jackny I stood and watched the march for over an hour while I was waiting to meet my brother. During that time, I saw loads of German, Spanish, French, Italian and Greek tourists watching the march. For me, the 'point' of it was that all those people will have seen that there is a huge number of people in the UK that don't support Brexit.
You could ask what is the point of the anti Trump demonstrations. I see it as exactly the same as those marching today - that millions of Americans want to let the world know that a huge number of them didn't vote for him.

user1486924355 · 25/03/2017 17:59

I just showed this to DH, his response was, a load of middle class bored Stay at Home House Wives with nothing else better to do, who will not make the slightest difference. As a stay at home (working class house wife, i'm afraid I do agree). Btw, what do you all hope to acheive by this march?

20nil · 25/03/2017 18:00

As the others have said, police were consulted and happy for it to go ahead. I can't think of a better way to honour the dead and celebrate democracy. I was proud to be British today, something I haven't felt for a very long time.

user1486924355 · 25/03/2017 18:01

MissHooliesCardigan - acceptance, hilarious.

Bearbehind · 25/03/2017 18:12

user I don't think you can get anymore 'bored housewife' than coming on this thread posting goady fucker comments from an anonymous name that no one recognises or cares about

If nothing else today has shown TM that she does not have the support of the 65m people she claims to have

MissHooliesCardigan · 25/03/2017 18:22

Bear just ignore it. That's what I'm going to do. I am so glad I went.

user1486924355 · 25/03/2017 18:28

Bearbehind. anonymous user name ? so this is your real name. Lol. Btw, my intention was not to be goady, so I will let someone else have the last word.

Bearbehind · 25/03/2017 18:31

Yes, anonymous user

There's so many of you people with the username user it's tedious

squoosh · 25/03/2017 18:37

'I just showed this to DH, his response was, a load of middle class bored Stay at Home House Wives with nothing else better to do'

It's a very particular type of poster who starts with 'my husband says....'

As though the mere fact it's a bloke's opinion lends it more weight.

In the words of the angry orange toddler, 'Sad!'

user1490211912 · 25/03/2017 18:45

Another user here, still thinking of a good name. I went on the march.

Great things:
Sunshine, numbers, mound of beautiful flowers in memorium at gates of HOC, great speeches, nice people, hipster police, sound system in Whitehall.

There was a scary forecast of what could be round the corner for us by the Polish speaker: as government is becoming more totalitarian in Poland, judges are chosen for political expediency, civil rights are shut down and surveillance increased. That all sounds very like what May is doing now.

And optimistic appreciation of what liberalism joining EU meant for Poland. It was interesting.

Lammy was outspoken calling May's regime totalitarian. He was also honest and right that the brexit campaign was racist.

The train ride back was a chance to link up with local remainers; the fight goes on. Smile

Thanks for the thread.

whatwouldrondo · 25/03/2017 18:48

user whichever one you are As a now approaching old aged business woman now working mainly in international markets, academic who has studied another part of the world and overseas NGO supporter, as well as one time SAHM I most certainly hope I can make a difference because it is very obvious to me that we are in danger of committing economic and political suicide and becoming the world's pariah as well as betraying the children I have brought into the world and the values I have taught them. I have to deal with how we are regarded by the rest of the world on a daily basis. You and your husband?

TheElementsSong · 25/03/2017 18:57

Thanks to all who were able to march today Flowers We were with you in spirit Smile and sounds like you did us proud!

(Ignore the Bremoaners who are obviously rattled)

CaptainBrickbeard · 25/03/2017 19:03

What did I want to achieve on the march today?

  • a chance to unite with people who feel the same as I do, to remind myself how many of us there are.
  • to give a message to our politicians that a huge number of people do not want Brexit and that they do not speak for us all, in the hopes that this will discourage them from pursuing a hard Brexit.
  • a message to the rest of the world: not all British people want this; so many of us value our place in the EU.
  • to give a powerful rebuttal to the anti immigration rhetoric that has prevailed; so many of the signs today stated that immigrants are welcomed by us.
  • to feel that I did what I could, that I did something to make my voice heard.

But of course, if someone's husband thinks it was a waste of time then how can I, a silly fluffy-headed middle-class woman (not a housewife though!) possibly disagree?!

Thegirlinthefireplace · 25/03/2017 19:10

Was going to reply myself but captain brickbeard put it perfectly and I agree completely. Especially point one as I am in a leave area so feel quite isolated in my views and feelings at times.

WindyScales · 25/03/2017 19:10

Oh well then, the master has spoken. All these silly little middle class women can scuttle off. How dare we have an opinion.

User I'm cringing for you.

MsHooliesCardigan · 25/03/2017 19:13

Captain Agree 100% with everything you've said. I spent a good half an hour today chatting to an American visitor. She desperately wanted to assure me that loads of Americans hadn't voted for Trump and I desperately wanted to assure her that loads of Brits didn't vote for Brexit.

20nil · 25/03/2017 19:17

I also wanted to say happy birthday to the EU. It has its problems, but I think it's been very good for Europe overall.

CaptainBrickbeard · 25/03/2017 19:21

I am confused though, because my own husband was in full support of me marching and indeed has looked after our children this weekend so I could go. But even though he is a MAN and therefore his opinion is obvs worth loads more than mine, he is quite middle class so maybe his opinion counts less than user's husband's? It's a very complex equation. But maybe we should get user's husband to come give his verdict on all of the threads on MN and then we could stop bothering our little heads about them and get on with our housewifely duties??

whatwouldrondo · 25/03/2017 19:25

Over the last forty years of my working life I have got up and got on with it after more terrorist incidents in London than I want to remember, when working in both the City and West End, as well as having to deal with the shock and horror and worry for loved ones when it happens yet again. Today felt like a particularly positive way in which to do that. Marchers were thanking every Policeman they encountered and I saw many Policemen come over to look at the number of floral tributes around and opposite the gateway where PC Fletcher was murdered. We were marching as much in celebration of the democratic values that they defend and that was very evident in their response.

Shame on the Brexit armchair carping

fluffypigs · 25/03/2017 19:32

I was there too! Great to see so many people out. Smile

WindyScales · 25/03/2017 19:35

CaptainBrickbeard Grin

I'd like to see the answer to that question!

AutomatonSimine · 25/03/2017 19:41

Just wanted to pop in and say thank you to those of you who marched. My eldest DS went but the rest of us weren't able to go.

I followed a lot of the social media coverage - looked like good spirits and civility all around. The placards were both hilarious and poignant. Thank you to those who went.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 25/03/2017 19:50

user1486924355

Great day there. MrsLH and I really enjoyed it - great atmosphere and wonderful to see so many youngsters getting involved.
