Brexit

To wonder if there are any Leave voters who actually are having second thoughts about Brexit

Following Tony Blairs call for Remainers to convince Leavers to change their mind I'm wondering if there are actually any Leavers who are worried and might prefer us not to be going in the direction we are heading.

From what I've seen Leavers are more determined than ever and really don't seem in the slightest bit concerned about any negative repercussions so they're not going to be swayed.

Who is Blair aiming his comments at?

I agree it really is old ground cream but why don't you accept our democratically elected, accountable government was always sovereign?

I thought we elected MEPs in European elections..?

creampinkrose · 18/02/2017 21:33

If you mean (and I am genuinely not completely sure, feel free to correct me if I am barking up the wrong tree) that I should object to the queen as head of state, I do. But politically she has little, if any, clout.

Bearbehind · 18/02/2017 21:35

You've completely lost me cream

Why should Nicola Sturgeon have any solutions for N Ireland? Her country doesn't share a border with the Republic. Admittedly parts of Scotland have their own sectarian issues, but to my knowledge they haven't been as bloody as those in Ireland.

May and Johnson should be the ones getting their arses into gear onto this one.

Caprianna · 18/02/2017 21:37

Cream, I think the EU is doomed if do not reform and I vited against my home country joining and still would vite no today. I think withdrawing from the union today at this time in history is

RoccoW14 · 18/02/2017 21:37

May is completely out of her depth and Johnson is a fraud of a politician.

PenelopeNitStop · 18/02/2017 21:37

Bear - I have reported my own posts and told the Bar I fucked up too Flowers

Caprianna · 18/02/2017 21:38

Ops....very bad news and risky.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/02/2017 21:39

"We do not elect officials in the EU, ergo, they are not accountable to us."

Not this again. We elect the politicians who make the decisions in the EU - the national ministers coming together and the MEPs. We don't elect the officials, but nor do we elect officials in Whitehall. People talk about faceless bureaucrats, but how many UK civil servants can you name?

Bearbehind · 18/02/2017 21:41

Don't worry penelope

It's easy for things to get heated round here and I do admire you for admitting your mistake.

I just posted in the bar too

Cheers [wne]

Gwen - not this again

Indeed :) but I was asked.

In any case, as I have said, I'm not going to change my mind, nor is anyone.

Caprianna · 18/02/2017 21:45

Noone ever changes their mind on MN whatever topic. I think people are in agreement on the Trump thread. He unites peopleWine

creampinkrose · 18/02/2017 21:46

That's for sure!

Bearbehind · 18/02/2017 21:54

In any case, as I have said, I'm not going to change my mind, nor is anyone

That's quite a fitting way to end the thread really because that was exactly my point in the first post.

No matter what reason or logic is put forward, Leavers are resolutely refusing to consider it might not all be roses so Tony Blair can do his worst, it ain't going to make any difference.

PenelopeNitStop · 18/02/2017 21:55

It's weird that Trump has proven to be such a unifying force. Like being brought together by a large malevolent hamster.

PenelopeNitStop · 18/02/2017 21:56

Maybe Tony and Trump should team up........peace in the West, as we rail against those two.

PenelopeNitStop · 18/02/2017 21:56

Ah fuck, and now I've shat on your thread ending.........

my heart says that I voted the right way

Oh that's lovely.
For me, on the other hand, unless I'm really lucky, it's now looking like the only way I can stay in the country I love, far more than where I was born, is by killing myself, and being buried here, if they will let me (not the UK).
And yes, I'm aware this sound melodramatic, but I really love this place, and I am so, so afraid I am going to lose it.

Funny, too, how everyone is writing off the so-called 'project fear'. The UK hasn't left yet, so of course the effects have yet to be felt.
I believe this is going to be an utter catastrophe for the UK. It's also handed the tories carte blanche to (continue to) behave as badly as they like - most of the complaints about the NHS etc are as a result of systematic starving of funds, and hardly anything to do with pressure from immigrants. Hooray for the class divide, as it becomes a chasm.

Splooter · 18/02/2017 23:18

SLParasite - bit dramatic don't you think? I'm married to a "forriner" who has stayed here for many years and I have absolutely no concerns over him having to leave ( and no...he doesn't have a British passport )

scaryteacher · 18/02/2017 23:28

Marcia whilst her friends claim Belgian nationality by the day, and moaning that the Belgians, who are part of the EU, take some anti globalisation measures to protect their local industry and businesses because it makes things more expensive. I only have one Brit friend who is claiming Belgian nationality, and if you are she, are you coming to bookgroup next week, and I have some post for you as well.

My other Brit friends, plus my US, Canadian, and Aussie ones aren't claiming Belgian nationality - so I don't know quite where you get that from.

As for not liking the costs here, the Germans don't either, so it's not just me.
