Why are Leave voters afraid of a second referendum? Don't they trust the results?

If you really believe in democracy and that the Leave vote was the will of the people, then surely you will be confident that a second referendum would have exactly the same outcome?

But Leavers aren't, are they - they're terrified of a second referendum because they know that the results would be Remain.

From which we can infer that there is actually a real lack of depth, of meaning, in the Leave vote, given that it would be overturned in a second referendum. Which totally supports the view that there should be a second referendum.

Alfie ....finally a voice of reason

In a few years time, when the EU is falling apart, those who voted remain will be thanking those of us who saw the light.

Louw1988 · 01/07/2016 21:05

I don't think the EU will be around by the time my daughter goes to secondary school

Mishaps · 01/07/2016 21:07

Hey I know - we could have another referendum as the numbers were so close; and then if it was close again, we could have another and another........

Louw1988 · 01/07/2016 21:08

Lol yes let's keep it going until our preschoolers are old enough to vote 😂 It's just silly and it's been made clear its not gonna happen anyway

NameChanger22 · 01/07/2016 21:10

The EU isn't going to fall apart, the UK is in about 2 years time.

Margrethe · 01/07/2016 21:10

I voted Remain. I don't want a second referendum. The referendum may have been a bad mistake, but it was made. Democracy is precious. Certainly, more precious than the economy in the medium term. It's a slippery slope.

captainproton · 01/07/2016 21:13

Omg, I didn't vote purely because I fell for project fear. If you hold a second referendum don't assume people won't switch from remain to leave.

Please, to all the whiners on Facebook can you pack it in now. Do realise though that if there is a second referendum, putting self righteous posts on Facebook and attending pro-EU rallies in London is mainly you preaching to the converted. It's the Welsh and English economically deprived regions you got to target. Do be prepared to meet people with a completely different experience of life than you.

Louw1988 · 01/07/2016 21:14

If you say so... I say we will be all better off and all the remain voters will be eating thier words

NameChanger22 · 01/07/2016 21:15

If you don't want a second referendum, just don't vote. Over 4 million of us want one. We won't have what's left of our democracy if we leave the EU anyway. We already have tonnes of bad stuff sneaked through with hardly anyone knowing about it. The UK is not quite the democracy you think it is. I haven't voted for May or Gove but one of them will get the job.

fryingtoday · 01/07/2016 21:16

You lost. Live with it.

NameChanger22 · 01/07/2016 21:17

Actually we all lost, you just haven't realised it yet.

Louw1988 · 01/07/2016 21:17

Name changer there will not be a second referendum! If there was of course I would vote again and again if I had to. Why would us leave voters not vote again and let the remain voters win / we got that we voted for!

Redactio · 01/07/2016 21:17

What amazed me is the fact that the young were afraid of risk and change, it fell to the older generation to take the lead.

NameChanger22 · 01/07/2016 21:19

The penny will drop eventually.

Louw1988 · 01/07/2016 21:21

I'm not old! I'm 28 and I voted out because I am not afraid of change and I didn't listen to the campaigners! I did my own research and voted!

Redactio · 01/07/2016 21:26

Well done Louw1988.
I was having a slight dig at those who think that anyone over 50 who doesn't agree with them should be denied the vote.

NameChanger22 · 01/07/2016 21:26

I like change too. I've made drastic changes to my life, lived in a few different countries and had many different jobs. I'm regularly changing my hair colour and moving stuff about. But those changes are usually for the best and they are reversible. Unlike this one. If you wanted change you should have done something that didn't ruin things for everyone else.

Louw1988 · 01/07/2016 21:31

Or make things better for everyone then?

Your assuming it's gonna make the uk go bang
We're assuming it's gonna make us stronger

You may be right... We may be right
No one knows but if we're all grown up and accept it and look forward we can make it better for our children and grandchildren
Did you grandparents or great grandparents not fight for our freedom?

My Nan was 93 and sadly died before the vote but she deserved to vote just like anyone else!

NameChanger22 · 01/07/2016 21:34

I hate to break it to you, but things won't be getting better for everyone. You picked the wrong kind of revolution and handed all the power to the wrong people. Good bye human rights.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/07/2016 21:36

The biggest issue with a second referendum is the damage a further period of uncertainty would do

Sheer common sense as usual, but confusingly, given their claims that leavers have trashed everyone's future, some of the remainers don't seem worried about effects like this. All some appear to want is their own way, preferable involving another referendum in which we're all expected to get it right this time" - with possibly more to follow if we don't?

The petulance is actually getting pretty worrying now; we've had the attempts to redefine democracy, the dubious claims to know how many regret their vote, the endless insistence about what voters understood or didn't and god knows what else ... but to fall back on "you're all just frightened of another vote"?

Oh dear Hmm

Louw1988 · 01/07/2016 21:38

If you say so name changer, you do not Know anything for sure. No one does but I have faith in the UK

RosesareSublime · 01/07/2016 21:41

Incredible isn't it Puzzled Confused

Redactio · 01/07/2016 21:42

Namechanger22 - we handed all the power to the wrong people. Now we have got it back.
Here's a challenge - Name (without Googling) the European Trade Commissioner who was threatening the UK today.
For bonus points, how many people voted for him?

NameChanger22 · 01/07/2016 21:53

Whoever he is, he doesn't govern the UK, the government does and in 2 years they will have more power. That's 2+ years of uncertainty we are getting anyway.
