Brexit

To wonder if there are any Leave voters who actually are having second thoughts about Brexit

Following Tony Blairs call for Remainers to convince Leavers to change their mind I'm wondering if there are actually any Leavers who are worried and might prefer us not to be going in the direction we are heading.

From what I've seen Leavers are more determined than ever and really don't seem in the slightest bit concerned about any negative repercussions so they're not going to be swayed.

Who is Blair aiming his comments at?

peregrina bur presumably N Sturgeon will have an answer as she will be faced with the same problem if she wins her next indyref and eventually manages to convince the EU to allow Scotland to accede.

See above - if Sturgeon wins indyref2, and Scotland accedes to the EU, then there will need to be a border between rUK and Scotland as the latter will have to be in Schengen, and thus be an external EU border.

That's a lot of 'ifs' scaryteacher, and as yet, Scotland hasn't had the Troubles.

scaryteacher · 19/02/2017 00:09

Peregrina One could argue that Scotland has had the Troubles, albeit on a smaller scale. A friend who used to work in Glasgow had to keep her mouth very shut in certain areas!

Yes, it's a lot of 'ifs', but presumably this would be on the agenda, and thus the SNP will have thought about it, (as will Sturgeon's special committee of the great and the good which was set up to advise her) albeit without the sectarian issues to add to the mix.

What I would like to see now is the BBC go back to those people who they had asked just before the Referendum and see if they have changed their minds. Especially ones who wanted more money for the NHS, especially if they are in an area where their local hospital is now under threat. Or the fishermen who wanted out of the fisheries policy and are now told they are unlikely to get what they want.

I don't recall the BBC going down to Cornwall, but I'd now like to know how those areas there which have done well for EU money feel now they have been told that Westminster isn't planning to match it.

My local hospital was under threat during Blair tenure always had dodgy reputation then after 2004 the horror stories got much worse and people died there. Local papers full of coroners reports this was bad, that was bad. Local ladies terrified to give birth there. Mid wife crisis etc. It went down and down and down. Then it was called one of worse hospital in UK. So for me it couldn't have got bloody worse. I was all prepared to ask for ambulance to take me to the other one should I or family ever need ambulance, because desperate locals had already done this. Now it's been taken over by another trust and is slowly in recovery. I don't think it could ever be as bad as it was under Blair with people literally being killed there. Women left alone to labour, women botched labours etc.

That's not Blair, that's dodgy hospital management fullmrexit. It's still happening in hospitals up and down the country, and whilst it's good to hear yours has improved, lots of others haven't.
If you want to blame someone, then blame Margaret Thatcher. She changed the NHS so that it became an internal marketplace and put in place the system of hospital management. I have many family members that work in the NHS and I had to spend the early 90s listening to their endless worries about Maggies new managers 😬 They were of the opinion that Labour (after 1997) were unable to fix the widespread problems the Tories had caused but thought that they did at least try and that the NHS was better for it.

Peregrina - WalesOnLine (The Western Mail newspaper) did this in the Welsh valleys. I thought maybe they'd selected stupid people on purpose, but it's also quite likely that these are the arguments the average Brexiteer will give. It includes believing the NHS pledge:

SLParasite - bit dramatic don't you think? I'm married to a "forriner" who has stayed here for many years and I have absolutely no concerns over him having to leave ( and no...he doesn't have a British passport )

Did you read the part where I said I'm not in the UK?

Peregrina · 19/02/2017 14:20

An interesting link Gwenhwyfar.

For the one positive pledge - more money for the NHS - the Leave voter would now vote Remain.

Mostly, apart from the man who welcomed more black and brown immigration, thinking that we had a duty to the Commonwealth countries, basically it's the same anti immigrant, especially Muslim, story.

Gwenhwyfar · 19/02/2017 18:40

The thing about the Commonwealth is just the old 'Brittania rules the waves' thing, harking back to empire and not wanting to be 'bossed about' by Europeans because Britain is "superior".

No, no regrets.

1ris · 28/02/2017 21:17

No regrets either.

winkywinkola · 28/02/2017 22:50

I think it'll be a year after we've left properly that the regrets will kick in.
