Brexit

To think this could mean the end of brexit?

Now MPs will be able to block it. Could this be the end of this ridiculous brexit? MPs can not vote for something that they think will not be in peoples interest and its very clear the people that voted to brexit would be the ones worse off.

JO'B is doing a fab job on LBC today and most brexiters seem to be happy that it might not go ahead as they were fooled by lies!

I will be extremely annoyed if my MP (Emily Thornberry) votes to leave in order to go along with the Labour party. 85% of her constituency voted Remain.

Cru, write to her and keep writing until you get an assurance! I'm writing to mine. She was a Remainer but is also a Corbynista.

Interestingly, brexit and trump could be signs that all of the "Corbyn won't get elected" crowd are utterly wrong too.

That is a good idea, Sapphire.

Mine is a Tory and voted Remain in a Remain area. At the moment, I can't even get a reply out of her. I have been waiting 3 months now. The one reply I got in August appeared to be a standard letter answering points I hadn't made and ignoring ones I did.

If she now intends to vote to support A50 i.e. Leave, I would like to hear her arguments why. And I want something stronger than, 'It's the will of the people' because it's not the will of 16,000,000 nor is it the will of significant numbers who are directly affected and were disenfranchised including British Citizens abroad, for which there was a Manifesto commitment that they would be given a vote. I am not including those who didn't vote - it's not unreasonable to assume that they had no strong opinion.

Did people see this a couple of days ago:

The European Parliament is to consider a plan that would allow British citizens to opt-in and keep their European Union citizenship – and its associated benefits – once the UK leaves the EU.

I'd be game for this!

But this comment made me laugh: "Brexit campaigners in Britain reacted with anger to the idea, arguing that it would discriminate against Leave voters and that it was “an outrage”.

I saw that and read about the "outrage" with this face HmmConfused

vulpeculaveritas · 10/11/2016 14:58

How would it discriminate against leave voters? Surely they could opt in too?

Or can we not choose to do this because of "the will of the people".

Who knows what the quite clearly batshit logic is?

Just seems to be more and more words and phrases some of these people don't really understand... 'democracy', 'parliamentary sovereignty', 'stitch up', 'discrimination'...

Saw that and emailed my LibDem MEP to ask her to support it. Didn't bother emailing two others, namely Messrs Hannan and Farage because I though it would be a waste of time.

A dog in the manger attitude by the Leavers.

Don't see them being all het up about the 'outrage' and 'discrimination' of ex pats retaining dual citizenship... such as my Uncle in the USA...

CruCru · 10/11/2016 15:23

Okay, I've just emailed her. Here is a copy:

"Dear Ms Thornberry

I understand that the Prime Minister plans to begin talks on leaving the EU next March. However, in order to invoke Article 50, there needs to be a parliamentary vote. Mr Corbyn has stated that Labour will not attempt to delay or scupper the process of invoking Article 50.

I would be grateful if you would state how you plan to vote on this issue. 75% of voters in your constituency voted Remain. As such, I would expect that you would vote in line with your constituents - that is, against triggering Article 50.

Yours sincerely"

CruCru - you might get a dusty answer to say that she is a representative not a delegate as Mrs May did to one of her constituents.

Other than that may I borrow it for my own MP.?I have got copious notes to form the basis of another long letter to her, but the short pithy ones are probably more effective.

SapphireStrange · 10/11/2016 16:41

Then she has to represent all of her constituents, however they voted. And she has to remember that she has sworn an oath to do the best for the country.

It's a delicate balance, granted, but that's the job.

Report
CruCru · 10/11/2016 17:10

Sure, feel free to use that. You might have to reword it if your constituency voted in favour of Leave.

I do see the point about representing all constituents. However, I am concerned that she may vote as her party leader tells her to, rather than in line with the wishes of the majority of voters in her constituency.

Report
SapphireStrange · 10/11/2016 17:53

Well, in her case, Cru, the balance surely comes down on the side of her Remain constituents AND the good of the country.

A shoo-in for Remain if the world was sensible, which it isn't

Report
Peregrina · 10/11/2016 18:08

Mine voted Remain in a Remain constituency, but I am expecting a 'people have spoken' response. Well 16 million didn't, and they have a duty to consider our wishes too, if only to persuade us why it's a good course of action.

Now my LibDem MEP has already replied to my email of yesterday.

Yes, Nicola Blackwood MP, you owe me the courtesy of a reply from an email of three months ago.

I posted this on another thread but thought it may be better here. I am trying to get Remainers views and support for Charles Goerens. He is the liberal member of the EU Parliament (previous roles include Minster for Foreign affairs and for Cooperation,Humanitarian action and defence) who is trying to help us.

He has realised how divided we are, and supports the 48% who wanted to remain part of the EU. He has proposed an amendment to the relevant Treaties that may enable those British citizens who want it, some of the same rights they had as EU citizens, including :

🔹the right of residence

🔹 to travel freely in the EU

🔹to be able to vote in European elections and

🔹be represented by an MEP.

He is a very experienced parliamentarian and must think this is feasible. It is worth googling him asap and following him on Twitter and liking his page on Facebook? His proposals are due for debate in about three days time!

I know that the 48% would prefer full citizenship, but for Remainers this is better than nothing.Surely following him sends a message from the otherwise forgotten 48%?

I've been in touch with Charles Goerens already and had a fast and enthusiastic, committed-sounding response from him.

I also emailed the London MEPs and have had similarly impressive responses from two of them. In contrast to my own MP

I emailed all those who sit on the committee - their names and email addresses were on a facebook page. Trouble with facebook is, you can't always find the posting again. So I am not sure if it was the 48% facebook page or the Vote for Europe facebook page.
