Dear xxxxxx

The Government has responded to the petition you signed – “Invoke Article 50 of The Lisbon Treaty immediately.”.

Government responded:

The British people have voted to leave the EU and their will must be respected and delivered. We should not trigger Article 50 until we have a UK approach and objectives.

The British people have voted to leave the EU and their will must be respected and delivered. The process for leaving the EU and determining our future relationship will be a complex one, so we need to take time to think through our objectives and approach. We want to ensure the best possible outcome for Britain and the future UK-EU relationship. As part of this, the government will of course work closely with the devolved administrations to ensure we get the best deal for the UK as a whole. We should not trigger Article 50 until we have a UK approach and objectives, so Article 50 should not be invoked before the end of this year.

I hate the fact that they keep stating the British people voted to leave. It wasn't ame overwhelming majority just under half voted to remain! It's not an overwhelming mandate.

PennyAsset · 15/08/2016 19:18

I have no doubt that we'll remain in the EU. Us Remainers just have to play the long game.

surferjet · 15/08/2016 19:41

Hmm.....I'm beginning to think you're right PennyAsset only problem with that is, Nigel Farage will come back as leader of UKIP, they'll rise & rise in popularity because he's the 'messiah' come back to save the people - others will join parties like the EDL out of sheer frustration at being fucked over by their government, so that party will grow - the country will become more divided and angry than it is now - so you may well get your wish & we probably will end up staying, but something far far worse will happen.

OP posts:
ManonLescaut · 15/08/2016 20:08

I do wish Leavers would stop subtly threatening violence if they don't get their own way. I'm not remotely afraid of Farage and the EDL.

Bearbehind · 15/08/2016 20:10

I agree penny.

My biggest gripe with this whole fiasco has always been that no one will get what they want so what was the point.

As each day goes by the powers that be are backing away from actually leaving the EU.

It looks very much like they are all hoping it will go away and the Leavers will forget what they voted for.

surferjet · 15/08/2016 20:20

Leavers won't forget, don't be ridiculous.
What I'm saying is, leaving the EU will be the lesser of two evils for you remainers. Because the politics you despise will grow if we don't leave.

OP posts:
eurochick · 15/08/2016 20:22

My flabber is gasted. What kind of fucking idiot thinks invoking Article 50 ASAP would be a good idea? It would be hugely against our national interests. Yes, ongoing uncertainty is bad but putting ourselves in a two year countdown without getting our ducks in a row would be suicidal. I can't believe there are 100,000 people in this country dumb enough to sign. Do so many people in the uk want to see the country struggle?

surferjet · 15/08/2016 20:33

It was a retaliation message to the ridiculous ' we demand a second referendum' petition.

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 15/08/2016 20:37

I didn't say they would forget surfer I said it looks like the powers that be are hoping they will - on account of the fact they have no other answers.

Bearbehind · 15/08/2016 20:38

It was a retaliation message to the ridiculous ' we demand a second referendum' petition.

Ffs, is it too much to ask that people vote for what they actually want/ believe in rather than this 'protest' vote bollocks.

surferjet · 15/08/2016 20:44

The powers that be are hoping that definitely, - the rich & powerful hoping they can fob off the plebs.
we'll just have to wait & see what happens.

OP posts:
StorminaBcup · 15/08/2016 20:44

so we need to take time to think through our objectives and approach

Shouldn't they have done this before holding a referendum on leaving the EU?

StorminaBcup · 15/08/2016 20:46

X-post with itsallgoingtobefine, that'll teach me for not RTFT Grin

Figmentofmyimagination · 15/08/2016 20:46

'Retaliation message'? Jesus Christ. How stupid would you have to be to sign something like that? Why not sign up to something that you actually want - whatever that is? How hard can it be? Errr Very hard, as it happens, since none of them have the first clue what they actually want (except the scary ones leading everyone else by the nose - banks, redwood, fox etc). One day this is all going to inspire some great dystopian fiction.

Sooverthis · 15/08/2016 20:49

I voted for what I believe I don't care if it's soft Brexit or hard Brexit I just want to Leave and Article 50 is just a clear statement of our intention to do so and needs to be invoked sooner rather than later as the uncertainty is very bad for trading and the markets in general. Like it or not we are a democracy, we held a vote, we voted out. If we don't Leave then the the issues that caused the Leave vote, as Surfer says won't magically disappear they will fester and erupt. The elitist we know what's best go back to your shed peasant narrative really needs to change. The upside is its only really on Mumsnet that this rabid remained philosophy stands.

Bearbehind · 15/08/2016 20:56

The upside is its only really on Mumsnet that this rabid remained philosophy stands.

There have been some priceless comments since the referendum but this takes the biscuit.

What planet are you on to think that the world outside of MN thinks Leave is going swimmingly and we'll come up smelling of roses?

surferjet · 15/08/2016 20:57

Why not sign up to something that you actually want

I did! I voted to leave the EU.
I also signed that petition because I want to trigger A50 ASAP. I know what I want but people keep telling me I can't have it.
Well fuck that.

OP posts:
Sooverthis · 15/08/2016 21:05

I never said Leave was going swimmingly, uncharted waters are often difficult but only on mumsnet do I encounter this viscous level of intolerance. I am reasonably happy with events so far but feel it's time one for A50.

Bearbehind · 15/08/2016 21:10

surfer I'm assuming you are the OP but have changed the way you spell your username- why do you want to trigger a50 now?

What do you think that will achieve?

Does it not concern you that the reply you received was a load of repetitive bullshit that essentially said 'we can't do anything until we work out what the feck we want?'

Bearbehind · 15/08/2016 21:12

Same question to you then soover

Given there has been no definitive indication of what we hope to achieve, what is to be gained by invoking a50 now?

Kaija · 15/08/2016 21:13

"It was a retaliation message to the ridiculous ' we demand a second referendum' petition."

Which, as you surely know, was started by a leaver when they thought remain would win.

Out of interest, were any of the leavers on this thread at all worried after the vote when, as leaders around the world reacted with dismay and disbelief, the only messages of congratulations came from Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen, Geert Wilders and ISIS? Or are you generally ok with keeping that company?

Sooverthis · 15/08/2016 21:14

Certainty that we will Leave

Bearbehind · 15/08/2016 21:17

Certainty that we will Leave

And do you care on what terms or at what price that might be?

surferjet · 15/08/2016 21:18

Of course it's me, I haven't changed the spelling.
& I want to trigger A50 now because you get 2 years to negotiate anyway. We don't trigger A50 & leave the next day!

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 15/08/2016 21:21

You have- the OP has a capital S and your other posts don't so you're not highlighted as the OP anymore.

How much negotiating power do you think we'll have with 27 countries who know that if we haven't come to an agreement in 2 years they can just tell us to fuck off?
