The tide is turning away from Brexit and May knows it.

Peregrina · 08/03/2017 14:06

Some people didn't vote because of heavy rain in the south east. If you have just been flooded out of your home, I doubt whether polling is the first thing on your mind.

Something to be marching for? The EUs declaration for its 60th anniversary on 25 March “Taken individually, we would be sidelined by global dynamics. Standing together is our best chance to influence them, and to defend our common interests and values.”

I think you might be right. Definitely a sense of panic being displayed from the leave side this week.

If the nazis get hammered in the Dutch election and the French continue to have their Tony Blair moment, the wind could be taken out of their sails.

I don't think it is, not with the Leavers I know. They are getting more and more fanatical, Brexit at absolutely any cost. Admittedly, this is easy for them to say, they're almost all old, they won't have to pay.

I also wish the Gov would be a bit more honest and realistic about this fantastic trade deal they're going to negotiate with the EU. I can't believe we will get any deal and that 27 countries are going to agree it. They should just make plans to cope with WTO rules and advise businesses to do the same.

Peregrina · 08/03/2017 20:06

But that would mean investing NOW - so immediately beef up HMRC. Start building places for Customs inspections. Start investing in automotive parts so that cars can be built here. Decide now, what regulatory regime we want to put in place for medicines, agriculture, industrial equipment. Train people now to replace those from the EU and other countries who will no longer wish or be able to come here. With the best will in the world, that is already more than two year's work - more like 10.

The tide is turning away from Brexit and May knows it. Leavers among the rank and file may still be enthusiastic but the people that matter - the newspaper editors and owners - seem to be cooling towards the idea. They will be the ones that persuade many Brexiteers that it might not be such a marvellous idea after all, at least not the chaotic Brexit that May seems nihilistically drawn towards.

I don't suppose these "noisy lefties" will be joining you Grin

Labour Leave

Today's lefty Europhiles (from the champagne socialist Blair era onwards) bear little resemblance to the traditional Labour supporters and have far more in common with their Tory Europhile friends. Clarke, Blair, Major, Balls, Heseltine, Miliband, Soubry, Kinnock all appear to be singing from the same hymn sheet.

At the Labour Party conference of 26/04/74, only seven of forty-six trade unions present supported EC membership, and the Labour membership rejected continuing membership of the EC by a margin of almost 2:1.

woman12345 · 08/03/2017 23:01

It's the art of the possible.

WifeofDarth · 09/03/2017 07:44

We'll be there, rain or shine. Looking forward to it.

Errr that was 1974. The clue is in the date. Only two (very small) unions supported Brexit - the RMT (who are in a unique position for many reasons) and the Bakers and Allied Workers Union.

It's a great shame that we didn't get to hear from more union voices during the Brexit negotiations - especially e.g. the Unite officers who are in charge of collective bargaining on the union side in the car industry, or, say, Dave Prentis of UNISON.

The BBC has a lot to answer for with the disproportionate coverage it gave to the likes of Farage et al, while failing to listen to rational voices on the other side.

Peregrina · 09/03/2017 09:01

Yet the following year the vote was something like two to one to stay. I don't recall anyone being told to suck it up they lost, or what bit of democracy didn't they get? Those who didn't like it spent the next 43 years 'banging on about Europe' bringing down two Prime Ministers in the process (although the second one did help himself in his downfall).

I will be there on 25th - barring accidents or illness.

Because with each passing day all the little signs are starting to pile up, and there is a backlash growing.

Also, given the nature of the demographic of the Leave vote, that

oliviafrombolivia · 09/03/2017 22:55

I will be there - first ever march, apparently I am a leftie and a member of the metropolitan elite - who knew?

Niamer · 16/03/2017 19:52

Thank you Tanith. Absolutely. This should be read by everyone in the UK. I don't think many people voted for EU citizens to feel the uncertainty they do.

Bump . Forecast for Saturday is good. See you there!

Trufflethewuffle · 22/03/2017 08:21

We won't be there in person on Saturday as we have a litter of puppies due this weekend.

We will be there in spirit, best wishes to everyone taking part.

twofingerstoEverything · 23/03/2017 13:18

There's a spoof Twitter account called uniteforeu, as opposed to uniteforeurope, which is spreading a rumour that the march has been called off. It's a fake, folks!
March still going ahead from same place and organisers willl advise if it will end somewhere different from Parliament Square.

Another hoax apparently. Someone really doesn't want the march to go ahead!

What a relief - I've reported my post to MN so it can be removed Smile. See you all there!

LurkingHusband · 23/03/2017 18:31

Trying to work out the logistics, not brilliant Sad

Not sure why 11:00am was chosen as a start time - seems very London-centric ? - certainly makes travelling down from Brum a challenge. Even more so with a wheelchair Sad

Well, there's always voting ....

twofingerstoEverything · 23/03/2017 19:03

It is a difficult start time for people who have far to travel, but it would be okay to just attend the rally, which starts at 1, wouldn't it?

Niamer · 23/03/2017 22:52

Yes, it is an early start, but not a problem if people come a bit late, I'm sure.
