Dear xxxxxx

The Government has responded to the petition you signed – “Invoke Article 50 of The Lisbon Treaty immediately.”.

Government responded:

The British people have voted to leave the EU and their will must be respected and delivered. We should not trigger Article 50 until we have a UK approach and objectives.

The British people have voted to leave the EU and their will must be respected and delivered. The process for leaving the EU and determining our future relationship will be a complex one, so we need to take time to think through our objectives and approach. We want to ensure the best possible outcome for Britain and the future UK-EU relationship. As part of this, the government will of course work closely with the devolved administrations to ensure we get the best deal for the UK as a whole. We should not trigger Article 50 until we have a UK approach and objectives, so Article 50 should not be invoked before the end of this year.

Nope any version of Brexit is better than membership of the EU and like Surfer says we have two years to negotiate.

surferjet · 15/08/2016 21:25

I think most of them want us to fuck off anyway - we were never that popular with EU leaders were we, always trying to negotiate special deals. They see us as a pain in the arse tbh.

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 15/08/2016 21:25

So a version of Brexit that looks pretty much the same as our current EU membership, ie, freedom of movement, similar contributions, similar regulation but no seat at the table anymore is better how?

crossroads3 · 15/08/2016 21:30

Out of interest, were any of the leavers on this thread at all worried after the vote when, as leaders around the world reacted with dismay and disbelief, the only messages of congratulations came from Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen, Geert Wilders and ISIS? Or are you generally ok with keeping that company?

I am also interested in the answer to this question.

Kaija · 15/08/2016 21:31

Christ, Surferjet, so how do you rate our chances in negotiations if you think that's the attitude of the rest of the EU?

Of course it's by no means just the EU leaders that were horrified.

surferjet · 15/08/2016 21:38

Well, none of the EU leaders would congratulate us would they? ( even though some are probably envious ) And as for other world leaders I doubt they care. The Donald Trumps of this world just say what they like, he's not in anyone's pocket.

OP posts:
smallfox2002 · 15/08/2016 21:49

But you don't get what you want surfer, there is no overwhelming mandate and that has to be recognised just as much, if not more than your article 50.now demands.

StripeyMonkey1 · 15/08/2016 21:50

I'm not sure that Donald Trump is not in a anyone's pocket.

Russia appears to have some interest in him www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-us-2016-37080909

Donald Trump's top aide has denied receiving "payments" from the former Russian-backed Ukrainian government.

"I have never received a single 'off-the-books cash payment,'" Paul Manafort said in a statement.

The New York Times reported finding ledgers pledging $12.7m (£9.8m) in undisclosed cash payments to Mr Manafort between 2007 and 2012.
Hillary Clinton's campaign has called for Mr Trump's team to disclose any pro-Russia links.

"The simplest answer is the truth: I am a campaign professional. It is well known that I do work in the United States and have done work on overseas campaigns as well. I have never received a single 'off-the-books cash payment' as falsely 'reported' by the New York Times," the statement reads.

The New York Times article said Mr Trump's campaign manager and his business played a key role in advising Ukraine's former pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled after an uprising in November 2013.
Mr Manafort's work advising Mr Yanukovych's pro-Russia political party, ended when the country's parliamentary elections were held in 2014, he said in his statement.

The New York Times report said Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau had discovered the listed payments in the ledgers of Mr Yanukovych's then governing Party of the Regions - allegedly part of "an illegal off-the-books system".

The bureau is also investigating business deals worth millions of dollars put together with the help of Mr Manafort's business.

...

surferjet · 15/08/2016 21:56

Smallfox. Tbh, whatever happens now is going to annoy half the country. It's not good is it.

OP posts:
Kaija · 15/08/2016 21:58

Wow. So you're ok with Trump, Surferjet. How about ISIS? I think I know now what your answer would be on Marine Le Pen and Geert Wilders.

As I said, it was by no means just EU leaders and commentators who were horrified by the outcome of the vote - the shock and sympathy came from around the world - with the notable exceptions already mentioned.

surferjet · 15/08/2016 22:04

Were they the only 4 people to congratulate us in the entire world? No one else at all?
Sorry, I'm not on Twitter so not up with all the gossip, but I can't believe every other leader around the world was crying over it.
Why would they be? Unless they were crying because they can't screw us for 350 billion anymore.

OP posts:
PennyAsset · 15/08/2016 22:04

I was visiting friends in Nottingham the other week and the EDL were marching in the city centre. 160 complete saddos outnumbered 2:1 by anti fascists. I doubt my Leave voting PILs will be joining them.

Farage will probably be back as UKIP leader before the end of the year as his ego won't be able to cope without the attention. He can spend another 20 years demanding we leave the EU for all I care because we won't and most Leave voters will say 'thank fuck for that'.

smallfox2002 · 15/08/2016 22:06

I don't think it will annoy half the country.

See the leave vote was all things to allook men, jam tomorrow and then after that everyday. It shaped it's argument based on what it thought people waneed to hear, not what is likely or possible.

Your voted one way for a reason, but so.did the men at my local who think all immigration should stop, so did.my friends in the north who thought that the NHS would get more funding, so did the hedge fund manager hoping it would stave of he regulation of his industry.

There is a very possible chance that far.more hand half of the country are going to be pissed off when they don't get what they want.

Kaija · 15/08/2016 22:08

Oh my god. You really do have no idea, Surferjet.

smallfox2002 · 15/08/2016 22:12

Haha you used the 350 billion figure.

Argument fail.

crossroads3 · 15/08/2016 22:12

Unless they were crying because they can't screw us for 350 billion anymore.

Grin
Kaija · 15/08/2016 22:16

You two are right - better to laugh than cry. But Jesus.

Bearbehind · 15/08/2016 22:18

Unless they were crying because they can't screw us for 350 billion anymore.

If it weren't so serious I'd be roaring with laughter - are you really so fucking naive that you believe that's true?

smallfox2002 · 15/08/2016 22:28

Oh and it's million, not billion.

surferjet · 15/08/2016 22:40

Oh yes sorry, a billion is more than a million - just like 51.9% is more than 48.1%

OP posts:
Kaija · 15/08/2016 22:42

I think we all took the million/billion typo for granted to be honest. It's the rest of the post that's so tragic,

TheElementsSong · 15/08/2016 22:46

Oh yes sorry, a billion is more than a million - just like 51.9% is more than 48.1%

Only if you're implying that the Leave vote was 1000-fold stronger than the Remain vote! (Unfortunately I believe we have all switched now to the American definition of billion).

smallfox2002 · 15/08/2016 22:47

Still not a significant majority, or an overwhelming mandate.

Twist and turn it all yout like. The petition to get the second referendum was set by leave campaigners, Farage said there would be issues left over on a small.win remain.

This is the democracy you so cared for, which makes it funnier that you're not getting what you want outside of your "win"

surferjet · 15/08/2016 22:54

I know you won't believe me smallfox, but if we'd been the 48% I would have been very disappointed, but no way would I have signed a petition for a second referendum. I'd have accepted we'd lost fair & square and that would have been the end of it.
If you lose you lose, doesn't matter if it's by 2% or 50% - I respect democracy.

OP posts:
Kaija · 15/08/2016 23:03

That's very magnanimous of you, but it puts you at odds with your leader:
