Brexit

The weather is on the side of the people

Chucking it down in the East of England. Storms last night. Senior Remain campaigners phoning in minute by minute weather updates to Brussels. To say there is despair among the elite is to do the English language injustice.

Brexiters were out in force, soaked to the skin, some were being carried to the polling booths. As we said "good morning" to each other, there were mentions of "Independence Day" with laughs and winks.

Some Brexiters looked to the Heavens as they chucked down rain upon us and smiled. The Heavens were on our side.

They have accepted the people's will with very good grace and humility

Which ismore than can be said for mumsnet remainers
Sour grapes by the bucketload

claig · 24/06/2016 11:45

'Which ismore than can be said for mumsnet remainers'

Yes, some of them.

Also we will now have to listen to the BBC showing us the people booing Boris etc as some people don't want to accept the people's will

glass it's been less than 12 hours since the result. Would you please engage your brain and realise that half the UK is genuinely gutted about this. So huge apologies if people aren't jumping up and down congratulating you.

glassgarden · 24/06/2016 12:21

Sorry, I should have more sympathy for the poor remainers, it must be a huge shock when you realise that most of the electorate isn't on your side

squoosh · 24/06/2016 12:26

You're so gracious glass. Well done you.

Lweji · 24/06/2016 12:29

Whether it will be good or bad for Labour or Corbyn remains to be seen.

Elections are still a while away, as is the actual Brexit.

Things may well change until then. Fingers crossed leaving is actually beneficial to the UK (assuming it won't break up either).

glassgarden · 24/06/2016 12:30

Oh don't mention it Squoosh, it was nothing really
I'm sure the remainers will perk up in a day or two

smallfox1980 · 24/06/2016 12:31

"most" of the electorate?

Lets be honest a 4% majority is not "most", its a fairly even split and if we'd had any sense something with less than 10% majority shouldn't have been binding.

squoosh · 24/06/2016 12:32

Try not to be such a goady twat. There's a poppet.

Eigg · 24/06/2016 12:49

Glass it's not sour grapes.

It's real actual distress and fear.

A fluctuating pound damages my family's finances right now.

My family are being impacted by the results of this decision right now. Not in six months, or two years but this morning.

I'm not able to be 'gracious' in defeat while I'm crying - this isn't a sports match - it's my life.

glassgarden · 24/06/2016 13:08

Eu is doomed to unravel
Best we leave now rather than later

Limer · 24/06/2016 13:47

Does anyone remember a poster on here called Daisyonthegreen ? Shortly after the referendum was announced she started a thread which eventually ran to 1000 posts - then she started another. The overriding theme of those threads was Remainers posting links to article after article proving that EU membership brought nothing but wealth and prosperity to the UK. The Leavers kept pointing out that they actually knew people who had in fact had negative experiences as a result of EU membership, but the Remainers just mocked their stupidity and scoffed, because "the plural of anecdote is not data" .

Let's hope those Remainers are enjoying their humble pie.

Lweji · 24/06/2016 14:20

There's an interesting thread about all the people regretting voting Leave.

BlunderWomansCat · 24/06/2016 14:20

Morgan Stanley have started moving 2,000 staff from London to Frankfurt and Dublin. The financial services exodus has began.

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 24/06/2016 14:28

Blunders I also heard that. It will negatively impact the London housing market, and I'm guessing there will be some second homes going on the market in the weeks that follow.

The general public who wanted to get rid of the bankers have got their wish!

But let's not forget this is an historic day and we will pull together to get Britan doing business globally. The first few days after a big shock are always traumatic

CremeBrulee · 24/06/2016 16:14

Just because it's not impacting you right now doesn't mean it's not immediately affecting others. My DNephews job is to deliver European expansion of his company by opening new offices in various key European locations.

He's just moved to Bucharest to open an office there. He's paid in Sterling so his pay packet is worth a lot less this morning. And who knows if these European offices will be required now?

I expect his plans will have to be scaled back. And the offices he is opening would provide jobs for the UK and that is where all the delivery is centred.

BillSykesDog · 24/06/2016 20:00

Well, now he knows how everyone in the construction industry felt after ascension of the new states. Funnily enough I don't remember many tears being shed for them.

CremeBrulee · 24/06/2016 22:52

So your position is based on spite? Against a generation who weren't even born then? Confused

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 24/06/2016 23:07

Well, now he knows how everyone in the construction industry felt after ascension of the new states. Funnily enough I don't remember many tears being shed for them.

Wtaf? And that is relevant how?

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 25/06/2016 08:24

This is a massive opportunity for the UK to open its doors for business!

Let's cut corporation and NI paid by small/mudium sized business. Let's give grants to international manufacturing companies to open factories in the north of England.

We need less negativity and see this change as a huge opportunity. When one door closes another one opens!

The infighting as a nation should be curbed, along with endlessly discussing the divide between remain and leave. Talk of London trying to stay in the EU is unnecessary and unhelpful.

Yes change is scary, and unsettling. And I view the biggest problem as being weak leadership at the top (Governemnt).

The IN campaigners only have themselves to blame for the result. If they wanted to win this referendum, they should have run a hugely positive marketing campaign of all of the benefits there are for staying in the EU.
Endless negative pontification and conjecture about what "could" happen was trying and turned the voters off.

I believe this marks a positive turning point in politics. People actually got out and voted for something they believed in, regardless if they didn't get the result they wanted. The general public are engaged, and invested in their nation, and politicians would do well to sit up and take note.

MangoMoon · 25/06/2016 09:28

SmallLegs, it's relevant because that is just one example of what the working classes have been dealing with since Tony Blair decided that immediate uncapped, uncontrolled immigration from former eastern bloc states was a marvellous idea.

It's relevant because it's one reason swathes of people voted to Leave.

MangoMoon · 25/06/2016 09:31

Absolutely Frank, this is a huge opportunity.
Scrapping and doom mongering is counterproductive.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 25/06/2016 09:37

Arguably the construction industry was taken down by a global recession and a massive downturn in house building.

But hey blame it on migrants why not?

But I very much doubt it was Creme's DNs fault. So why should him get a taste of what construction workers suffered make anything remotely better.
It is not a race to the bottom.

I am sure that he and the other people who work for his company in the UK who may well also lose their jobs now will be greatly chastened to know that really it was all their fault. That'll learn them.Hmm

claig · 25/06/2016 09:38

Great post, Frank.
