Fucking Farage. That's who is representing the leave vote to the EU.

It's embarrassing, even the official Leave campaign didn't want him and yet it's him in there, now being watched by people across Europe as he behaves like a complete dick.

They definitely won't want us now.

Oh, and those who thought the EU was undemocratic may be surprised to see all these countries standing up and having their say.

Chalalala · 28/06/2016 11:32

the problem for the UK is that France really can't afford to play too nice during the presidential campaign, or Le Pen will capitalize on it and go on a rampage...

I get why Leave ideally wanted to wait until the French and German results, as it would allow for less posturing and more rational action. But I really don't think the UK can wait that long now

annandale · 28/06/2016 11:34

Farage was voted in democratically on a tiny turnout for years so that he had a platform and funding for exactly this.

I will never, never understand people who don't vote.

RedToothBrush · 28/06/2016 11:35

BBC say they think there may be as many as SEVEN individuals for the tory leadership.

Hmm

7?? Won't the more they have almost guarantee Boris wins?

noblegiraffe · 28/06/2016 11:39

Farage was voted in democratically on a tiny turnout for years so that he had a platform and funding for exactly this.

Oh yes, it was so funny when he was voted in as an MEP when he hates Europe LOL. He's the MEP equivalent of Boaty McBoatface, and now it's come back to bite us.

noblegiraffe · 28/06/2016 11:40

The MPs will vote the 7 down to 2 who will then be put to party members.

GingerIvy · 28/06/2016 11:41

Sorry, I was unclear. I know they whittle it down, but surely a big split will give him a better chance of being in the top 2. Or are they all really against him?

PlatoTheGreat · 28/06/2016 11:42

Red thank you. That was probably the most unbiased account of this morning we will find anywhere :)

GingerIvy · 28/06/2016 11:42

I vaguely recall reading about their voting process, but can't remember if it's in a lot of stages, or just chopping out and then between 2. Trying to focus on too many things at once, i think.

Oh dear. There do not appear to be plenty more fish in the sea:

Fish have probably voted Leave and buggered up somewhere nice and safe.

annandale · 28/06/2016 11:47

Yes lots of candidates equals a possible Trump situation Confused but in the recent past it's been a first round and then most challengers fall on their swords and try to endorse the winner.

Can't remember if it is still MPs only though. I'd imagine following Corbyns election it will be a cold day in hell now before they change to one member one vote, unless they did it beforehand.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/06/2016 11:48

How do they vote so quickly?!

PlatoTheGreat · 28/06/2016 11:48

I will be very honest. I'm actually wondering if this is not exactely where DC wanted us to be.
He has spent his time saying he wants to be part of the EU but slagging the EU at every single opportunity. His actions never matched his words.

On the other side, he implemented last year the Permanent residence card for EEA nationals (why a permanent resident card for people who should automatically be considered as 'resident'??). He has implemented rules about what sort of benefits EEA nationals can receive (less than British people, even if they have worked here all their life and paid taxes like everyone else).

All the talks about immigration match very precisely his talks about 'benefits scroungers' and his attacks on disabled people. (Not hard to see how this would become 'immigrants are scroungers' - much easier to point fingers towards 'others' rather than yourself)

Maybe I'm very cynical but I'm starting to wonder if he hasn't paved the way to where we are now. And did it deliberately.

GingerIvy · 28/06/2016 11:50

Respect for Khan for this:
"Jeremy won an election last year with a big mandate. He has a big job to do - so do I."

That was the response from London Mayor Sadiq Khan when he was asked earlier for his view on the Labour leadership.

He said he had spent "every spare moment" in recent days focusing on the referendum result, adding: "I haven't had time, I'm afraid, to get involved in internal Labour Party politics."

TheBathroomSink · 28/06/2016 11:50

If there's more than 2 candidates, the MPs vote until there's only two left. Each ballot knocks out the one with the fewest votes. Then the final two go to the party members, in a postal ballot.

GingerIvy · 28/06/2016 11:51

Plato I wondered awhile ago if it wasn't a double bluff. It gives a conservative government more power to make change, does it not? It was one of my concerns.

TheBathroomSink · 28/06/2016 11:54

How do they vote so quickly?!

Years of practice, I think.

Afaik, these rules were brought in by Hague, it used to be just the Parliamentary party which chose the leader.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/06/2016 11:56

Plato

I considered that briefly too, when it was announced in the manifesto that there would be an election. I dismissed it out of hand as surely nobody could be that cynical but with each passing day I am less sure about that.

Dad54 · 28/06/2016 11:59

I think the most telling statement from teh European Parliament this morning was from (I think( the Belgian Green party chap, who was TOTALLY against Brexit/Farage etc, but who said one of the 4 things the EU HAD to do was get a strong border and coastguard to sort out the EUs migration problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Talk about pot and kettle..they think exactly the same as Farage, but just for a slightly different geogrpahical area!!
Seeing this Parliament in action for the first time did NOT make me feel sad we are leaving!!

DoinItFine · 28/06/2016 11:59

The longer the UK waits to push that A50 button, the more restless people will be.

I think the opposite is true.

The longer the gap between the referendum and any decisive moves out of the EU, the better for UK stability.

That's why all the Tories are stalling.

The only control we have left is the timing of our departure (unless we decide not to leave).

It would be extremely foolhardy to rush invoking article 50.

We are in enough shit as it is.

GingerIvy · 28/06/2016 12:00

I don't think the EU Parliament made a great showing - I mentioned fairly early on while watching that I didn't think it was going to go over well in the UK.

RedToothBrush · 28/06/2016 12:01

Possible Tory Leaders:
Jeremy Hunt (hunt the cunt - leaver)
Liam Fox (second attempt at the leadership. has been key player calling for party unity - leaver)
Boris Johnson (megalomanic with a Churchill fixation - leaver)
Theresa May (Big Brother is watching you. Or deporting you - remainer)
Steven Crabb (homophobic evangelical Christian - remainer)
Andrea Leadsom (your mum - leaver)
Dominic Raab (apparently social media friendly - leaver)
Sajid Javid (he of Tata Steel crisis fame - remainer)
Nicky Morgan (going for the second woman in the hat ticket - remainer)
Michael Gove (doesn't like experts - leaver)

Ruled themselves out so far:
George Osbourne

DoinItFine · 28/06/2016 12:02

they think exactly the same as Farage, but just for a slightly different geogrpahical area!!

Um, no they don't.

They are concerned about illegal migration into the EU.

Farage pretends to be concerned about legal migration within the EU.

Very different things.
