Why are Leave voters afraid of a second referendum? Don't they trust the results?

If you really believe in democracy and that the Leave vote was the will of the people, then surely you will be confident that a second referendum would have exactly the same outcome?

But Leavers aren't, are they - they're terrified of a second referendum because they know that the results would be Remain.

From which we can infer that there is actually a real lack of depth, of meaning, in the Leave vote, given that it would be overturned in a second referendum. Which totally supports the view that there should be a second referendum.

Oh and I forgot to add, both sides get off Facebook and Twitter (hardly platforms for sensible debate) and just go about living your normal lives, I can hazard a guess for most of the country life will carry on exactly the same day to day.

EmpressofBlandings · 01/07/2016 19:47

It was me, Asprilla - thank you for responding. Obviously, my point of view is a bit different, but it's really interesting to hear from someone on the opposite side of the argument.

I suppose from my point of view, the numbers that the Remain campaign used always seemed easy to trace and to understand why (e.g. the £4300 was modelling a 6% drop in GDP), but I accept that you will disagree.

I have to disagree very strongly with you about the £350m claim. Leave repeatedly used that figure, which they knew was before the rebate, and they didn't factor in any of the other things that we got back, like the money for Cornwall and Wales, money for scientific and medical research, agricultural and fisheries subsidies, etc. They KNEW that their numbers were wrong - not stretched, just plain wrong. The Remain campaign were utterly useless at getting this message across to people, though, IMO.

New here and I don't know what the general feel of the place is regarding the result but I for one am happy with the outcome. A second vote doesn't scare me a. Coz it's not gonna happen and b. Coz the true leave voters were educated enough to know that there was never a promise of a plan, they do not have magic balls to look into so there campaign was based on assumptions as was the remain campaign

The reason why there shouldn't be another vote it plan and simply really - coz the public spoke and the result is the result which Is democracy. People who didn't vote or voted without having open eyes can only blame themselves imo

GreenishMe · 01/07/2016 19:59

Lou if you're new here and you voted Leave I should probably warn you - it's not going to be pleasant. Smile

Louw1988 · 01/07/2016 20:02

Are we not all adults entitled to an opinion then? 🤔 X

Asprilla11 · 01/07/2016 20:04

EmpressofBlandings

And I accept your right to disagree Smile. Both sides can find independent people to prove or disprove their figures, in the end you make a decision on the facts that you believe have the most truth to them.

What I can't agree on is that the Leave camp were somehow 'worse' liars than Remain. A lie is a lie, they will affect the public in different ways so really neither side can say which lie is worse than the other.

Like I said if you go back to previous General Elections, there were many promises and pledges that have been proven to be lies, from all parties, yet we are happy to only pick on the Leave campaign now?

Thefuturecouldbebright · 01/07/2016 20:07

I rest my violin case... 🙄🙄

Louw1988 · 01/07/2016 20:07

Oh ok lol I thought this was MUMSnet and therefore mature mums? 😬

Thefuturecouldbebright · 01/07/2016 20:08

Hahahahahahaha @Lou

Parker231 · 01/07/2016 20:11

Both sides think they were right, both sides stretched the true, both sides didn't have plans, everyone voted - there was a winner and a loser. That is how the system works and now we move on with the decision of the voters.

Alisvolatpropiis · 01/07/2016 20:12

I don't really care how you voted future, the woe is us nobody wants to be my friend trope is tiresome however.

user1467101855 · 01/07/2016 20:13

Every leave voter I knew used independent fact checking websites. We did not believe the poster on the bus

Lol, the idea that everyone used independent fact checking sites! AS fucking IF!

Thefuturecouldbebright · 01/07/2016 20:13

Yeah, of course you dont care how I voted.... 😂😂

charlottec81 · 01/07/2016 20:14

I voted leave, and wouldn't be scared of another referendum. However I don't think it's ok if another gets called. When will it end? Best of 3, best of 5?

There's no need for another, this one was stressful enough. X

Louw1988 · 01/07/2016 20:15

I did, I didn't take into account any compaigners assumptions and used my own brain for what I thought (and still do) was for the best ...

Louw1988 · 01/07/2016 20:16

I agree, it's just pathetic to call other one. Sore losers just making a mockery of the U.K.

user1467101855 · 01/07/2016 20:16

I guess you can just ignore those of us for who this isn't the case? Since you want the immigrants out anyway, its no skin off your nose how many of them suffer now, is it?
Just get on with your lives, and the people who can't...fuck em. Nice attitude you got there.

Asprilla11 · 01/07/2016 20:17

I said everyone I knew that voted leave, not everyone, do try and read things properly.

Why is it so funny, is it because you Remainers are so superior and of super human intelligence? Grin

Redactio · 01/07/2016 20:17

OP
We've had the vote. we won. Get over it.
The idea that referenda should be re-held until the right result comes in is offensive and anti-democratic.

Alisvolatpropiis · 01/07/2016 20:17

Mind reading leper hmmm? You could make some money with that.

I don't care how you voted as an inidividu because you're nobody to me.

How the electorate voted on the other hand, does.

Hope that clears things up.

TinySalmon · 01/07/2016 20:18

tiggytape that is the most coherent answer I've heard for denying a second referendum :) I never bought of it that way when you start taking in to account voter turnout.

Also, I think people don't appreciate you cannot just call a referendum whenever you like - there are legal, structural, and constitutional points that need to be addressed.

To call a second referendum is a slap in the face of democracy.

I voted Leave and wow look the sky hasn't fallen in, the FTSE has regained all of its losses and then some WITHIN A WEEK, and my company has started encouraging talks with the international community about potential future trade deals (very exciting!).

Oh and for reference, before anyone calls me a racist or xenophobe for voting to leave, I'm an Eastern European immigrant.

GetAHaircutCarl · 01/07/2016 20:19

But it was always the Leave campaign's plan to have a second referendum if they lost.

Would posters here not have voted twice in those circumstances Confused.
