Meanwhile, Hunt still won't shut up.

Jeremy Hunt: British Health Minister Calls for 2nd Referendum for Public to Vote on Terms of Brexit
Hunt said the prime minister should negotiate the details of the U.K.'s departure from the EU, which the public should approve. He also told "Good Morning Britain" he may run to lead the Tory Party.

RedToothBrush · 28/06/2016 11:05

Well, I thought it was an interesting watch....

I learnt more about how we are viewed and how farage is even more of a dick than I thought.

If that is even possible.

They are quick at this voting stuff

But, but, but .... aren't they so ^undemocratic" ????

RedToothBrush · 28/06/2016 11:07

Hunt, doing popularist move for a power grab?

Surely not!

Someone tell me why Hunt is now calling for another referendum? It just creates more turmoil? Prat.

Geoffrey Robertson: British Lawyer Says Fight Against Brexit 'Is Not Over Yet'
Members of Parliament "are entitled to vote against it, and are bound to vote against it, if they think it's in Britain's best interest," the activist wrote in The Guardian.

RedToothBrush · 28/06/2016 11:08

I bet Norway are chuffed by Brexit... Hmm

Chalala I agree in principle but it's a great example of why that kind of thing goes together with EU in the complex modern world. Because which country's privacy laws should that organisation follow? Whats their jurisdiction for arrest in each country? Who pays for it?
The kind of EU bureaucracy we all want to complain about (and which is covered by our payment into it) considers complex trade and inter country co-operation like these kind of things.
It amazes me Farage was referring to the "free money" we'll have when not in Eu as though we no longer need to set up equivalent organisation/processes/co-ordination/law making at all Hmm

GoudyStout · 28/06/2016 11:10

Think Hunt is looking for a referendum but on the exit deal agreed - ie, Norway style or go it alone.

Ginger I linked to that previously - it's to do with the European Communities Act 1972.

Tim Farron on BBC News in Brussels....

A very interesting watch, yes. In fairness (to whoever asked), the SNP guy was very fair about reminding them that many people all over the UK did NOT vote for this.

Chalalala · 28/06/2016 11:11

The debate was pretty unsurprising -

Germany motivating everyone to keep their eyes on EU ideals of peace and solidarity

Continental socialists saying the EU has to stop with austerity and deflationist policies to win back popular love

French far-right jumping on the opportunistic anti-austerity train

Poland sucking up the UK because they're scared what will happen to their nationals

Farage talking to British opinion rather than to the rest of Europe

MrsLupo · 28/06/2016 11:13

I bet Norway are chuffed by Brexit...

Norwegian columnist this morning was throwing up his hands at UK's stupidity, saying that Norway's position was a source of national regret.

RedToothBrush · 28/06/2016 11:13

He is there, meeting the leaders of other liberal parties to build some bridges and to smooth over some of our differences.

Doesn't want a50 triggered soon. (no surprise there)

There to argue for the best for British people regardless of how they voted.

Think Hunt is looking for a referendum but on the exit deal agreed

The man is unhinged. What are 48% of the people who never wanted a deal in the first place supposed to do ?

Before we can do anything in UK politics, we need to find out how we can keep 100% of the people as equally (un)happy as possible. Leave/Remain are diametrically opposed positions.

GingerIvy · 28/06/2016 11:14

Chalala In other words, it was likely a huge waste of time, as nothing will ever change.

borntobequiet · 28/06/2016 11:16

Interesting thread in every respect.

But where is Boris?

TUC unhappy at 'snub' from Sajid Javid
Posted at
11:12
Business Secretary Sajid Javid is holding a meeting with businesses today to discuss the impact of the Leave vote. But unions are angry that they weren't invited.

The TUC said it wrote to Mr Javid asking to be involved, but was told its attendance was "unwarranted".

General secretary Frances O'Grady said: "It is disappointing that the representatives of working people are not part of these talks... Excluding the TUC and our member unions from this meeting is not acting in the national interest."

Chalalala · 28/06/2016 11:18

What was a waste of time GingerIvy, today's debate?

I don't think it was ever going to be today that big decisions would be taken. Today was for taking stock of what happened.

Things will change in the EU, that's for sure.

GingerIvy · 28/06/2016 11:19

I'm not so sure. I think they'll deal with the UK situation, then it will slowly settle back into business as usual.

ObiWanCannelloni · 28/06/2016 11:23

borntobequiet
I think he knows that if he keeps his head down, media will frenzy over Labour thereby distracting everyone from Tory and power vacuum issues... Murdoch press like Sky are playing Farage triumphant "Great Britain freely trading with the world!" sound bites on a loop ..
Johnson will fully emerge wearing a crown and ermine in nine weeks and tell people how brilliantly it's all going In a joke filled PMQT with Tories all wetting themselves with laughter about what a card he is...

DoinItFine · 28/06/2016 11:23

Flowers Red

That was great work. Thanks :)

Nothing too surprising, but still important to see how MEPs are lining up.

GingerIvy · 28/06/2016 11:27

MEPs pass their motion calling for UK to begin formal negotiation talks by activating Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty "as soon as possible".

In backing an amendment from the Green/EFA group, they override a draft version of the motion which had called for Article 50 to be triggered "immediately".

However MEPs reject an amendment supported by the Liberal ALDE and Socialist and Democrat groups calling for any replacement UK commissioner not to be given a policy brief.

They also massively reject, by 480 votes to 108, an amendment tabled by the anti-EU ENF group calling on Jean-Claude Juncker to resign as Commission President in the wake of the referendum.

Chalalala · 28/06/2016 11:27

But "business as usual" has never been static, the EU is a project in motion.

France and Germany both want to move forward, but in different ways, and they're both in pre-election mode too which can be paralysing. I think things will become a lot clearer after the elections in 2017.

GingerIvy · 28/06/2016 11:29

True. I think there's going to be a lot of things in limbo for awhile. Concerned it may cause some unrest here in the UK. The longer the UK waits to push that A50 button, the more restless people will be.
