To not be able to speak to my near neighbours who voted leave?

TooMuchCoffeeMakesMeZoom · 24/06/2016 23:43

My children's future has been put at stake. Our economy risks ruin. Our relatively -well-off neighbours in a place with nearly full employment and very low recent immigration (local care companies and NHS are desperate for staff) have voted leave. They are only around fifty.

I'm gobsmacked.

The irony is that the small business they are in is affected by the growth of China as an economic powerhouse. So why on earth do they feel that leaving the EU gives them more power? It gives them less.

I am so angry and feel so let down by my country. These people, and people like them ahem destroyed my hopes for a continued peace in Europe.

How on earth am I expected to talk to them on an equal footing, knowing what they have done through their own greed?

Yup - grieving. I said you wouldn't understand.

ExitPursuedByBear · 26/06/2016 21:15

Crisis? What Crisis?

user1466971331 · 26/06/2016 21:21

I'm a polish immigrant with a German mother and Jamaican father and I voted to stay in.but I've been watching the news and I'm glad we're out!!!

Insabbathstheatre · 26/06/2016 21:25

YANBU

LeggyLinda · 26/06/2016 21:31

YANBU IMO, but then I might be too.

CasanovaFrankenstein · 26/06/2016 21:44

Wow, how rude some of these comments are. Yes it is a form of grief for people who really cared about it. "Get over it" type comments downgrade something's importance. If it had been Remain, do you seriously think there would be similar threads?

PresidentOliviaMumsnet · 26/06/2016 21:50

Peace and love people
Remain calm, leave your personal attacks out please.

falange · 26/06/2016 21:52

Oh shut up

monstiebags · 26/06/2016 21:52

most people in this country voted leave.
It's called democracy - I know that the erosion of our democracy over the last 40 years thanks to faceless non elected eurocrats has made us less aware of how a democracy works but the fact is that most people want out - most people want to be in charge of their own destinies.

falange · 26/06/2016 21:52

Not you oliviamumsnet. The OP.

WeekendAway · 26/06/2016 21:54

MangoMoon · 26/06/2016 22:10

Falange Grin

What an unfortunate cross post!!

joochiat · 26/06/2016 22:17

I voted leave whilst dh voted remain and it may affect us financially. I felt it was a price worth paying for directly appointed electable politicians, freedom to make our own trade arrangements and ability to select our workforce. I respected dh opinion but he was furious with me branding all leavers as xenophobic ill informed trash! It felt v unfair, but we're working on finding some common ground!!
Yes it is a shock for now but change brings up new opportunities. EU is not meeting failing the needs of many of its citizens and too cumbersome and arrogant to change. Something better can emerge from this for us and Europe if we pull together.

falange · 26/06/2016 22:22

Note to self - always type OP in post when telling OP to shut up. Grin

joochiat · 26/06/2016 22:26

Op for every person on either side who voted flippantly there are ppl on other side who did likewise. I heard remainers who were just thinking about the ease of their next holiday as well as leavers who banged on about just wanting a change. Equally on either side were ppl like my dh and me (remain and leave) who spent months considering the pros and cons. You are intolerant to disown ppl because they came to different conclusion.

NotAKeyboardWarrior · 26/06/2016 22:31

Comments like 'get over it' belong in the playground, not on a forum for adults, ffs. There are a lot of reasons to be upset. The Brexit campaign was built on shameless lies. Many now regret their vote (not going on statistics but on real life, I do know people in the real world) because they were conned. Democracy my fucking arse. If you're gonna gloat and tell 48% of the nation to 'get over it' and 'stop being dramatic' when you've just voted for the most dramatic and irreversible course of action available then that's just a little bit too tragic to be funny.

Maybe we really should draw a line down the country and be done with it because I for one am sick of this shit. You all sound like intolerant morons.

Patapouf · 26/06/2016 22:32

I think YANBU.

I'm fucking grieving. I am a very kind and polite person to everyone I meet (even if I think bad things about them because im not actually very nice Grin ) but I am struggling to be anything more than civil to people who have voted leave.

My DH 's status in this country is uncertain and I feel as if my future has been stolen.

yogagirl22 · 26/06/2016 22:38

This is all very interesting and heated. I love all the politicians on mum's net tapping away . If everyone is so passionate to the point of stopping communication get off your arses and join a political party to do some good going forward. The country is divided that is clear and the media must take some credit for that. But there are reasons why Brexit people feel so strongly. Is is rasicm or class division? I personally feel what needs addressing is people's attitudes. If EY was such a success why are half the country feeling such a lack of identity. I feel that when all becomes more settled people who live here will feel more British and that like during war will have people naturally pull together for a common purpose. Funnily enough a lovely Somalia lady come up to me yesterday she is a neighbour with 3 kids she knows I am a teacher and asked where she could better her English and could I pop round to help? Interesting...that people now want to suddenly become more 'English' maybe if we addressed the marginalisation and immigrants really tried to integrate others would really see the benefits of a diverse society.. We have a generation of kids who have no identity and that has caused problems unless they have wealthy parents. I just want us all to count our blessings we could be living in so much more oppression.

NoMudNoLotus · 26/06/2016 22:43

YY yoga girl .

NoMudNoLotus · 26/06/2016 22:49

Pata yes because everybody who voted leave did so in order for people like your partner to be sent back Hmm.

Not.

I voted leave because I did not want the sneaky dealings of the TTIP agreement affecting the health & safety of this country.

baba5 · 26/06/2016 22:55

They voted to leave a union. It was not their vote alone that swayed it...

They did NOT vote to start a war. They did NOT vote to deliberately upset you personally.

I voted in a way I believe will give my children a better future. Now there is arguments for and against whether my choice was tight but lets be honest its years before we'll know who was right and who was wrong. Even then it will be a speculative answer.

Those not happy need to suck it up and move on!

JudyCoolibar · 26/06/2016 23:16

I wish all the people who are so free with demands that others suck it up could explain precisely how that can be achieved by people who are losing their jobs and businesses directly as a result of the Leave decision. And when they've done that, maybe they could also explain it to the people who are being targeted for racist abuse, also as a direct result of what Leavers voted for.

LifeInJeneral · 26/06/2016 23:40

I voted remain, whilst I am nervous about what this means for the future I also know that we can not fully predict it, even the 'experts' have differing opinions. Ultimately it was almost a 50/50 split so literally half.the country (or those that voted) will disagree with you whichever side you are on and you can't go falling out with all of them can you op? I think such a split vote highlights that there are huge issues that need to be addressed, I don't personally think Brexit was the answer but I can see why someone would have chose to vote leave.
