Anyone else daring to get a bit excited now

I am starting to allow myself to get excited about a better, fairer future for our country.

Dennis Skinner and John Mann of Labour coming out for Brexit.

And a letter from the JCB Chairman on the BBC website.

The letter he said he was "very confident that we can stand on our own two feet".
He also said that more than 53% of all UK exports go to non-EU nations.
In response, the Remain side said firms including Airbus and BMW, had already written to their staff to put the benefits of staying in the EU.

Lord Bamford told his employees that the referendum's outcome "will determine the future of our country" with a "lasting impact on the lives of our children and grandchildren".

Lovely principled men.

We have our rights in the EU democracy. If people can't be bothered to turn up to vote for their MEPs they're choosing not to exercise them. Yes, there may be a democratic deficit in Brussels, which would be a better focus of reform, but we too have hordes of unelected civil servants drafting policies and carrying on the real business of government.

Limer · 11/06/2016 12:27

The democratically elected UK government Ghost

disappoint15 · 11/06/2016 12:28

Perhaps LightningGirl you could explain to me what the long term benefits for your children and family will be so that I can understand. All I can see for my children is more uncertainty and anxiety.

pieceofpurplesky · 11/06/2016 12:29

I am surprised any woman can support Brexit - after all it's an EU law that means we are entitled to the same pay as men.

I, like biscuit, am very afraid that people are not seeing the bigger picture. Some big companies have transferred £78 million (or billion) in to other currencies as they foresee a £ collapse if we leave. Our borders will be less secure as we will not be working with the rest of Europe. The Leave campaign are
Scaremongers and have been proven to lie.

disappoint15 · 11/06/2016 12:34

We in the UK have 397,000 unelected civil servants for a population of 64 million and the EU have 55,000 civil servants for a population of 508,000. There are 28 members of the EU commission. This compares to 802 members of the House of Lords of whom 92 are hereditary peers and 28 are bishops. Oh, and we have one hereditary head of state.

disappoint15 · 11/06/2016 12:35

Sorry, obviously the EU has 55,000 civil servants for a population of 500 million

Limer · 11/06/2016 12:39

Exactly, disappoint15. We've already got more than enough UK-based bureaucracy. Crazy to have another layer at EU level.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 11/06/2016 12:40

First past the post is democratic? I'd say it pays lip service to democracy.

Limer · 11/06/2016 12:42

The UK voted for FPTP in the AV referendum in 2011.

winkywinkola · 11/06/2016 12:43

Really worried.

All the leave voters asking questions for Andrea Leadsom are asking her to predict the future about tariffs etc.

She doesn't know what trade deals (if any, if favourable) will be made. She can't predict the future and yet they are all so very sure it's the right thing to do.

It's weird. To have so much faith in nothing tangible.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 11/06/2016 12:43

We've already got more than enough UK-based bureaucracy. Crazy to have another layer at EU level.

but you're either opposed to bureaucracy or you aren't?

Funnily we sometimes rely on the HoL to hold up bills that the public dislike and yet parliament endorses.

alltouchedout · 11/06/2016 12:44

No, I'd say I'm becoming more and more frightened. I don't doubt that you and many others genuinely believe it is best that we leave the EU. But I genuinely believe that is best if we stay and I fear for our future if we vote to leave.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 11/06/2016 12:51

The UK voted for FPTP in the AV referendum in 2011.

42% turnout, ill-informed referendum. And you've not addressed my point. I'm wondering whether Brexiters are as bothered about democracy as they claim.

NotDavidTennant · 11/06/2016 12:53

I know the bookies aren't infallible but they are currently pricing a 70% likelihood of remain. If I was a leave supporter I would actually be starting to get worried about now.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 11/06/2016 12:59

I'm fearful, not exited. Almost every right I have as a women is granted to me because we are part of Europe.. Handing even more power to a tory government is dangerous, they have literally killed people.

I am hiding under a rock until it's over and I am hoping people see sense and vote remain.

Brokenbiscuit · 11/06/2016 13:06

I'm not proud of myself for this, but I'm starting to get quite angry as well as scared. It's a democracy, and people have a right to make their choice, but there is so much ignorance on both sides. I've heard people basing their decisions on such spurious, trivial reasons.

I will find it hard not to feel bitter about the result if we vote leave. I'm sure that others will feel bitter if we vote to stay. It cannot end well, either way.

I'm also worried that there may be a massive backlash if we vote leave. I think people will feel cheated when they realise that "independence" isn't necessarily all that the leave campaign are promising. People should be careful what they wish for.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 11/06/2016 13:13

Indeed Broken.

Considering the tories failed to declare their election expenditure and are being investigated by the police I even wonder if they have a legal mandate for this election.

oneofthegiantsisme · 11/06/2016 13:14

What biscuit said. Getting very scared, as well as very cross at all the scaremongering and misinformation put out by the campaigns on both sides.

I seriously fear for the security of all in Europe if we leave. 70 years of peace is nothing compared to a few millennia of almost constant war.

Rosa · 11/06/2016 13:34

I am bricking it.
After being told to go back to my own country - In local country side shop speaking Italian with my bilingual ( British passport holding children -.... I was dumstruck .) If England leaves this is going to get worse as the Ignorant will get worse...
Watching from the outside there is so much bullshit being said from both sides that for those who don't have the time or the will to investigate more they will believe the bullshit being spat out .

AnneElliott · 11/06/2016 14:17

The equal pay act was passed in 1970? So nothing to do with the EU guaranteeing women get paid the same as men!

nonamenopackdrill · 11/06/2016 14:31

I dread the idea of brexit - we will retreat into little England - stuck with the football hooligans and the Queen, and a completely screwed economy. It's a good job the rest of Europe doesn't get to vote on whether to kick us out or not.

I can only hope that common sense prevails over racism.

strawberrybootlace · 11/06/2016 14:32

Not excited but scared. Lots of sleepless nights worrying about what will happen to our family (expats).

dogchewedtoy1 · 11/06/2016 14:35

winky - ask her a question in the web chat. Get her to justify her opinion to you. Get involved. Smile

RosesareSublime · 11/06/2016 14:42

Exactly, disappoint15. We've already got more than enough UK-based bureaucracy. Crazy to have another layer at EU level.

^^ This is how I feel, I do not understand the negative thought process of " we have un elected people here too, so lets add more, we have murderers here too, so lets have more, we have homeless here too, lets have more ...etc we are strangled by red tape, lets gag ourselves further

2ManySweets · 11/06/2016 14:47

Late to the party here but TO ME this article nails it:

blogs.spectator.co.uk/2016/06/brexit-triumph-right/

"However much pleasure we take in exposing the mendacity of the Brexit campaign, we will not be able to conceal the fact that the populist right will have won a tremendous victory" NAILS IT.

"However much pleasure we take in exposing the mendacity of the Brexit campaign, we will not be able to conceal the fact that the populist right will have won a tremendous victory"

The irony that there's been a general acceptance of a growing populist right over here, the type that "that Europe" has had for years and we've been (frankly) not reactionary enough (like those Euro-types) to indulge in such political practices in the past has not escaped me.

To me, xenophobia has had a home here since it's become seemingly acceptable to fear Muslims, anyone that looks like a Muslim, or anyone that might look "a bit Middle Eastern". Its bedfellow is the now acceptable disdain for anyone from the old Eastern Bloc "coming over here taking BRITISH jobs".

My gut tells me that your typical Brexit voter isn't sticking the two fingers to Christine Lagarde but believes Britain is "full up" and casts a vote based on a dislike of immigrants and a desire to stop their entry into Britain ASAP.

For the most part - and I'm speaking about your typical lay voter here, as the majority of us do not leaf through a 16,000 word manifesto before hitting the ballot box - a vote for Brexit is a vote for NIMBYism at best, and out and out xenophobia at worst and this article nails it.

but hey! That's just my tuppenceworth Grin I just think the whole "Leave" argument stinks
