Boris outmaneovered. Et tu Gove & Corbyn? The Westministenders Hunger Games Continues

RedToothBrush · 01/07/2016 12:08

Following the Machiavellian Govian shambles? Utterly gobsmacked at the Labour clusterfuck?

Who will strike next?

Who will the shadowy hand of Osborne back?
Can Gove be launched back into space and back to the planet he came from?
Can May save the country from almost certain doom?
Will Leadsom patronise us all to death (whilst silently stabbing people in the back with a sweet smile)?
Can Johnson make a decision he can stick to, and can we persuade him to give up being a politician?
Will Steven Crabb get rid of that god awful beard?

Will Corbyn shoot himself in the other foot?
Will Angela Eagle get a spine and just stand?
Who the fuck is Owen Smith?
Will the Blairites be foiled and damned?
Are momentum a bunch of thugs or a force for a better, for the people?

Will Farage disappear back under his rock?
Will people wake up to Arron Banks?
What will Dominic Cummings destroy next?

Have we seen a coup d'état?
How do we improve democracy and representation?

All these questions and more.
Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

Reluctant Welcome comrade!

RedToothBrush · 01/07/2016 20:37

I am finding the McKenna connection VERY alarming. (I'm a media grad)

On the day of the election, the BBC or guardian linked to a leave.eu advert on their stream. At the time I was quite shocked by it. It left me wondering a bit about the brainwashing thing, because I'd mentioned it the previous week on due to the way in which people were behaving, both on MN and on social media, in arguing things but not being able to answer the question at all about The Plan.

I've found the video on youtube.

Now in hindsight knowing that McKenna was involved in the advertising, I am even more disturbed by it.

Link to it here. (Don't worry, if it is suggestive, its trigger point has point as its supposed to make you vote a certain way, plus knowing its purpose should make you question anything else sinister in it. I've watched a few times and my head has not exploded)

Remember this was the LAST video by Leave.eu and it was released ON THE DAY OF THE ELECTION.

What's bothering me a little bit here, is if in theory, people were indeed brainwashed in someway, then I THINK you might expect them to experience regret and say things like they didn't know what they were voting for. I'm not an expert in this by any means so I might be talking out my arse on this point, but I'm somewhat troubled.

Arron Banks, seems to be almost boasting about this too. I'm sure there is some psychology on this too.

I think I'm going to pursue a bit more and see what I can find.

I'm also thinking about the dodgy PMs I've had this week too going on about NLP. Sorry to go a bit conspiracy theorist on all this, but yeah. Paul McKenna. Paul Bloody McKenna. Get me a tin foil hat. Sorry. Weirded out

Reluctant, that's brill.

Political engagement is what this country needs to hold these clowns to account.

I don't care who you join (including Conservatives, though I might have a bit of an issue if you join UKIP!).

If the leave videos used dodgy hypnose without viewers being aware then that might be illegal.

Or am I being naive and this is a widely used advertising technique?

MitzyLeFrouf · 01/07/2016 20:46

I knew Paul McKenna was a wrong 'un. Ever since he revealed that he made an excel spreadsheet to find out what it was he wanted in a romantic partner. The excel spreadsheet told him he was in love with his P.A apparently.

He's Simon Cowell's bff so I'll be keeping a close eye on him too.

GingerIvy · 01/07/2016 20:48

Many people likely didn't see the video. In fact, I'll wager quite a lot didn't.

Many people are not susceptible to that kind of thing.

Many people may have seen the video but after they voted.

I would say that it's influence would have been decidedly miniscule.

Wordsaremything · 01/07/2016 20:52

Well it does seen Gideon has at least listened to Carney and former bank governor mervyn King. No emergency budget. Yet .

RedToothBrush · 01/07/2016 20:54

Leave.eu also have
'You can't trust Cameron and Osborne on Turkey'
and
'It is the 24th June and we are at war with the EU. Really?'
on YouTube if you want to search and watch.

I don't think its necessarily an issue for what's gone, even if its dodgy as fuck.

Its more that if this is the way that politics is going then more NEEDS to be made about it, especially if a lot of stuff is being done via social media where the original source of something can often start being lost.

Its one for the future to seriously consider.

Agreed red . The major fault of the Internet is that it can fail to provide a context.context is everything.

howabout · 01/07/2016 21:08

Words the problem with your critique of the interweb is the underlying assumption that the TV and print media do anything other than distort context. See Shami's comments earlier today. I think original interview, only sources I trust, on R4.

Paul McKenna also gives me the creeps.

Wordsaremything · 01/07/2016 21:10

Entirely agree, how.

rookiemere · 01/07/2016 21:13

If Paul McKenna's hypnotic magic worked, I'd be a lot thinner than I am now Angry. So I don't think we need to worry too much about his undue influence on the voters.

SugarPlumTree · 01/07/2016 21:22

The video is primacy recency affect - items seen first and last have more effect than those in the middle so what was seen on the last day was vital for success.

The tone of voice ws deliberate and asumably has been researched as one peiple respond to (which probaboy explains Boris's Churchillian attempt) and style of delivery was a series of points summarising all the key emotional aspects they had researched and found people responding to. All the negative claims made by the opposition were countered with rousing positive emotion.

That's the best I can do after a long week!

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 01/07/2016 21:28

All those trains, rockets, rivers, people leaving nearly made me get off the sofa tonight.

RedToothBrush · 01/07/2016 21:28

Thanks sugar.

Its been A LONG time since I studied this, and I'm rusty to say the least.

I was worried by just how negative the Remain campaign was (negative political campaigning has been studied and generally looses elections) and just HOW much propaganda Leave were putting out there. Remain DID use propaganda but the scale and quantity was completely dwarfed by the amount leave used.

Its a fascinating subject. If I had the chance I would go back and have words with my 18year old self who really didn't pay enough attention to what I was studying. Idiot.

HemanOrSheRa · 01/07/2016 21:31

I find that video very sinister Red. My first thought was - lots of phallic imagery Confused. I think it was created to whip up discontent and therefore support from young, white, british males who feel they have been disenfranchised. Scary stuff.

And I agree, if this is the way politics is going, people need to be made aware of this sort of thing.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 01/07/2016 21:42

I will NEVER keep uuuuuup

I'm on to one placemark per thread, then VROOOOOMMM

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 01/07/2016 21:45

I thought that ad was really banal/basic fwiw

I'm pretty banal but it wouldn't have given me pause

the thing that jumped out at me most*- and I had to watch again to check- NO BME people at all

my kids would have noticed that, too

  • apart from that Corbyn was a bit hawt

I told you I was banal Grin

RedToothBrush · 01/07/2016 21:48

I think this is definitely something that maybe the BBC or C4 should do at least a programme on, to get people thinking about the idea of it all. Opening just a few eyes up to this, makes a difference. Start getting it into the public consciousness bit by bit.

StillSmallVoiceOfQualms · 01/07/2016 21:56

Just watched Wales go through to the semi-finals of the Euros...

If you'd been in a coma for the last week and just woken up, you wouldn't believe a word of what people would be telling you...

HemanOrSheRa · 01/07/2016 21:58

I thought that ad was really banal/basic fwiw That's good Muddha Grin. It wasn't aimed at you. It was aimed at a particular section of society with the purpose of making them go GGRRRRRRRR! YEAH! And that coupled with Aaron Banks saying 'facts don't work' is a heady and sinister mix.

BestIsWest · 01/07/2016 21:59

Too true still. I am literally agog with it all. It's like a parallel universe.

noblegiraffe · 01/07/2016 22:04

The music from that video is fairly standard for self-hypnosis tracks where they want you to wake out of the trance feeling positive and happy about stuff.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 01/07/2016 22:07

it just looks like a load of propaganda tropes shoved together to me

I thought Brits were a bit more cynical than that

would it have convinced many waverers? Or just reinforced the view of people who'd already decided Leave, I wonder

TheBathroomSink · 01/07/2016 22:08

I was considering earlier whether in fact the last week or so have been some sort of fever dream nightmare that's all taking place inside George Osborne's head. Then I decided I should probably just have another margarita.
