'freedom' etc.

ReleaseTheBats · 29/03/2017 22:05

I'm still confused about why anyone would want to leave unless they are racist, bigoted, ignorant, or gullible

I'd love to hear too. They're so dogmatic and defensive that I'd love find out what they're actually optimistic about. Just soundbites and growling that I've heard so far

Sorry, I have nothing positive to say other than I see most Brexiters are racist

No, not much of it on this thread Hmm

CardinalSin · 29/03/2017 22:14

Deadsouls - I think you've hit the nail on the head. They can't possibly admit that everything might not be rosy in the garden of Brexit, that would be like a 90 year Catholic nun admitting that their god doesn't exist - i.e. that their whole existence had been a waste!

23positionsina1nightstand · 29/03/2017 22:16

Hey, Release you've arrived! Come, enlighten us... we're stumped, as you can see.

herethereandeverywhere · 29/03/2017 22:19

Thank you Release. Those comments are not in response to my OP, which called for Brexiters to explain why 'we' have cause to be happy today.

What is going to get better, for whom and how?

Just a rough explanation or a cut and paste or a link would be fine.

Thanks

Three objectionable comments (in at least one instance taken out of context) in over 4 pages = not much.

TheElementsSong · 29/03/2017 22:26

Typical...

Deadsouls · 29/03/2017 22:26

Cardinal

I stress that this is entirely my reflection.
Another thought, was that a lot of leave voters I knew as acquaintances, on 24 June last year were excited, celebrating etc. But somehow, it seemed as though there was an assumption that leaving would be simple or that, you know, we'd voted leave so....that was that, cue: 'get over it', 'suck it up', 'will of the people', 'democracy', 'taking back control of our country', 'putting the great back into great Britain' and so on and so forth. However, from what I've read and observed, this process is going to be anything but simple. In fact, very complicated and complex.

CaptainBrickbeard · 29/03/2017 22:33

It's so tantalising when people turn up and imply that there are simply dozens of non-thick, non-racist reasons for voting out but then decline to share them!

iwouldgoouttonight · 29/03/2017 22:35

OP I really want to hear some facts about the benefits of leaving too. I've just got sucked into reading comments on Farage's FB page (WTF that came up as a suggested page I might like God knows) and it seems to be a combination of people saying how happy they are are at 'making Britain great again' Hmm, complaining about 'remoaniacs' spoiling their fun, and being downright racist (barbed wire around the coastline to keep 'them' out).

It's scary and depressing. I would love to hear an actual positive. Apart from the high powered vacuum cleaner that I'd been desperate for all my life obviously.

herethereandeverywhere · 29/03/2017 22:36

I am concerned that the result of the referendum has been treated, by some Brexiters in particular, as the equivalent of a football result. Their side won, your side lost, cue lots of ribbing about the losing supporters, lots of celebrating for the winning side. But I really want that to be a false impression.

So what do we have to look forwards to? Who is going to be better off? In what way?

OP posts:
OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 29/03/2017 22:36

Are people genuinely suggesting that the WTD is a good reason for Brexit? You can opt out y'know.

herethereandeverywhere · 29/03/2017 22:48

At least it's an actual concrete factual reason Ovaries.

OP posts:
CardinalSin · 29/03/2017 22:48

CaptainBrickbeard - I've been thinking the very same.

herethereandeverywhere · 29/03/2017 22:51

....Well, pretty much 12 hours in and I'm still not attracting any answers. Do I need to ask on a Brexiter thread? When I looked before it seemed like anyone who asked something similar was shouted at for being a Remoaner and spoiling the celebrations of the Brexiters who had 'got their country back'.

OP posts:
Kaija · 29/03/2017 23:14

They're all too busy working 60 hour weeks harvesting rare newts with their powerful vacuum cleaners.

ReleaseTheBats · 29/03/2017 23:14

It's so tantalising when people turn up and imply that there are simply dozens of non-thick, non-racist reasons for voting out but then decline to share them!

OP I appreciate that you have started this thread to genuinely seek out leavers' views and I am sure there are other posters likewise interested in an actual discussion.

Unfortunately, whilst there are pp making comments like the above, most leavers are not going to feel able to engage. There is a limit to how much abuse most people will chose to put themselves up for. I note someone commented that I had only c&p's 3 insulting comments before as if that was not many. Perhaps people need to imagine how they would feel if comments like that were made at them.

In my experience, the name calling always increases when there is an actual step towards Brexit. Perhaps in a week or two it will be possible to talk more constructively on here again.

80sMum · 29/03/2017 23:19

Noblegiraffe "I found the official Brexit advert I was thinking of earlier, a split screen of in the EU and outside the EU."

Omg!! That is disgraceful! I had not seen that video ad before and can hardly believe what I have just seen!! What utter bullshit!! Whoever made it should be prosecuted for fraud! Shock

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 29/03/2017 23:19

I left the pub (repeatedly Grin) because of all the insults thrown at remainers

Leavers also left the pub because of the insults thrown at them

Neither party have been innocent of insult hurling

CardinalSin · 29/03/2017 23:29

Ah, Release there making excuses for not providing any good reasons for Brexit. Funny how often that happens, as opposed to, say, providing valid reasons or anything...

herethereandeverywhere · 29/03/2017 23:31

I'm sorry Release but that looks like a poor excuse to me. Some kind of false moral stand to hide behind.

If there really is happy news to share, ignore those posters you are incredibly focused on and focus on the question in my OP (and repeated often) instead Smile
