Brexit

Anyone else really worried now?

My work has started quietly drawing up contingency plans for if Brexit happens. Same at DH's work. Could mean lots of jobs moving to Germany and Ireland at both our firms. We're already seeing far fewer people investing or spending money.

I'm bloody terrified. Could lose my job. House could end up in negative equity. And for what?

I don't even think it's "project fear" from the government anymore... News today showed investors are taking money out of the UK faster than anytime since the crash. People with "skin in the game" voting with their money.

I understand that for lots of people the EU referendum isn't about money. however, because of a lot of it leaving, stopping coming in, or just simply being worth less... Well that leaves us screwed for a very long time. Fewer jobs. Less tax money coming in - so less money for the NHS and so on. So even if we 'take back control', of what exactly. what will we be 'in control' of?

I'm really worried about "Leave" happening and me and my family being utterly f*ed in a few months time as a result. Has the country lost its mind?

Anyone else worried about where this leaves us?

The greater good is why I'm voting to out. I'm excited and optimistic about the prospect of Brexit.

I'm scared that the fucking ill-informed idiots will rip up this country's future for the sake of nostalgia of the shite old days I'm neither ill-informed nor an idiot. Typical abuse from the Remainers, nothing changes on here does it? Hmm

Pangburn, how can you call the leave campaign mendacious when the Remainers arguments are based on falsehoods and spin?

OP, I'm 'remain' as well, and yanbu to think about this could affect you personally.

I have no idea how it will affect us (as in, the UK as a whole) on an economic scale - but Brexit would be drastic - a huge change. DH works in London for a US company. We could, on a personal level, at any time, with or without brexit, choose to transfer his job over to the US. Which is a comfort to me if the SHTF - It's a safety net (I think). Confused

Iamnotdarling Have you ever considered that your so called 'fucking ill-informed idiots' might just know what they are talking about, and be very well informed indeed?

You claim to be all for the EU then complain if the EU does well in a Britexit.

I am scred of the angry pitcher forks and the remainers tantrums should we leave.

I thought about it scary, but based on the conversations I've had in real life with people intending to vote out, I immediately disregarded that thought as ridiculous. It patently is not the case for a great many supporting Brexit.

Broadly speaking the better educated intend to vote to remain. This of course is excluded the well educated but extremely wealthy, self interested elite.

Yes. I'm scared. I'm scared that the fucking ill-informed idiots will rip up this country's future for the sake of nostalgia of the shite old days when Britain thought it had a right to rule the world.

Please do keep insulting us. There's been so much of it, I'm convinced it will strengthen the out vote.

LilySnape...... I am all for immigration, as long as it is controlled. As things are, we have no control over the massive amount of unskilled, uneducated economic migrants entering the country, because our borders are open. It is totally out of control...... As I said in my last post, there are many good reasons for voting brexit, and reclaiming the huge amount of wasted money going to Brussels is one of them, as you pointed out. Money that could be better spent on key services. Key services that would be under less strain in ten years because it will not have to contend with an extra three million people. It's a win-win situation..... Vote brexit.

It is really quite impossible for Britain to have closed borders, from a physical perspective. It is an island.

However, in the political sense we do have them, our borders are not open, we are not part of Schengen.

Maybe they are informed and don't like the EU.

I work in financial services. Uncertainty is almost always bad. If people don't know what things will cost in a year, they don't spend today.

Ah. That explains it. There are about three employee groups who are disproportionately represented amongst remain supporters and financial services professionals are one of those groups.

The main uncertainty will be over when the count is complete, whichever way it goes. There'll just be detail left to resolve.

Who are the other two groups?

I'm just watching the Fargae-Cameron debate on ITV. Why does DC always look so different when in 'politics' from when he's 'at home in his kitchen' ? The former: in a suit, almost like a gargoyle. The latter:, relaxed, almost looking like my Dh Shock Confused

I'm still for remain. And I realise this is not the most salient point in the debate...

Cameron is heavily relying on his 're-negotiation' on immigration with EU in his debate.

I'd be interested in what others have to say about that. (Genuinely).

Report
Just5minswithDacre · 08/06/2016 02:39

The same, I think; funding and ease of movement and collaboration (as they see it).

I'm sure schemes and visa pathways etc could be prioritised if we exit, though.

Shiney Dave had his FIL write to the Spectator and tell us Westminster are going to block a leave. I think he flipped us the finger.

Do Brexiters maintain that Cameron's 're-negotiation' on immigration won't work? Isn't practical? I'd be interested to hear. Immigration does concern me slightly, not in I want it stopped, but that I am slightly concerned about the net numbers, and people being able to move so freely. But then, we're not in Schengen, so ???....

Plus the UK farmers - aren't they a fierce 'remain' group? I mean they get the subsidies? And a lot of them suffer now.

Thank yyou howtorebuild, I'll have a proper read of that tomorrow. I'm knackered, and really need to go to bed now. Spectator: awfully right ring? I will read and absorb though.

I don't believe that we (or DC ) have any bargaining power to speak of. It's all bluff, bluster and diplomatic fig-leafery. Look at the recent "deal" he "won".

I'm not worried about migration numbers at all. I do have concern that low pay immigration depresses wages for the lower income deciles.

More importantly, I'm concerned about security. We're not in Schengen, but we abut it and we wave through anyone with an EU passport ATM, which means that anyone who can obtain a Greek or Maltese (for example) can cross the whole of Europe and only our overstretched Border Agency will ever scrutinise that document before they reach UK soil; ONE check between us and various places.

If all non-UK arrivals needed a visa or residence permit (computerised, checkable, efficient, not a huge hassle for applicants) everyone living here would be much safer.
