Good to have a set date.

OP posts:
Me2017 · 06/10/2016 18:48

I think 50% of our immigration is people from outside the EU.
I would certainly support better controls on who comes in although I would never describe myself as anti immigration.

smallfox2002 · 06/10/2016 18:49

Give your reasons for that?

Me2017 · 06/10/2016 19:08

Reasons for which bit of it?

smallfox2002 · 06/10/2016 19:12

Wanting control of immigration? Seeing as the controlled bit is higher than the freedom of movement.

Waytogojo · 06/10/2016 21:53

Me2017 didn't say she wanted LESS immigration; she wanted it controlled - control over WHO comes in

smallfox2002 · 06/10/2016 22:27

Same thing, just dressed up.

Corcory · 06/10/2016 22:59

I also want control over immigration. Which certainly isn't the same thing as wanting less immigration.

smallfox2002 · 06/10/2016 23:09

Again. Why?

Corcory · 06/10/2016 23:14

I want to see the same controls set for every country not different depending if you are from the EU or not EU.

smallfox2002 · 06/10/2016 23:16

Why?

Waytogojo · 06/10/2016 23:29

To filter those who are not - to use your phrase - net contributors, is one possible reason. To assist forward planning. For security reasons. I'm sure small you can think of a few too, even if you don't agree with them. The bewildered stance is rather disingenuous

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 06/10/2016 23:33

Give your reasons for that?

Why are you demanding aggressively that posters constantly justify their stance to you?

smallfox2002 · 06/10/2016 23:33

Funny that all terrorist attacks on British soil have been conducted by British or Irish citizens.

Forward planning? Bollocks. 87 percent of schools kids in the uk get their first choice school, but because of austerity not immigration. The healthy migrant effect helps the NHS, and the cutting of the immigration fund by the coalition stopped funding for areas who may have had issues.

Most EU migrants are net contributors, new immigrants contributed 2.5 bn more to the exchequer in 2015 than they took out.

Not bewildered, challenging ignorance.

smallfox2002 · 06/10/2016 23:40

Further, the vast majority of children born to.immigrant parents go to primary school in the area they were born in.

At least as much forward planning needed for British kids.

Oh BTW the record of children born to immigrants only records the mother, at least one third are born to British fathers.

smallfox2002 · 06/10/2016 23:40

See not bewildered, challenging ignorance.

smallfox2002 · 06/10/2016 23:54

Why am I demanding reasons?

Well to state something like : "I want control over immigration" needs justifying doesn't it?

Merely a statement, and based on spurious reasons as given above needs questioning.

Waytogojo · 06/10/2016 23:59

An ignorance shared by 75% of the population then it seemsHmm

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 07/10/2016 00:04

Posters are entitled to their opinion. You You are really coming accross as very aggressive.

smallfox2002 · 07/10/2016 06:50

People are entited to an opinion it doesn't mean all opinions are equal.

Something like 70% of the British population would bring back hanging.

Don't make them right.

Lets be honest, the people that say that immigration is their biggest concern are doing so mainly because their perceptions have been shaped by the media or because of their own prejudices, or a very small limited personal experience. Not because of any valid reasons based on broadly gathered evidence and analysis put to peer review.

If we do things that people want, because they think it might bring about positive change, but aren't factually proved, lets bring grammar schools ( oh wait), hanging, national service (yougov shows a poll saying people support that to), and the 1950s in general.

Just because something is popular doesn't make it right, or a valid opinion.

The Asimov quote about democracy, and no it does not mean that your ignorance is as good as my knowledge.

TheElementsSong · 07/10/2016 06:53

If something is based on false premises does it become true simply because a majority of people believe it?

Waytogojo · 07/10/2016 07:00

'True' cannot be applied to opinion

TheElementsSong · 07/10/2016 07:05

I said "based on false premises". There's a difference.

And while we're there, I can follow up then - if an opinion is shared by a majority, does that mean that it is right?

smallfox2002 · 07/10/2016 07:07

As said, not all opinions are valid.

Ciutadella · 07/10/2016 07:10

In fact a 2015 btitish social attitudes survey found fewer than 50% of uk population now support capital punishment - first time it had gone below 50%. Not the point of the thread i know! And there may be some fluctations, - but anyway it doesn't seem to be around 70% any more.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 07/10/2016 07:16

As said, not all opinions are valid.

No, you just refuse to accept that others have different opinions to you.

Have you ever thought that maybe not all your opinions in life are valid?
