To not be able to speak to my near neighbours who voted leave?

TooMuchCoffeeMakesMeZoom · 24/06/2016 23:43

My children's future has been put at stake. Our economy risks ruin. Our relatively -well-off neighbours in a place with nearly full employment and very low recent immigration (local care companies and NHS are desperate for staff) have voted leave. They are only around fifty.

I'm gobsmacked.

The irony is that the small business they are in is affected by the growth of China as an economic powerhouse. So why on earth do they feel that leaving the EU gives them more power? It gives them less.

I am so angry and feel so let down by my country. These people, and people like them ahem destroyed my hopes for a continued peace in Europe.

How on earth am I expected to talk to them on an equal footing, knowing what they have done through their own greed?

Well your response right there is a tad on the hysterical side, Emily: 'hatred being legitimised.' I'm afraid that's rubbish and sounds a bit silly.

I advise OP to get help because if she is going to go through life struck dumb in the presence of people who disagree with her, she is going to have a very uncomfortable life. There is nothing daring about that!

She could of course always follow the example of Simeon Stylite and find a pillar to sit on.

EttaJ · 27/06/2016 02:50

Louisa you're too funny. Emily ,of course I'm taking YOUR post with the humour you intended because you surely cannot say that with a serious face. How do people as hysterical and dramatic as you get on in life?

PizzaFlavouredCupcake · 27/06/2016 06:36

I am a strong remain person but YANBU yes I am furious about brexit and yes I am pissed off with people who voted leave, but our country is already enough screwed without everyone hating each other. Try to calm down

Basicbrown · 27/06/2016 06:53

Louisa. There is nothing hysterical about not wanting a far right government and hatred being legitimised. How dare you to tell the op to 'get help.'

Interestingly it is a big opportunity for labour to win power on the back of solving some of the problems that have led to such dissatisfaction. They need to stop having late night rows and come up with a plan.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 27/06/2016 08:07

"I voted to stop TTIP"

Oh. My. God.

You just handed power to the right wing of the Conservative party, AND put them in a terrible negotiating position.

These guys don't give a shit about food safety, privatising the NHS etc, and wouldn't have the negotiating power to block them even if they wanted to.

I guarantee the next deal we sign with the USA will be way, way worse than TTIP.

Did you really not think that through at all? Well played.

cabbage67 · 27/06/2016 08:40

HAVE you had too much coffee OP ???

Sassyzen · 27/06/2016 09:12

I don't think you're being unreasonable, I wouldn't speak to them either... although, you might need neighbours on other issues in the neighbourhood... perhaps wait and simmer down a bit first? ...but I completely understand where you're coming from.

I'm heartbroken that our little ones won't have the freedom and advantages to work and travel around the EU as freely as we could... because of the selfish.

Cleo1303 · 27/06/2016 10:04

Selfish? Oh please.

Cleo1303 · 27/06/2016 10:06

And of course they will be able to travel around Europe and thousands of British people will be working in Europe for years to come.

NotAKeyboardWarrior · 27/06/2016 10:10

It seems the only ones who aren't taking this at all seriously are the ones who made it happen. Bit scary?

MangoMoon · 27/06/2016 10:16

I'm heartbroken that our little ones won't have the freedom and advantages to work and travel around the EU as freely as we could... because of the selfish.
Confused

Let me fix that for you....

I'm heartbroken that the 'have-nots' in this country of all ages don't have the freedom and advantages to work and travel as freely as the 'haves'... because of the selfish.

MissSeventies · 27/06/2016 10:16

OP I hope you are feeling better. The UK is now split down the middle with leavers gloating at their success in spite of the massive fallout and remainers feeling that thier EU citizenship has been taken from them against their will. Famies have split over this. It is not like a general election where there is hope of change next time, this is forever and far reaching. I come from a part of the country where politics is bitterly contested buy I have never felt the anger at 'the other side' that I do now. I believed in the UK but personally I am finished with it and will now actively campaign to break it up.

Hang on Missseventies. If Westminster politicians (whoever they end up being) negotiate well with Nicola sturgeon they may prevent us from breaking up and stop Brexit. Just take a few breaths please.

rap12 · 27/06/2016 10:51

Not just TTIP. Just hate the EU. And no, i am not a tory, never have been never will be, but there will be a election in approx. 3 years, if not sooner. This country need people to protest more. We all moan and complain, but lets do as the French, spanish, greeks and south americans do and get onto the streets and really make some noise if here is something we dont agree with when it comes to the government making decisions, ignore the fact that in this country we have to apply and have protests approved (real freedom amd democracy in action there Hmm).
we are 5th largest economy, even if we lose some money we will still be a VERY wealthy country, the money just needs to be spent correctly. Instead of invading countries and paying for nuclear weapons, lets put that money into education (which is pretty awful here) , nhs, carers, transport, lets support gree n energy - properly (dont even get me started on that).
Take a step back, look at the big picture, a world picture. We are better out, we can rule ourselves and trade with developing countries to get raw materials quicker, cheaper and help those economies too.

40 years of EU, lets see what it will be like without it - i'm excited!

rap12 · 27/06/2016 10:55

Sassyzen, i have travelled and worked all over the place over many years (individually, not sent by work) Some places i needed a visa, others not.we will not need a visa for the EU, they need our tourism. If the only reason you voted in was because of that then you are very naive

PoisonousSmurf · 27/06/2016 11:01

Well said rap12! I myself voted out. The remainers are in truth acting like snobs! They need to grow up and see what the EU has become.
We have rattled their cage and they know that they need to listen to ALL the people of the UK, not just the well off (which most of Mumsnet seems to be made up of).
We all need to accept what's happened and MOVE ON!

BeingHuman · 27/06/2016 11:04

I too feel the same way, about a guy who pushed in front of me on the bus this morning. I couldn't speak to him again after that.

xmasadsboohiss · 27/06/2016 11:07

I'm having this very dilemma over my in laws! I share all your concerns and I'm from the EU so I'm struggling badly!

MissSeventies · 27/06/2016 11:10

Janecc that would be a ray of light indeed. Of course people can vote how they like but a decision of this magnitude should never have been put to the public vote. An awful lot of people voting did not even know what the EU was. Oh and I am not well off, my parents came from solid working class backgrounds and worked for everything they gave us as children.

My region did not vote to leave and personally it is not just as simple as suck it up and move on. No offennce to an awful lot of English people, but I am done with England determining my direction of travel.

Savemefromwine · 27/06/2016 11:11

My sister is a drama queen like this. Drives us all mad as she turns every situation into a drama with her as the poor heroine at the centre.

Your neighbours probably don't give a stuff about you op and wouldn't even notice if you ignored them.

Maybe you should send off for a box of grips and take one.
